Husband Gets Tired Of His Wife’s Pinching, But Reddit Questions His Behavior Too

in Social Issues

A husband reaches his breaking point after years of feeling controlled by his wife’s habit of physically correcting him in public.

This Redditor explains that after 20 years of marriage, his wife has developed a pattern of pinching him whenever she disagrees with something he says or does. He says he has repeatedly asked her to stop because it makes him feel like he is being treated like a child rather than a partner.

The frustration finally boiled over during his son’s graduation when his wife pinched him after he adjusted another student’s outfit for photos. Later, while traveling in Europe, another pinch over a simple disagreement pushed him to confront the behavior directly.

'AITAH for snapping at my wife's constant pinching?'

I am a 51 year old man married to my 53 YO wife for 20 years this year.

My wife has a nag for pinching me whenever I interact with other people to what, in her eyes, is inappropriate behavior.

Recently, over the last 2 months these interactions have been more and more frequent.

I have spoken to her to stop doing it for it makes me feel like I am not her husband but one more child she has to discipline.

Last month I reached my limit when we were at my son's graduation.

All of the kids were in their togas with just a shirt and no tie.

I find this completely distasteful since young men have to be taught how to dress according to the situation.

This was not decided by parents but by the graduation organizing committee (a group of parents mind you).

Before the ceremony began I took my own tie and put it on my son. He was the only one with a tie.

I like photography a lot, so I began taking some pictures of him with my camera.

Another couple, parents to one of my son's friend, asked me to take a few pictures of them on another event and since they liked the results

so much they asked me during the ceremony to take some pictures of his son after the ceremony.

So I agreed. However he did not have a tie and I asked my son to take off his tie and I putt it on the other kid.

Instantly I felt my wife's fingers pressing against my skin in disapproval. I took no mind so I kept going to what I was doing.

After the ceremony was done and we were walking to wards the car she began lecturing me on how invasive and how rude I had been etc etc.

I told her that when oh when would she ever accept me as I am. If someone asks a favor of me I'd do it my own way in the...

We got home, but I had steam coming out of my head by this point.

I went upstairs to my son´s room and asked him if he was ready to go to his religious ceremony.

He said he was. so I asked him which tie he was going to wear so he said he didn't know.

Immediately my wife jumped and said "no tie is required". So I snapped "Fine, let him go in a T-Shirt then!"

My wife then got mad at me and told me I was making a scene and disrupting the mood etc etc etc...

I told her all she was doing was undermining my efforts as a father to raise a son in important occasions.

We did not speak all day that day. Except in church she asked me "do you mind if...." I didnt let her finish I just said "lets just do whatever...

The next day was the graduation party and she asked me to put the incident behind us in order to

have a nice time at the party so I agreed. Also 3 days later we would be leaving to a 3 week vacation to Europe.

We got to Europe with another couple, colleague from my residency training at the hospital and his wife. Also another friend of ours joined us.

We got to prague and everything was going great. However my friend´s wife developed a cold and soon after I caught it also.

We were in Amsterdam after visiting Prague during a Heat wave so I guess the temperature change hit me bad.

I began with a terrible sore throat and my wife had brought down some benzocaine (local anesthetic) cough drops.

Her intentions was to give them to my friend´s wife.

However my throat was so bad the second i saw them I said "oh man I could use one of those" and reached out.

Immediately I felt her finger pressing against my skin and I did not give 2 shits how far away from home we were and for how long we would be...

I snapped. I took her far from the group and Told her "STOP IT! JUST STOP IT! THIS BEHAVIOR OF YOURS HAS TO STOP! YOU ARE DRIVING ME NUTS!"

After that and to this day we have been giving each other the silent treatment.

Later that night after a few drinks watching the world cup I asked both of my friends in all honesty if they felt I had done something wrong.

They said no they didn't see any disrespect at all.

I sent a message to this kid's dad asking him if he had taken offense in doing what I did and he said he was glad I did it

because the pics turned out great and he had not thought of putting on a tie on him.

So I would like to put to a vote and perhaps get a non biased opinion on what has been going on.

