His Neighbor Kept Stealing Gas, So He Left a Very Unpleasant Surprise in the Can

There are few things more irritating than realizing someone has been stealing from you, especially when the thief lives right next door.

For one homeowner, the mystery started with something that seemed almost too ridiculous to be worth investigating. His five-gallon gas can was constantly running low, even though his lawnmower had a tiny fuel tank. He knew he wasn’t using nearly enough gas to explain where it was going.

At first, he was simply suspicious.

Then he decided to find out what was happening.

This was back before inexpensive security cameras made backyard surveillance easy, so he improvised. He set up a webcam connected to his laptop and used motion-detection software to monitor the yard.

He didn’t have to wait long.

The footage showed his neighbor walking into his backyard, taking the gas can, filling his own equipment and car, and then returning the empty container.

The mystery was solved.

Now the homeowner just had to decide what to do about it.

His Neighbor Kept Stealing Gas, So He Left a Very Unpleasant Surprise in the Can

'Gas Thief Revenge?'

I was told this belonged here so I’m reposting.

Had a neighbor that would walk into my backyard, take my gas can of gas for my mower and put it in his car and mower and then return the...

I found this out because I had begun to a little suspicious that this 5 gallon can was always nearly empty every time I went to mow the lawn and...

This was back before cheap easy security cameras so I had to set up a WebCam from my laptop with motion detection software.

Caught the guy going into the backyard literally five minutes after I left the house.

For the next week, every time I had to take a p__s, I pissed in that gas can.

Now full of p__s, but still smells enough like gas to fool an i__ot. Then I left it on the back patio again.

Made a big show of checking the fluids in my car, packing a few bags.

Made sure the neighbor knew I was getting ready to go on a trip and I’d be gone a while. Hoping he takes the bait.

I come back home in about an hour. (Car trouble 😉) The thief is in his front yard pulling the rope on his lawnmower so hard. It looks like he’s...

Turning bright, red and cursing. Later he gets in his car makes it a couple blocks up the road and it suddenly breaks down….. I check the gas can on...

Also, I just wanted to add, this guy was a huge piece of crap that’s not the only thing he did.

I found out he had arrest warrants. So I ended up getting him arrested by applying for a sheriff’s ride along program in his name. 😆

The Gas Can Wasn’t as Innocent as It Looked

Instead of confronting the neighbor, he came up with a plan.

For the next week, whenever nature called, he used the gas can for a very different purpose. Eventually, it contained a rather unpleasant mixture that still carried enough of the gasoline smell to fool someone who wasn’t paying close attention.

Then he put the can right back where it had always been.

On its own, that probably wasn’t enough.

So he added a little theater.

The homeowner made a point of checking the fluids in his car and packing bags. He wanted the neighbor to believe he was leaving town for an extended trip.

Then he left.

Except he didn’t go very far.

About an hour later, he returned home because of what he jokingly described as “car trouble.”

And that’s when the show began.

The Thief Took the Bait

When the homeowner came back, he spotted his neighbor in the front yard.

The man was desperately pulling the starter cord on his lawnmower.

Again.

And again.

He was apparently furious, confused, and getting red in the face as the machine stubbornly refused to cooperate.

The homeowner watched from a distance.

Eventually, the neighbor gave up and got into his car.

He made it only a couple of blocks before that vehicle apparently stopped working too.

At that point, the homeowner checked his gas can.

It was empty.

The thief had taken the bait.

The revenge was complete.

The homeowner later added that this wasn’t the only reason he disliked his neighbor. He claimed he eventually discovered that the man had outstanding arrest warrants.

That led to an even more absurd chapter.

The homeowner applied for a sheriff’s ride-along program using the neighbor’s name.

And, according to the story, the neighbor eventually ended up arrested.

The gas prank was funny.

The ride-along trick was the chef’s kiss.

Why the Revenge Worked So Well

What makes this story satisfying isn’t simply the prank. It’s the patience behind it.

The homeowner didn’t immediately confront the neighbor or start a shouting match. He first figured out exactly what was happening. Once he had evidence, he created a situation where the thief effectively exposed himself.

There’s also an element of poetic justice here.

The neighbor wasn’t stealing something trivial like a garden decoration. He was repeatedly entering someone else’s backyard and taking fuel for his own vehicles and equipment. The homeowner’s response was essentially, “If you’re going to take whatever you find in this can, you might want to know exactly what’s inside it.”

Of course, there is an important safety issue hidden underneath the humor.

Gasoline and gasoline vapors are highly flammable, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that portable fuel containers should be stored in cool, well-ventilated areas away from ignition sources. Fuel containers can pose serious fire and burn hazards if mishandled.

So while the Reddit story makes the prank sound hilarious, deliberately tampering with fuel can create real risks. The safest lesson is to secure gasoline properly and avoid experimenting with fuel or machinery.

The homeowner’s actual victory came from catching the thief and eventually dealing with the larger problem, not from turning gasoline into a revenge device.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Ordinary_Resolve_331 − Love it especially the ride along bit genius.

Imguran − My British friends would say *'taking the p__s'*.

Accomplished-Tax-211 − Well played, my friend. Well played indeed.

OracleofFl − You went easy on him. I would have added some fine abrasive powder.

Wrennly_1020 − I noticed my gas can was gone. I called my daughter and she had taken it, topped it off with gas for her lawn mower.

Just over half chain saw mix. It likely wouldn’t of hurt anything if she’d used it but its a good idea to know what’s in a gas can before use.

CoderJoe1 − This is golden!

things_U_choose_2_b − This reminds me of one my dad's stories from his younger RAF days. He was at a disco (using his terminology here), noticed a guy minesweeping pints.

So he goes to the loo with a half-drunk pint, fills it the rest of the way up with p__s, sets it down and wanders off to watch from across...

Sure enough, the minesweeper picks up the pint, and takes a massive gulp of p__s hahaha.

Hempsox − Kudos for the dedication to actually take, with what sounds like an extraordinary amount of work, a p__s.

At least the gas residue would have masked the smell when opening the can.

Believe_Steve − Oh, that ride-along thing. Chef's kiss!!

NotThatValleyGirl − Don't even care if this is AI, the visual of a gas thief getting p__s-fucked like this made my day.

Final Thoughts

A neighbor stealing your gasoline is annoying.

A neighbor repeatedly walking into your backyard to steal it is considerably worse.

The homeowner could have spent weeks arguing with him, putting up signs, or trying to convince him to stop.

Instead, he found out exactly who was taking the gas, waited for the perfect opportunity, and let the thief discover that sometimes taking something without permission comes with unexpected consequences.

The best revenge stories don’t require elaborate speeches.

Sometimes, you just leave the can exactly where the thief expects to find it.

And let curiosity do the rest.
