DC Universe’s co-head James Gunn has shared an exciting update on the progress of the new Superman movie. The film, which began production in Norway earlier this year, is now a bit over halfway through its shooting schedule.
Gunn, who frequently engages with fans and quashes rumors on social media, disclosed this detail in response to a fan’s inquiry about the movie’s trailer on his Threads or Instagram account.
“We’re only a little over halfway through shooting,” said Gunn, after a fan asked about the trailer of Superman. This comes as positive news for DC fans, as it seems that the filming for Superman is still on schedule, and will be ready for its July 11, 2025 release date.
Just recently, Gunn kept his followers in the loop with a sneak peek at John Cena donning the iconic helmet of Christopher Smith for Peacemaker Season 2, signaling the start of its production. Not long before that, he treated fans to the first glimpse of David Corenswet donning the iconic Man of Steel suit as well.

Adding to the buzz, Gunn announced that Frank Grillo would take on the role of Rick Flag Sr. in the second season of Peacemaker. Grillo, a familiar face in superhero films known for his role as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will also voice the character Rick Flag Sr. in the forthcoming animated series Creature Commandos.
This crossover between voice acting in animation and performing in live-action is something Gunn previously hinted at in the rebooted DC universe.
In 2023, Gunn, along with Peter Safran, took the reins of DC Studios, signaling a new era for the franchise formerly known as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The DCU retains some DCEU cast members such as John Cena, Xolo Maridueña, and Viola Davis, while replacing others, like Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Ezra Miller.
Under Gunn’s leadership, the DCU aims for a cohesive narrative that spans live-action, animation, and video games—a unified approach akin to that of Marvel’s Kevin Feige, but with Gunn also directly involved in directing and overseeing creative aspects of the projects.
There are numerous projects on the slate for the DCU, such as Creature Commandos, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Batman: The Brave and The Bold, but Gunn is currently focusing everything on Superman.
The new Superman movie, initially dubbed Superman: Legacy, will revisit some of the character’s greatest values in the past. The cast consists of David Corenswet as Kal-El, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Isabella Merc as Hawkgirl, and many more.