I have been married to this woman for almost 20 years and it has been hoop after hoop after hoop i have to jump and nothing seems to make her...

Its been years since we last had s__ because even in that arena she has a say.

I understand it is a couple thing but when you NEVER perform accordingly, it becomes a patter and quite frankly I am tired of trying..

I have been contemplating divorce seriously. Quite seriously. However IDK if i am overreacting. So tel mme. AITAH?

EDIT: since so many people are asking about the s__ comment, the idea is that she always has something to complain about.

It is never good enough. there's always something wrong. Or too fast or too slow, or too hard....you get the idea.

I know this is might sound weird to some people, particularly young ones

or ones who are not married or who are recently married, or couples who do not have any issues at home.

However, it is quite common in couples with marital issues.

Also I would like to clarify I am not a native speaker, so if my words are not accurate to express what s going on I apologize.

Also, I have been getting a lot of heat from referring to my wife as "this woman".

I have heard many times in conversations referring to one's spouse as "This man" or "This woman"

It might sound harsh i get it, but not as harsh as "this b__ch" or any other adjective that is clearly offensive.

All your insight is being taken into consideration and I am weighing all opinions,

however I did not expect this post to get the attention it got.. All of your insight is welcome. Thank you all.

Also I would be grateful if you could just suggest in your eyes how to be less of an a__hole.. Thanks

Edit 2: contrary to what some might think, I love her very much and I know she is a great person, otherwise I would not have married her.

The only 2 reasons a person remains married this long in a "bad" relationship is because of 2 reasons: 1. you are both dysfunctional,

or 2. you really love that person. Not everyone gets to figure it out as fast as others

A relationship can slowly become exhausting when small moments of correction turn into a pattern where one person feels controlled rather than loved. In long-term partnerships, the biggest conflicts are often not about the individual incidents themselves, but about what those incidents represent.

A pinch, a comment, or a disagreement may seem minor from the outside, yet repeated moments of feeling criticized can create resentment over time.

In this situation, the original poster was not only upset about being pinched. He felt that the gesture represented a deeper problem in the marriage: feeling treated like someone who needed to be managed instead of respected as an equal partner.

His wife appears to have been trying to communicate disapproval in the moment, possibly because she felt he was crossing social boundaries or making decisions without considering others.

However, using a physical gesture to correct a spouse—especially after being asked repeatedly to stop—can create a parent-child dynamic that damages intimacy.

A different perspective is that both partners may be reacting to years of unresolved frustration. OP’s actions at the graduation show that he values tradition, presentation, and helping others, but his wife may have experienced some of those choices as controlling or unnecessary. For example, changing another graduate’s appearance without being asked could be interpreted differently depending on the person.

The father who received the photos appreciated the gesture, but his wife may have been reacting to a larger pattern rather than that single moment. At the same time, repeatedly pinching an adult partner to signal disapproval is not a healthy communication strategy. A marriage cannot function when one person acts as the evaluator and the other feels like they are constantly trying to avoid penalties.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman, co-founder of The Gottman Institute, has studied how repeated negative interactions can damage relationships. His research highlights the importance of replacing criticism and contempt with respectful communication, emotional understanding, and direct conversations about needs.

Psychologist Dr. Sue Johnson, creator of Emotionally Focused Therapy, explains that many relationship conflicts are actually expressions of deeper emotional needs, such as wanting respect, reassurance, or to feel valued by a partner.

This insight suggests that the pinching is probably a symptom rather than the entire problem. OP’s frustration seems connected to feeling constantly judged, while his wife may be trying to express concerns but using a method that creates more distance. The solution is not deciding who “wins” each disagreement. It is understanding the emotional pattern both people are stuck in.

A healthier next step would be a serious conversation outside of conflict moments, where both partners focus on specific behaviors rather than personal attacks. OP should be able to say that physical correction is not acceptable, and his wife should have space to explain what behaviors make her uncomfortable without relying on gestures that feel humiliating.

After two decades together, the goal should not be proving who is right. It should be rebuilding the feeling that they are on the same team.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters believed the wife’s pinching was wrong but suspected OP’s behavior contributed to the conflict

Organic_Eggplant_323 − “I have spoken to her to stop doing it for it makes me feel like I am not her husband but one more child she has to discipline....

