Indian Man Eats Indian Food In Indian Way At Indian Restaurant, Waiter Calls It Unhygienic And Uncivilized

A homesick Indian man in his early thirties sat down to a plate of perfectly spiced biryani in an American restaurant that felt like a piece of home. He ate the rice the traditional way: with clean hands, savoring every familiar bite.

Moments later a waiter approached and sharply told him eating that way was unhygienic and uncivilized, insisting he should use a spoon instead. The quiet, comforting meal turned into an awkward confrontation that left him humiliated. The incident reached the restaurant owner, a friend of the customer, and soon the waiter was no longer employed.

An Indian eating biryani with his hands in an Indian restaurant faced rude judgment from a waiter.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for getting a waiter fired because he accused me of being "unhygienic and uncivilized"?'

Throwaway. So I (32M) am an Indian living in the US, I recently moved to this country and have just been settling in.

Two days ago I went to a restaurant owned by a friend of mine who is also Indian.

The restaurant serves authentic Indian cuisine and I really needed that familiar meal since I've been feeling very homesick since I got here.

In the restaurant I ordered a rice dish called biryani and it looked and tasted exactly like the biryani I'd get back home,

and it honestly made me a bit emotional that I had to eat it with just my hand (no spoon or other cutlery) exactly as I would do if I...

My hands were clean and sanitized and I was being neat and unhurried in the way I ate.

I didn't think anyone noticed it since it is an Indian restaurant with a lot of Indians/desi people.

But few minutes into my meal a waiter walked up to me and asked me if my spoon was dirty and if I needed one, I said no,

and then he sort of just stared at me, and I realized his question probably had something to do with me eating with my hand, I just kinda smiled and...

"Where I come from they say eating with your hand makes the food tastier," and went back to eating.

He then said, "Well where I come from that's unhygienic so please use a spoon for the rice."

I was very surprised and insulted, I told him that was incredibly rude and he should mind his own business.

The waiter went away looking mad, and I didn't hear from him after that.

I finished my meal with my hand, cleaned up and then thanked the waiter who was actually serving me, paid + tipped him and left.

Yesterday my friend called me to ask how the food in his restaurant was and if I enjoyed it, I obviously told him I loved it,

but then I couldn't help but mention the tiny incident that happened, my friend was appalled and said he was gonna fire him,

he said the waiter was a very new hire too so he wasn't completely trained,

but he couldn't afford hiring someone r__ist in a place where a lot of Indians would come.

I thought that's perfectly understandable and didn't really say anything else.

I told this whole story to one of my friends and he said while it was an insulting and rude thing to do,

it's not something that should warrant firing and I shouldn't have mentioned it to my friend, the owner,

since service workers have very hard jobs anyway and there’s no need to make their lives harder. So now I'm confused AITA?

Dining out should be a relaxing escape, but sometimes it feels more like walking into a minefield of judgment. In this case, the Redditor was simply enjoying his meal the way he was raised, eating biryani with his clean hands, a practice deeply rooted in Indian culture that enhances flavor and connection to the food.

The waiter, however, saw it as a breach of Western hygiene standards and decided to voice that opinion directly to the customer.

What makes this incident sting is the waiter’s choice of words: labeling the act “unhygienic and uncivilized.” That’s not just a suggestion to use a spoon; it’s a judgment on an entire cultural tradition.

From the waiter’s perspective, he may have thought he was enforcing restaurant norms or protecting other diners. But the reality is that he was working in an Indian restaurant, where such customs are common among both staff and patrons. His comment came across as ignorant at best and disrespectful at worst.

The owner’s decision to fire the waiter has sparked debate. Some argue that a new hire deserves training rather than termination, especially if the comment stemmed from a genuine (if misguided) concern. Others point out that in a restaurant catering to a largely Indian clientele, the ability to respect cultural practices is non-negotiable.

The owner clearly felt that keeping the waiter would risk alienating customers and he acted accordingly.

This situation highlights a broader issue: cultural insensitivity in the service industry. According to the National Restaurant Association’s 2022 DEI Survey Report, 92% of restaurant operators have dedicated diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, yet only 30% of current employees believe these programs have a positive impact on the workplace. That gap can lead to exactly these kinds of misunderstandings.

Leonora Billings-Harris, President and CEO of UbuntuGlobal and a diversity strategist, has emphasized the importance of nonjudgmental approaches in cross-cultural interactions.

In a 2023 article on CultureAlly, she stated: “Diversity, inclusion, respect and fairness are concepts that make some people reluctant to discuss them. I work hard to create a safe, nonjudgmental and uplifting environment that makes exploring sensitive topics a positive journey for all…”

She added: “All programs, processes and resources reflect my belief that we are all more effective, productive and innovative when we honor and value our own uniqueness while at the same time valuing and respecting the differences of others.”

