“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in the US one year ago today – and I’m sitting here teary-eyed thinking about it.What a wonderful journey with wonderful people. We had each other’s backs and always will. And although, like the Guardians, some of us have gone our separate ways, the love is still there and we’re still family. Miss you all and love each of you so much it hurts,” Gunn wrote.
While Gunn has passed the Marvel torch and is now fully focusing on developing Superman and other DCU projects, the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU remains promising. Gunn expressed support and “gave his blessings” for the franchise to continue under with a new director at the helm, and has complete faith in Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, to choose a worthy successor to lead a potential fourth installment.
“Kevin [Feige] and I are on great terms. Although a few characters aren’t coming back, I’d love for GotG to continue with the current members+ and I’d trust Kevin to pick the right person for that,” the director described his relationship with the Marvel head post-MCU.
During his time in Marvel, Gunn directed the entire Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Under his helm, the trilogy was a huge box-office success, turning a lesser-known team in Marvel Comics into one of the most popular characters in the entire MCU. The franchise also launched actors like Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana to stardom with an immense surge of popularity.
