Hiker Trips On Rocky Trail, Blacks Out, Then Wakes Up Somewhere That Shouldn’t Have Been Safe

Some hiking accidents are frightening because of the injuries they cause. Others stay with you because you cannot understand how you survived them in the first place. One hiker experienced the latter.

A few years ago, he was hiking alone through Gay City State Park in Connecticut while his pregnant wife stayed home. Halfway through a roughly five-mile trail, he reached a steep downhill section covered almost entirely in large rocks. He was accustomed to jumping from stone to stone, but during one step, something went inexplicably wrong.

He remembers suddenly being airborne, seeing the ground move beneath him, and then everything going black. When he regained consciousness, he was lying remarkably unharmed in a tiny gap between the rocks, with only deep welts on his shins. What bothers him most is what happened when he returned days later: he could not find the space where his body had landed.

A hiker survives a mysterious fall between rocks, only to find the spot seemingly impossible to locate afterward

'Strange Accident While Hiking and I Can’t Shake Something Happened'

I was hiking at Gay City State Park in CT during spring a few years ago. My wife was pregnant so I had gone by myself.

I like to take my time and enjoy the outdoors/weather so I was taking the longest outer circle you can, I think it’s about 5 miles total. This is in...

I was about halfway through, and at this point in the trail there’s a downhill section that is all rocks, anywhere from soccer hall to yoga ball sized.

They make up the entire downhill path, so you either have to walk on them or around them.

I like running up hills and down the hills, so I started doing what I always did many times before, hopping from rock to rock down the hill.

I was about halfway down the hill when I can’t explain what happened to me.

I missed a stone or something, but the next second instead of eating s__t, I was floating through the air.

I remember seeing the ground moving under me like I was being carried through the air. Then blackness.

I woke up lying on my arms/stomach, miraculously in a space between all the stones just large enough for my body.

My legs were behind me resting on a stone. My shins had deep welts from where my legs had fallen on the stone behind me.

I remember looking up at the hill and the space where I fell, then called my wife to tell her what had happened and I was okay.

No other part of me was hurt or injured in any way.

I went back a couple days later and the strangest part? I scoured that same hill for the spot where I fell and I could not find it.

There was no space anywhere in the rocks for someone to fall like I did.

I should have slammed my head into a bunch of rocks and either been seriously injured or dead.

I can’t explain what happened and it still shakes me thinking about it now. Wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this?

Some accidents become difficult to forget not because of the injuries they cause, but because of the injuries they somehow fail to cause. When the outcome seems wildly different from what should have happened, the mind keeps returning to the missing pieces, trying to reconstruct a moment that lasted only seconds.

That is what makes this hiking story so unsettling. The narrator remembers running down a steep, rock-covered section, suddenly becoming airborne, and then experiencing a gap in memory before waking between stones with only deep welts on his shins.

He was alone, his wife was pregnant, and the location was remote enough that a serious injury could have become dangerous quickly. The fact that he later returned and could not identify the exact landing spot made the experience even harder to reconcile.

A more grounded perspective does not make the event any less remarkable. Human memory is not a continuous recording, particularly during sudden accidents. The narrator may genuinely remember floating through the air and then darkness, while still lacking crucial information about the fall itself.

The apparent impossibility of the landing may also be partly caused by perspective: after the event, the terrain could look less forgiving than it actually was at the precise angle and trajectory of the fall.

Neuroscientist and memory researcher Elizabeth Loftus has spent decades studying how memories are reconstructed rather than perfectly replayed. Her research demonstrates that people can confidently remember details that were altered, incomplete, or influenced by later information.

Importantly, this does not mean someone is deliberately inventing an experience. Memory can feel vivid and authentic while still containing gaps or distortions, particularly when an event is emotionally intense.

That offers one possible explanation for why the story still feels supernatural to the narrator. During a sudden fall, perception and memory may not capture every movement.

A brief loss of consciousness, disorientation, or adrenaline-driven attention could leave the brain with only fragments: movement, darkness, impact, and awakening. The missing sequence can then become the most compelling part of the memory.

There is also a simple physical possibility. Uneven terrain can produce surprisingly favorable outcomes.

A person’s trajectory, body position, flexible joints, vegetation, small changes in elevation, or the way rocks shift can create a narrow landing space that would be extremely difficult to reproduce or identify afterward. “I should have been seriously injured” is not the same as “serious injury was inevitable.”

