‘Let Me The F— In!’: Trainee’s Perfect Malicious Compliance Enrages Sergeant

Anyone who’s been through military basic training knows it’s a world of intense pressure, sleep deprivation, and relentless mind games. One Air National Guard veteran shared a story on Reddit that perfectly captures the beautiful, chaotic dance of following orders to the letter, even when a furious sergeant is threatening to bury you with a flagpole up your rear.

It’s a tale of a simple, messed-up headcount that escalated into a legendary standoff at a dormitory door. And it’s one of the most satisfying stories of malicious compliance you will ever read.

This trainee was told to follow the rules, no matter what. He did exactly that:

Not the actual photo

Sir, may I see your authority to enter?

Many years ago I had succumbed to a patriotic fever and enlisted in the Air National Guard.

One of the first bits of training they try to hammer into your skull is the importance of the Dorm Guard (DG). DG is responsible for controlling who has access...

It is a very easy job but trainees regularly mess it up because they can't think straight in a military training environment.

If someone knocks on the door the DG has to verify their ID against a list. No ID? No entry.

There are only two exceptions. If the person requesting entry has a key and uses the key in the lock. Or the person requesting entry can use a known code...

To quote my MTL (Military Training Leader) "If Osama bin Laden shows up to the door armed with an RPG

and wrapped head to toe in dynamite and he gives you the code word, let the man in and stay out of his way."

Everyone will do DG duty and you should expect to be tested. They will yell and threaten, try to trick you, and beat on the door mercilessly, but the protocol...

It's the middle of the night and I'm on duty. I do a head count. 51 people present, 50 people assigned. I recount, 51/50, and call it in to the...

Me: Sir... Headcount, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for. // MTL: "WHAT WAS THAT HEADCOUNT AGAIN?".

ME: Sir, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for. // MTL: WRONG. COUNT THEM AGAIN.

I recount and report.. "Sir, 50 assigned, 51 accounted for." // SO HELP ME TRAINEE IF I HAVE TO COME UP THERE I WILL CHOKE YOU TO DEATH WITH YOUR...

"One sir, Two sir... Fifty sir... Fifty one sir." // GODAMNIT! ONEOFYOUUSELESSF---SISGOINGTODIETONIGHT! I'M COMING UP THERE!

The dorm is a 2 minute walk from CQ. He was there in about 9 seconds banging on the door. But, being as mad as he was, he stormed over...

Banging on the door. OPEN UP! // "Sir, may I see your authority to enter?"

I JUST GOT OFF THE COM WITH YOU LET ME THE F--- IN! // "Sir, without valid ID I am forced to refer you to CQ for authorization."

ARE YOU F---ING SHITTING ME? I AM THE CQ! OPEN THE F---ING DOOR! // "Sir, without valid ID I cannot allow you access to the dorm."

By now the other trainees are nervous. I stick to the program and we go back and forth like this.

All my replies are literally written on the back of the door so I keep reading them to him, which only makes him madder and madder.

By now it's been 20 minutes and he's used up every threat and insult at his disposal and is forced to stop and think. He remembers the code word.

CODE WORD // I opened the door immediately. He bolts passed me and begins to count. 51. WHO OF YOU IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE?

It's a guy we don't recognize. It turns out this kid had graduated the day before but needed to be warehoused for a few weeks.

He was supposed to be there, but since he wasn't on our roster, he was not included in the headcount.

Promises of extreme punishment were issued and we were told that the morning would be terrible for all of us, especially me.

At 0530 I was called on the carpet to explain why I refused to allow the Sgt to perform his duties.

I stated plainly and simply that there were protocols and procedures in place for me to follow.

I had been told never to deviate and that I would be tested. I had performed my duties to the best of my abilities.

They could find no fault with this and I was never punished. My MTL later quietly congratulated me for sticking to the protocol.

You can practically feel the tension in that dorm room, can’t you? With every calm, protocol-driven response, you can just imagine the sergeant on the other side of the door getting redder and redder. This story is a masterclass in staying cool under pressure.