How do you think it makes your wife feel to feel like she has to manage your behavior like a child?

Your wife shouldn’t pinch you but tbh, after reading this I don’t think she is actually PINCHING

you as much as trying to discretely get you to check your inappropriate and insufferable behaviors.

I’d wager these “pinches” don’t hurt anything except your pride. If you’re tired of being managed, maybe you need to look at your own behavior.

In case I wasn’t clear - YTA Edited to add - thank you for the award!

DreamExtraordinaire − Potential ESH? Pinching, if it actually hurts and isnt just to get your attention, could easily be replaced with healthier forms of communication.

You sound like a miserable husband to have regardless, though, so 🤷🏽‍♀️. Leaning heavily toward YTA.

There is a time and a place for everything, and establishing your weird manly pseudo-dominance loudly

in public (be it snide comments, trying to needlessly parent someone elses kid, or literally yelling at your wife in front of other people) rather than a calm private discussion...

I have a feeling any other form of trying to chat it out would backfire on her eventually

anyhow since you see intimacy as an 'arena' where her having a say in her consent is apparently a problem for you.

The fact that she has to *repeatedly ask you to calm down* and 'just get through this event peacefully',

essentially, is a much bigger problem than her nonverbal queue that you are acting like a bigot to begin with.

Glass_Aardvark_9917 − I’d put money on this “pinching” being a squeeze at best. This is clearly not a reliable narrator.

These Redditors criticized OP for imposing his personal standards on others, especially regarding clothing choices

Tls-user − Your wife pinching you is unacceptable, but frankly if every single other kid was wearing a shirt and no tie it seems weird that you made your son...

My son graduated college in April and he and his roommates all wore nice dress shirts but no ties.

Same for high school graduation two years ago. Ties are absolutely not necessary

Altruistic_Canary951 − I didn't even finish past you stating you tried to force someone else's kids to wear your son's tie because YOU feel it's unacceptable to go without.

They were meeting the dress code set by the authority board of the graduating committee, therefore, not your place to insult it or try to over ride it.

For your son? Fine, but never someone else's child.

Frankly, the audacity is unreal.

However, that being said, I don't agree your wife should pinch you, you DO have the right to bodily autonomy, even if you're being an entitled, opinionated jerk.

I feel sorry for your family, and would be embarrassed if my husband behaved this way. ..... BUT I wouldn't pinch him if he asked me to stop.

Second edit to change my vote to ESH as both of you are in the wrong.

VelvetTears2525 − Maybe I read it wrong but your wife acquiring medicine for someone else

and you decide to snag it instead of asking her if you could have one.

I'm not saying you are the AH but you do lack manners or at the bare minimum simple politeness. However, she should not be pinching you. Seek therapy.

This group felt both partners had issues and suggested their relationship problems went beyond the specific incident

SmaeShavo − ESH get a divorce. She shouldnt be pinching you.

But it also must be terribly embarrassing for her to have to put up with your self righteous attitude and nosey actions all the time.

Free her and yourself you are not a good match.

Also what the f__k was the "we havent had s__ in years because even here she has a say?"

Why wouldnt your wife have a say in a consensual activity between people that involves her? Very strange thing to include.

Street_Buffalo_2503 − ESH Your wife is definitely an a__hole for pinching you, there’s no excuse for acting like a child.

But in your own words: “If someone asks a favor of me I'd do it my own way in the way I see fit for the best outcome.“

“I have been married to this woman for almost 20 years and it has been hoop after hoop after hoop i have to jump and nothing seems to make her...

You sound like an obnoxious bore who hates his wife.

Butterbacon − I mean, she shouldn’t pinch you but you definitely sound like an a__hole.

TarzanKitty − Your wife is clearly sick of your s__t and I can’t blame her.

You thought you got to dictate what someone else’s adult child should be wearing? Are you always such a controlling p__ck?

Do you think the wife crossed a line, or was the pinching only a symptom of bigger problems? Share your thoughts below!
