Man Locks His Bedroom After Mom’s Boyfriend Keeps Using His Towel and Calls Him “Territorial”

in Social Issues

Sharing a home with family can work perfectly well when everyone respects each other’s space.

But once someone starts treating personal belongings like communal property, even a small issue can become a much bigger argument about boundaries.

The original poster (OP) is a 30-year-old man who lives with his mother and pays rent.

Trouble started when he realized his mom’s boyfriend had been using his private bathroom and even drying off with OP’s towel without asking.

After being told it was “just a towel,” OP installed a lock on his bedroom door to protect his space.

Now his mother thinks he is making the house uncomfortable, while her boyfriend calls him territorial.

Read on to see whether OP is overreacting or simply setting a reasonable boundary.

Man living with his mother sets boundaries after discovering her boyfriend repeatedly used his personal towel without permission

not the actual photo

'AIO for putting a lock on my room because my mom’s boyfriend doesn’t understand boundaries?'

I (30M) know everyone’s gonna get hung up on the fact that I live with my mom, so just get

that out of your system now. I pay rent every month. It’s cheaper than throwing money away

on an apartment just because society thinks you’re supposed to move out by a certain age.. Anyways.

My mom’s been dating this guy for like 8 months now and he’s over here basically every day.

We don’t really interact. I mostly keep to myself in my room on my PC.

A couple weeks ago I grabbed my towel after my shower and it was already damp. I figured

maybe I was just remembering wrong or something.. Then it happened again. This time it

smelled like his Old Spice body wash. Like REALLY obvious.

I asked my mom if she’d used my bathroom and she was like “Oh no, it was probably Steve

(fake name). The hallway bathroom was occupied.”. So later I asked him and he literally just

laughed and went “yeah man lol, hope that’s cool.”. Uh… no?

Who just uses another guy’s towel? Genuinely asking because I thought this was one of those

things everyone knew not to do.

I told him not to use my bathroom anymore. He kept saying “it’s just a towel” over and over

like that somehow made it normal.

So, I went and bought a locking doorknob for my bedroom because my bathroom is

attached to it. If somebody thinks using my towel without asking is acceptable, I honestly

don’t know what else they think is fair game. Today it’s my towel, tomorrow it’s my PC or my

headset or whatever.

My mom found out because she couldn’t get into my room one day and now she’s saying I’m

making the house awkward and treating her boyfriend like he’s a criminal. He made some

comment about me being “territorial.”. I mean… yeah? I kinda am when it comes to my

personal space.

My sister says I need to “chill tf out”. I don’t agree. To me it’s not even about the towel, it’s

the fact that someone thought they could just help themselves to my stuff without even

asking.. AIO?

Sometimes a conflict that looks ridiculously small from the outside is really about whether someone feels entitled to cross a line simply because they personally do not understand why the line matters.

A towel can be replaced. The feeling that another person believes your privacy is negotiable is much harder to shrug off.

OP’s reaction makes sense because this was not an accidental one-time mix-up.

His mother’s boyfriend used his attached bathroom, used his personal towel, admitted it casually, and then dismissed the objection with “it’s just a towel.”

That response is what turned an awkward hygiene issue into a boundary problem.

OP clearly communicated that he did not want Steve using that space.

Instead of respecting the request, Steve minimized it, while OP’s mother and sister focused more on OP’s reaction than on the original behavior.

The lock therefore appears less like paranoia and more like an attempt to enforce a boundary that words had failed to protect.

There is also an important difference between being “territorial” and wanting reasonable privacy.

OP is 30, pays rent, and occupies a specific bedroom and bathroom area.

Living with a parent does not automatically erase the expectation that personal possessions and private spaces will be respected.

At the same time, jumping immediately from towel use to fears about someone taking the PC or headset may reflect how quickly trust can deteriorate once a smaller boundary is dismissed.

The towel itself is minor; the uncertainty about what else Steve considers fair game is not.

