Husband Enters Beer Store Before Recovery Date And Realizes His Marriage Is On The Line

Recovery is often filled with difficult moments, especially when someone is trying to rebuild trust after hurting the people they love. A single decision can feel like a setback, even when the person is genuinely trying to change.

The original poster (OP) had been separated from his wife and young child after his drinking problem reached a breaking point. He started taking steps toward recovery and hoped a planned date would show his wife that he was making progress.

However, while waiting for her, OP found himself facing an old temptation that nearly changed everything. Read on to see what happened when OP’s honesty led to an unexpected reaction.

Husband Enters Beer Store Before Recovery Date And Realizes His Marriage Is On The Line

Long story short, I’ve had a drinking problem for a while.

My wife finally got sick of me being constantly drunk around her and our 5-month-old, and moved in with her parents about 3 weeks ago until I got my s__t...

I signed up for rehab, got prescribed naltrexone, and started going to support meetings, all the things she wants me to do before she comes home.

We were supposed to have a nice date today, have lunch at the place we went on our first date and go thrifting this afternoon.

She winds up running a bit late, so I park and walk around downtown until I wind up at a beer store I used to visit.

I decided to go in and look around while I was waiting for her.

She called to let me know what had been delaying her, and I told her I was at the beer shop and I was thinking about getting a drink.

I told her this because I thought, “she’ll appreciate the honesty, and she’ll be able to tell me to leave instead of messing up.”

Instead, she gets chilly, cancels our plans, and tells me that this might be the end. Currently trying not to spiral and failing..

Late lunch: cherry lime bubbly water and used tissues because I feel sick :(. EDIT: Okay folks, message received. I’ll be at inpatient rehab in 12 hours.

Recovery often begins with a difficult realization: wanting to change and proving change are two different things. A person can genuinely regret the harm they have caused and still discover that the people around them need time before they believe things are different.

That seems to be the painful moment this man experienced. After his drinking problem damaged his marriage and affected his family life, his wife moved out temporarily with their five-month-old child.

He began taking steps toward recovery by entering treatment, taking prescribed medication, and attending support meetings. He wanted to show her that he was serious about changing.

Then, during what was supposed to be a hopeful date, he found himself standing inside a store connected to his old drinking habits. He told his wife he was thinking about buying alcohol because he believed his honesty would allow her to help stop him. Instead, she reacted by canceling the plans and questioning whether the relationship could continue.

The emotional conflict here is complicated. From his perspective, admitting the craving may have felt like progress because he did not hide it or secretly drink. From his wife’s perspective, the situation may have confirmed her deepest fear: that even after everything that happened, alcohol was still close enough to become part of their day together.

A different perspective is that addiction recovery changes the meaning of small moments. For someone without a history of alcohol misuse, walking into a beer store may be meaningless. For someone rebuilding trust after repeated drinking around a partner and infant, it can represent danger, instability, and the possibility of returning to an old pattern.

Psychologist and addiction researcher Dr. Alan Marlatt’s work on relapse prevention emphasizes that recovery involves recognizing high-risk situations, developing coping strategies, and planning how to respond to triggers before they occur.

He explained that cravings and risky moments are common parts of recovery, but successful change depends on preparation and new behaviors rather than relying only on willpower.

This perspective does not mean the OP’s honesty had no value. Transparency is important, especially in addiction recovery. But honesty is only one part of rebuilding trust. The person who was hurt may need to see consistent choices over time before feeling safe again.

His wife’s reaction may also reflect accumulated exhaustion rather than only this single incident. She was not responding only to the possibility of one drink. She was responding to months or years of feeling affected by his drinking and having to protect herself and their child from its consequences.

The update that he chose inpatient rehabilitation shows an important shift. Instead of focusing only on whether his wife would forgive him, he appears to have recognized that he needed a stronger recovery structure.

Addiction can create a painful cycle where one person desperately wants immediate proof that they are changing, while the people around them need patience and evidence before they can trust again. Both realities can exist at the same time.

A marriage damaged by addiction is rarely repaired through one conversation or one promise. It is rebuilt through repeated actions, accountability, and a long period of showing that the person choosing recovery is no longer asking their loved ones to carry the weight of it.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters focused on personal responsibility, arguing that sobriety has to come from the individual rather than being enforced by a partner

AsleepEntertainer440 − Holy s__t, man. Talk about a severe lapse in judgement.

I suspect she expects you to be either all in or all out on the sobriety if she had already given you an ultimatum.

jontonsoup4 − she’ll be able to tell me to leave instead of messing up You have to tell yourself to leave. Your addiction isn't on her

No-Professional-1884 − I get why you said that, but she’s not your sponsor. You’re supposed to be trying to show her you’re a changed man. But you didn’t.

This commenter shared a perspective from their own experience with alcoholism, stressing that choosing sobriety often requires avoiding situations that could trigger drinking

EmotionalLecture9318 − Grow up buddy. You have an a__oholic issue. Going to a beer store to look around? F__king seriously?

You need to stay as far away from booze as possible if you want to have a chance at any valid functional relationship with your Family.

I'm am a__oholic, so please bear with me here.

You can choose alcohol and have it and be a f__k up, or you can choose sobriety and have everything else life has to offer except alcohol.

There is no having both. My best friend chose alcohol over his marriage, his two beautiful kids, his very good career, and his loving family and friends.

He's now crippled from a__oholic neuropathy and has nothing.

Choose life Not alcohol.

These users highlighted the impact of alcohol-related struggles on the spouse and child, emphasizing the need for meaningful change

Livid_Note_2170 − Bro, she is parenting a baby by herself. Come on. Your child and your wife deserve better.

Shoddy_Matter_4940 − Yeah it's on you to change your behavior and not for her to have to tell you not to. I can see why she backed out

These commenters viewed the visit to the beer store as a major setback after previous discussions about quitting drinking

mizushimo − I think your casual response that you were in the beer store and were going to get a beer and drink it on your first date

after the blowup about you being an a__oholic gave her the most startling moment of clarity she's ever had in her life

Laguna-VIII − I dunno what advice you want here, you must know you shouldn't walked in there in the first place.

These users suggested the behavior may reflect self-sabotage or an internal conflict between wanting sobriety and wanting alcohol

Particular_Ad_4694 − There is definitely a reason you said what you said to her, and I cant tell you what it is.

Maybe a form of self sabotage, maybe some way of asking for help, but subconscious and unhealthy nonetheless.

You need to do some serious soul searching to kick this habit, and stop dragging the people in your life down with you.

Until then, I dont blame your wife.

Kil0- − You just want to drink and subconsciously your mind saw her as the barrier stopping you. But is that what you want.

Can a relationship recover after addiction damages trust? How much time should loved ones give someone trying to change? Share your thoughts below.