In this restaurant scenario, the waiter’s lack of cultural competence turned a simple meal into a humiliating experience for the customer. While firing may seem harsh, it underscores a key point: businesses that serve specific cultural communities must prioritize staff who can respect those communities’ norms.

So what’s the takeaway? Restaurants can prevent these incidents with better onboarding and training. Customers can speak up when they feel disrespected. And all of us can take a moment to learn about the customs of the people around us, because a little curiosity goes a long way.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

Some people believe the waiter was rude and ignorant for judging the OP’s cultural way of eating.

Thamnophis660 − How you eat your food is 100% your business, as long as you're not being disruptive and/or causing anyone any harm.

And it sounds like you definitely weren't doing either. He can mind his own business.

One would think a waiter at an Indian restaurant would know better too. NTA

faevalen − Hi. White as Hell Westerner here! NTA. Like. In any way, shape or form.

The waiter was ignorant and rude - there was a chance for redemption there when you explained why you were eating with your hands,

but instead he decided to be judgmental and disrespect your culture.

As a bonus, you didn’t even tell your friend about it with the intention of getting him fired

(and you were well in your right to complain and seek that consequence regardless) but your friend decided that they wouldn’t tolerate that behaviour.

You did them a favour, honestly. I’m disgusted every time I go to a non western takeout/restaurant and the entitled way westerners' (specifically us white westerners) act

and disrespect the people eating AND serving. It’s awful and I’m glad you weren’t silent :) Not the a__hole <3

Aggravating_Piece232 − NTA. It's an Indian restaurant for Pete's sake.

How does he work at an Indian restaurant and not understand that a lot of people from India eat with their hands? Jeez.

fastyellowtuesday − NTA. I lived in India for two years. I eat Indian food with my hands (ok, just the right hand) no matter where I am.

I'd lose half my enjoyment immediately if I were required to use forks and spoons.

Indian restaurants are some of the only places it's culturally accepted to eat with your hands.

I would be FURIOUS if someone told me to use a spoon in an Indian restaurant. I would absolutely complain whether or not I knew the owner.

Anyone who works in an Indian restaurant for more than a day and doesn't know it's ok to eat Indian food with your hands is an i__ot

(has he never watched someone use bread to scoop curry??) and not the person you want involved in that cultural experience.

He can go work in a diner if he wants customers to adhere to US manners/ customs.

(It was rude af to call the way a customer eats unsanitary, even if it actually had been, which this was not.)

Some people argue the OP is NTA because reporting the incident was appropriate, and the firing was the owner’s decision.

Stoat__King − NTA. All you did was tell your friend what happened. If the guy gets fired, thats on your friend, the restaurant owner.

And he should be fired imo. Waiting staff that are rude to customers are a liability.

sandithepirate − NTA - the client base will likely be Indians, so he can't afford to alienate and offend them.

However, can't he just educate the waiter on cultural norms, since the waiter is new? If it grosses the guy out so much, he can find another job.

BoomButton − NTA. You didn't try to get him fired, you reported a possible staff problem to your friend.

It was your friend's decision to fire him instead of training him to expect that some customers may prefer to eat in a traditional way.

[Reddit User] − NTA. I am a former waiter, so I was ready to be on the waiter's side.

But a waiter should never insult a customer and should never tell a customer how to eat.

I assume this waiter - in an Indian restaurant - might not be aware of the customs of Indian table manners,

but the owner certainly can't afford to lose customers because of the waiter's ignorance.

Had you not told the boss, the waiter may have alienated many customers. Those customers who are not friends of the owner would never come back.

Whether the owner should have fired the waiter vs. train the waiter is another issue.

Others support the OP while acknowledging the cultural context and welcoming them.

TotallyNotRonSwanson − NTA. The waiter said something pretty damn ignorant.

I would say some teaching about cultural norms would be in order but India is pretty diverse; does the waiter have a year or two?

Haha As for the firing, that's the owner's prerogative. OP didn't "get him fired."

But the real question/issue here... where is this restaurant that makes such good food that it makes a man change the way he initially ate based only on the feels?!...

glasswoodrock − NTA, sorry you experienced this. By the way, welcome to the states!

I have lived in other countries and I understand it's hard to get acclimated.

In the end, this Redditor just wanted a taste of home and instead got a side of judgment. The waiter’s comment was out of line, and the owner made a call based on protecting his business and his customers.

Do you think the firing was justified, or should the waiter have gotten a second chance with some training? Have you ever experienced a cultural misunderstanding at a restaurant? Drop your thoughts in the comments, we’d love to hear them!