That does not diminish the luck involved. The narrator appears to have escaped what could have been a catastrophic fall, and the experience understandably remained emotionally powerful, especially because his wife was pregnant at the time.

Perhaps the most useful interpretation is not that something inexplicable necessarily intervened, but that rare combinations of physics, terrain, body position, and chance occasionally produce astonishing outcomes.

Sometimes surviving an accident can feel more mysterious than the accident itself because the brain knows how badly things *could* have gone, even when it cannot reconstruct exactly why they did not.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters shared their own close-call experiences where they felt an unexplained force physically intervened and prevented a serious accident

ChevronSugarHeart − My father - now deceased from old age - told me this story.

He was swimming under one of those floating decks in a lake when he tried to surface while under the deck.

He swallowed water trying to breathe and started to drown when something picked him up by the back of his neck and put him on the deck. He was alone.

Hairy_Comfort1148 − My mom told me a story one time about how she was driving by herself and started to turn to pull onto a highway.

Something physically yanked the wheel out of her hand and a truck barreled by that she hadn’t seen and was about to pull out in front of.

Spoony1982 − Reminds me of the time i was descending some quarry rocks and tripped forward.

I caught myself but it sort of felt like something caught me and pushed me back upright. I remember immediately thinking it was the spirit of my father that caught...

During this time, i was going through a severe depression and was seeing religious symbols and angels, mainly made up of light and shadows.

These users interpreted the experience as possibly involving a guardian angel or an unseen protective presence

immersemeinnature − Guardian angel 😇

Leading-Fly-4597 − I have a few close calls in my life and there is a known phenomena where when you realize things are going to be bad, our perception of...

Things seem to move in slow motion, but only to the person who is about to "eat it".

It's very cool and seems to buy us time to react?

I'm not saying that is what happened, but it might be a piece of it? Very cool though! Sounds like you might have a friend keeping an eye you! 😉

These commenters suggested more ordinary explanations, including concussion-related memory distortion or physical evidence that might help reconstruct what happened

CastorCurio − Maybe you had a small concussion and your recollection of the events are off?

Due-Froyo-5418 − Any other bruising or scratches on your body like on your shins or skinned knees or arms? I've fallen before and was scratched up on rocks and bruised.

This commenter responded with a humorous joke about OP’s prolonged stay at “Gay park.”

nuggie_vw − This is quite an elaborate story for why you stayed so long at Gay park.

This commenter gave the experience a supernatural, multiverse-style explanation as a joke.

Dizzy_Bug8248 − You died in another spot in the multiverse and switched spots in space and time

This user described several serious accidents and near misses, including an incident where they unexpectedly ended up underneath a four-wheeler without understanding how it happened

Ambitious_Struggle41 − I had a similar experience as a kid. I was with my friend driving her four wheeler up and down the road,

stopped in my front yard for a second and when I started back up something happened.

It felt like floating too, next thing I know I was on the ground on my back, arms spread out, four wheeler on top of me

but not actually touching me. I have no idea how it happened, how I could’ve ended up directly under the four wheeler like that.

We couldn’t have been going more than 5mph, I had barely just hit the gas and it almost immediately happened.

No one else saw it, I never told my family, I didn’t have any concussion symptoms either.

Since then I’ve been in 3 wrecks, one where my fiancé was driving us home from high school, someone came speeding and hit us, felt like it happened in slow...

Second I was driving my moped, someone essentially drove me into a ditch, all I remember is yelling “oh s__t” as I saw the ditch coming then I blacked out,

got a concussion from that one. Last one was my new motorcycle, it was my daily driver and I was on my way to work, had it for maybe 2...

It had been raining but I couldn’t call out of work and had no other way to get there so I drove, tried to stop and my motorcycle decided it...

I could’ve caught it but I would’ve had to go straight, but straight there was a car. I had no choice but to drop it, and thus myself.

Scraped up my a__le pretty bad, gave myself a concussion, drove home, called out of work and spend the day at home crying. Motorcycle was fine other than some paint...

Have you ever experienced time slowing down during an accident or near miss?

And if you returned to the exact spot and could not make sense of how you survived, would the scientific explanation actually make you feel any less unsettled?
