It’s more of a stand-up routine than a photoshoot when you’re hanging out with Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy, the team behind this summer’s action-comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Their laughter fills the room as they playfully banter and top each other’s outrageous jokes.
This isn’t surprising given their film’s pedigree. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the latest installment in the highly successful “Deadpool” franchise, known for pushing boundaries with its dark humor and violence. Reynolds, who reprises his role as the wisecracking mercenary Deadpool, and Jackman, returning as the gruff Wolverine, perfectly embody this bawdy tone.
Jackman even admits he initially missed playing Wolverine after his last solo outing, the critically acclaimed but somber “Logan” (2017). He playfully recalls his sudden change of heart: “I didn’t miss it for a long time. And then, literally, it came to me one day as I was driving down to the beach. I knew I wanted to do this. I literally stopped the car, got out and called Ryan [Reynolds].”
This reunion comes at a pivotal time for the superhero genre. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has delivered numerous blockbusters, recent entries haven’t fared as well. “Deadpool & Wolverine” marks a shift for the MCU, embracing a more mature tone with its R-rating.
Traditionally known for its family-friendly content, Disney (owner of Marvel Studios) is taking a risk with “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Marvel chief Kevin Feige even admits to having initial reservations about the film’s humor: “There’s a line in the red-band trailer… about pegging,” Feige says. “There were people I work with who didn’t know what it was. I had to explain it to them.”
The film also represents a chance for redemption for Reynolds and Jackman. Their first encounter as these characters in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was poorly received by fans. However, this experience fueled Reynolds’ determination to do Deadpool justice. His 2016 solo film, “Deadpool,” was a massive success, proving the character’s potential.
Deadpool & Wolverine” finds Wade Wilson (Deadpool) attempting a quieter life as a used-car salesman. However, his plans are disrupted by the Time Variance Authority, who enlist him and Wolverine on a mission across the multiverse. This unlikely duo – the serious Wolverine and the silly Deadpool – promise an action-packed adventure filled with plenty of laughs (and probably some blood).
