One of the most prominent directors of the old DCEU, Zack Snyder, recently shared his support for the revamped DC Universe (DCU) made by James Gunn and Peter Safran. And of course, his enthusiasm for the new franchise didn’t go unnoticed.
As the newly appointed co-heads of DC alongside Peter Safran, Gunn and his team are steering the franchise into a new era, beginning with the upcoming 2025 Superman movie with David Corenswet nailing the main role.
Amidst this transition, Zack Snyder, known for his foundational work on the DCEU, has expressed his enthusiasm for what’s next for DC.
“You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited,” Snyder shared his thoughts in an interview with CBR.
In a conversation on Threads, Gunn responded to a user’s curiosity about Snyder’s take on the new DCU. He revealed that Snyder has been in touch via messages, offering considerable support for the development of the new universe.
“I didn’t but I knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process,” Gunn noted, indicating a positive rapport between the past and present DC filmmakers.
Zack Snyder’s influence on DC films includes directing major titles such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, and his own cut of Justice League. Snyder had originally set out to helm Justice League, but stepped back following the tragic passing of his daughter, leading to Joss Whedon completing the film. The release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” came after a vocal fan campaign, filled with additional scenes and extended cuts.
Recently, Snyder directed the eagerly-awaited Rebel Moon sequel, which received mixed reviews within the Star Wars community.
Gunn and Safran face the enormous challenge of molding a coherent and engaging DCU, with their efforts kicking off with Superman. This project begins “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” which plans to unfold new narratives around Superman, The Authority, Swamp Thing, Booster Gold, Supergirl, the Amazons, and a host of other iconic characters.
Given Snyder’s deep experience and past leadership through films like the cult-classic Watchmen and several DCEU entries, his support not only boosts Gunn and Safran’s credibility, but also opens up possibilities for his future involvement with the DCU. Only time will tell if Snyder will return to the DCU or not, but if it happens, DC fans will surely welcome him with open arms.
