Is “Cat Support” a Real Thing? This Ex Seems to Think So

We have all heard of child support, but have you ever heard of “cat support”? Breakups are already quite difficult, especially when you have shared pets that feel like furry little family members. Most people expect to split the furniture and the friend group, but one woman found herself in a very unusual financial arrangement with her ex-girlfriend.

After adopting two cats together and then splitting up, she tried to do the kind thing by sending money for food and vet bills. However, a year later, the situation turned from a friendly gesture into a heated conflict. When she finally decided to stop the payments to save for her own family, she was met with a very surprising reaction.

This story takes a look at what happens when the lines between being a “pet parent” and a legal owner get very blurry.

The Story

Is "Cat Support" a Real Thing? This Ex Seems to Think So
Not the actual photo

AITA: For no longer paying cat support to my ex who took our adopted cats after the break up?

My girlfriend and I adopted 2 cats together and a year later broke up, and due to moving arrangements and a long discussion on not seperating them

we decided she would take them. I visited them a couple times, then due to covid and also my ex and I having a hard time getting along,

I never really got to see them anymore. Every couple of months when I could I'd send some cash her way to go towards the cats food/litter/vet bills,

it wasnt much but I was trying to be a good "parent". Recently she informed me she was moving (with the cats) interstate, but a few weeks later

messages me asking for money for the boys vet bills..... i was a bit over still being involved in her life

so told her I wasnt comfortable sending money anymore and needed to be a little selfish since im trying to save to fly home and see my sick grandparent.

Plus she was moving and the cats wont be in my life at all anymore. Basically because of this I was told I am a dead beat dad??

(im a girl first of all so thats funny), and then she told me she would come and take back a laptop she gave me as a gift

so she can sell it and I owe her .... My question is, am I the a__hole for discontinuing the financial support for the cats?

Am i still responsible for them even though theyre no longer apart of my life? EDIT: i just want to thank each and every one of

you for your kind words and support, you have all confirmed with me something i already knew- my ex manipulated me and my caring nature was

taken advantage of. I am so happy to be out of this toxic relationship and all of your encouraging words has truly uplifted me and given me my power back!!...

Oh, my heart really goes out to anyone trying to do the right thing after a relationship ends. It sounds like this woman truly cared about those cats and wanted to make sure they were well fed and healthy. It is so easy to let our emotions guide our bank accounts when we are feeling guilty or sad.

However, it is a little bit shocking to see how quickly the ex-girlfriend turned to name-calling. Calling someone a “deadbeat dad” over a cat is a very big jump. It feels like the kindness of the original gesture was taken for granted. Setting boundaries can be really tough, but sometimes it is the only way to move forward with your own life.

Expert Opinion

When a couple breaks up, pets often become the center of a “custody” battle that is both emotional and legally confusing. In most places, pets are actually considered “personal property” rather than family members in the eyes of the law. This means that once a pet is given to one person, the other person’s financial responsibility usually ends.

A report from Psych Central discusses how “pet parenting” can mimic the emotional bonds of human parenting. This is likely why the Redditor felt a moral obligation to keep paying. It feels like you are caring for a child, even if the law says otherwise. However, experts warn that continuing to pay for an ex’s lifestyle or pets can keep you tethered to a toxic situation.

Dr. Amy Blackstone, a sociologist, notes that “shared pet ownership can be a way to maintain a connection to an ex that might be better off severed.” In this case, the “cat support” became a bridge that the ex-girlfriend used to cross into the Redditor’s private life.

According to research on VeryWellMind, financial boundaries are essential for emotional healing after a breakup. When money is involved, power dynamics often follow. By demanding money for vet bills after a move, the ex was essentially asking for a blank check for her own choices.

The threat to take back a gift like a laptop is also a major red flag. Legally, a gift belongs to the person who received it. Attempting to “reclaim” it is often a sign of someone trying to exert control. It is important to remember that you can love an animal deeply without being responsible for its bills forever.

Community Opinions

The internet had a lot to say about this situation, with many people pointing out how rare the term “cat support” actually is.

The Legal Reality: Most readers reminded the OP that pets are legally considered property and she has no obligation to pay.

cyfermax − NTA. Pets are property, you're not responsible for the bills for a pet you're not in posession of.

Previously choosing to pay associated costs was a nice thing to do, but you're absolutely not obligated... Stealing property IS morally wrong though...

dianerrbanana − NTA- this is why I side eye people who overly coddle their pets. Can't trust those kinds of people.

Legally cats are considered property so if they can't afford to maintain them they should of thought about that...

LukeS5MD − Cat support... A cat would literally eat you if you were suddenly shrunk to toy size.

Cats are property, and evidently her property now. You have no obligation to them.

The Audacity Factor: Users were shocked by the name-calling and the threats of theft regarding the laptop.

no_rxn − Her: keep giving me money for pets that are not yours... OP: no, that unreasonable.

Her: you're a dead beat dad and I'm going to steal from you then! Lol like I can't with some people.

percival_fanning − NTA. The fact that you sent any money at all ever, was above and beyond.

You are not a deadbeat, you are an amazingly generous person. There is no such thing as cat support...

bobi2393 − NTA, and get a restraining order against her. Gifts given to you are your property.

I do think you have some responsibility for the cats' wellbeing, but seeing to it that they have a good home with your ex meets that responsibility...

The Shared Experience: Fellow community members found the situation oddly specific to certain relationship dynamics.

swadney − Not gonna lie, as a lesbian I saw “cat support” and immediately knew this was a wlw couple. Oh also, NTA.

grubbinx − As a lesbian, this is one of the most lesbian things I’ve read. As a fellow cat mom, I’m so sorry you can’t be in their lives anymore.

NTA. Y’all agreed that she will take the cats and that’s that.

Cats-and-Chaos − NTA. The cats aren’t your children, they’re her property. If she can’t afford their care she needs to rehome them with someone who can.

bexannh − NTA. What you were doing was extremely generous in the first place.

In my mind, once she took ownership of them, she assumed complete responsibility for them...

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

Dealing with a pet breakup requires a very clear head and a bit of a tough heart. It is best to decide on “ownership” immediately when the relationship ends. If you are the one leaving the pets behind, it is often helpful to have a clean break. This includes finishing any final payments for current bills and then closing that financial door.

If an ex-partner begins to use the pets as a way to ask for money, it is okay to say no. You can express your love for the animals while also explaining that you are no longer in a position to fund their care. If threats of theft occur, like the situation with the laptop, it is a good idea to document everything. Keeping your peace of mind is just as important as being a “good” former pet owner.

Conclusion

This story is a quirky but very real look at how modern relationships are changing. While cats are certainly part of the family, they shouldn’t be used as a way to keep an ex-partner on the hook. It sounds like the Redditor is finally taking her power back and focusing on her own family needs.

What do you think about “cat support”? Is it a sweet way to stay involved, or is it just asking for trouble? How would you handle an ex who threatened to take back your gifts? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