The beauty of the situation is its perfect, inescapable logic. The trainee wasn’t being disobedient; he was being the most obedient. He was following the rules so perfectly that the sergeant, in his rage-fueled haste, had trapped himself. It’s a moment of pure, delicious irony that could only happen in the rigid, rule-bound world of the military.

The Method Behind the Military Madness

To an outsider, the whole scenario might seem like a ridiculous power trip. But as the OP and many other veterans in the comments point out, there’s a deep, crucial lesson buried under all the yelling and absurdity.

Basic training isn’t just about learning how to march and shoot. It’s about deconstructing a civilian mindset and rebuilding it with a foundation of discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to follow orders under extreme stress. As a military publication from the U.S. Department of Defense explains, the high-stress environment is designed to simulate the pressures of a real-world operational environment. The goal is to train service members to rely on their training and protocol, not their emotions, when things get chaotic.

The Dorm Guard duty is a classic test of this principle. The rules are simple, but the pressure to break them is immense. The trainee in this story demonstrated that he had learned the core lesson: when everything is going to hell, you don’t panic. You follow the procedure. His ability to calmly read the rules off the back of the door while being threatened with a flagpole enema is a testament to the fact that the training, as insane as it seems, actually works.

Here’s what the community of readers had to say:

The overwhelming response was a mix of laughter, respect, and shared stories of similar military absurdity.

Phekka - Thoroughly enjoyed, thank you.

dragonjz - Ah, the feeling when you know you are 100% in the right and untouchable

Bloter6 - You write well, and this was fun to read. If you have any similar stories, please consider posting them!

MoneyTreeFiddy - CQ KNOWS ONE SIMPLE WORD TO GET IN! Dorm guards hate him!

Many veterans chimed in with their own tales of malicious compliance and by-the-book moments that drove their superiors crazy.

SeanBZA - Guy I was with pulled main gate guard duty. Come morning, at 05H50 the RSM drives up to the gate... calmly asks for ID.

This was the morning the RSM had left his Military ID at home, and after 5 minutes of yelling, and having a rifle levelled at him, he reversed, and drove...

monkeywelder - You would think the Father of Naval Nuclear Power would be on every single access list for every nuclear powered vessel in the US Navy.

But he wasnt. The watch was dressed down for pointing a shotgun at what was considered to most powerful and feared person in the pentagon.

But the old man, sincerely apologized for violating a protocol he developed.

evilbrent - he says it wasn't until about 5 minutes later, when he was walking away,

that he realised he just totally yelled at two officers and threatened to shoot one of them. Nothing ever came of it, but he was shitting himself.

And of course, everyone loved the TL;DR, which was a perfect final act of defiance.

wisc_lib - Upvote for the tl;dr

rawketscience - Tl;Dr: Fix your attention span and learn to read a page or two of text...

Well, since you were nice enough to use paragraph breaks and appropriate punctuation, I guess I'll make an exception just this once.

How to Handle a Situation Like This (In the Civilian World)

While most of us will never have to deny entry to a furious drill sergeant, the core lesson of this story applies to almost any high-pressure situation.

When you’re faced with a conflict where someone is trying to use intimidation or emotional pressure to get you to bend the rules, the safest place to be is on the side of established policy.

Stay calm and stick to the facts. The OP didn’t argue or get emotional. He just calmly repeated the written procedure. This de-escalates your own involvement and makes the other person’s anger the central problem.

Know that you are in the right. The OP’s confidence came from knowing he was following his orders perfectly. If you are standing on a solid foundation of rules and procedures, it’s much harder for someone to knock you off balance.

In The End…

This wasn’t just a story about a trainee outsmarting his sergeant. It was a story about a man who understood the assignment completely. He proved that he could keep his head, follow protocol, and perform his duty, even when faced with a simulated threat. The fact that the threat was his own enraged superior just makes the victory that much sweeter.

What do you think? Is this the ultimate story of military malicious compliance? Have you ever had to stick to the rules in the face of an angry boss?