That distinction strongly supports OP’s decision. He did not destroy Steve’s belongings, threaten him, or forbid his mother from dating him. He installed a lock on his own bedroom so someone who had ignored his request could no longer enter his private area. That is a consequence tied directly to access, not revenge.

The better long-term solution is probably to clarify household expectations with his mother: which rooms are shared, which are private, and whether paying rent gives OP exclusive use of that bedroom and bathroom.

If everyone understands the arrangement, there is less room for Steve to frame basic privacy as hostility.

OP may indeed be territorial, but personal territory is exactly what boundaries are meant to define.

The bigger problem is not caring strongly about a towel. It is being told that someone else gets to decide which of his possessions are too insignificant to deserve permission.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters stressed that paying rent gives OP a reasonable right to privacy and a locked room

sitnquiet − Might be a good conversation to start with your mother: "Why were YOU trying to

get in to my room? " I mean, you pay rent. You can expect a degree of privacy. It is the only

"territory" you have. If that is not available, then you have to find other accommodations, but

you are doing nothing to the "awkwardness" of the house.

Leave your doorknob alone and they will never have to feel awkward or criminal or anything. NOR

abiglumpwithknobs1 − NOR, if you're paying rent to stay there you should rightfully be

allowed to put a lock on your door and ensure no one else is going in there.

Top_Philosopher1809 − NOR. Sharing someone’s towel is disgusting. Married over 30 years

and that is a hard no. Now, you are a grown man who is paying rent. That makes you a

tenant. This means you have every right to your privacy. I can’t blame you for putting a lock

on your door. I would make sure it is not one easy to tamper with.

Anyone, especially a grown adult that thinks it’s ok to use someone else’s towel is just n__ty.

They have issues. The fact your mom doesn’t have a problem with it just means he hasn’t

used hers yet. Keep your distance and keep anything valuable or important keep under lock

and key. This guy has issues.

These commenters agreed that using someone else’s towel is gross, strange, and unacceptable

Mountain-Series4035 − NOR, using ANYONES towel is weird. Them joking about it is even

weirder. Your mom being upset about you wanting privacy? Extremely creepy.

Creative-Explorer689 − I won’t share a towel with my husband even after 32 years together.

So I’m on your side (nothing wrong with living at home just as long as you save what you can)

dewihafta − Gross. Im particular about always using a dry towel because i grew up in a house

where six of us had to split two. Nor

These commenters were disturbed that the boyfriend entered OP’s room, used the bathroom, and handled personal belongings

DetectiveClear6734 − NOR Ew. What kind of animal just goes through someone’s room to

use their bathroom and towels? I bet he’s the one who’s trying to mark his territory and get

you to move out.

cowboythesis − NOR he was going through your room, showering in your bathroom, and

using your towel? ?? that's wild

Available_Shelter194 − They are all going in your room and messing with your belongings

while you’re away…your sister is weird too cause if she had a roommate that used her towel

she’d be pissed af

These commenters suggested moving out may be the only way to guarantee full privacy and independence

Monday0987 − throwing money away on an apartment just because society thinks you’re

supposed to move out by a certain age. One reason why people move out, other than

"society", is because their parents don't treat their bedrooms as their private spaces. The

parents still treat their adult son's bedroom the same way they did when he was a minor.

This is the problem you are having with your mother at the moment and you may have to

move out to fix it

aquamarine1029 − Your mother's boyfriend is creepy af, and it's alarming your mother

doesn't see this. She's putting this man over her own son which is just pathetic, although I'm

betting it's not the first time. Move out and start your own life.

swishcandot − NOR but buddy, this is why people "waste money" on rent

OP’s situation shows that the conflict was never really about a towel. It was about boundaries and respect inside a shared home.

Living with a parent as an adult does not mean giving up all expectations of privacy, especially when someone enters your personal space and uses your belongings without asking.

The boyfriend may have viewed it as a harmless mistake, but dismissing OP’s discomfort made the issue bigger.

Do you think OP overreacted by installing a lock, or was setting a firm boundary the right move after his privacy was ignored?
