This Redditor’s advice is basically a middle finger to heartbreak but in the healthiest way possible.

They started small: scarfing down a double cheeseburger at a dive joint while thinking of their health-nut ex, then signing up for a salsa class the ex would’ve mocked mercilessly. Even a solo drive to a random town gave a sense of freedom long forgotten. Suddenly, it wasn’t just surviving the breakup, it was living again.

Here’s the thing: even in good relationships, compromises happen. You skip horror movies because they hate jump scares. You ditch camping because “nature’s overrated.”

But after a breakup, those compromises can leave you feeling like a stranger in your own skin. Dr. Guy Winch, psychologist and author of How to Fix a Broken Heart, says, “New experiences post-breakup help rebuild your identity outside the relationship.”

A 2022 Journal of Positive Psychology study backs this: 78% of people who tried new activities after a split felt more confident within months.

Reddit is full of these wins. One user went alone to the Louisiana coast in winter and cried, but felt freer than ever. Another chopped their hair after their ex explicitly said “don’t.”

Even grief, like a Redditor losing their spouse, eased with small acts, like buying snacks the spouse couldn’t eat. The point? It’s not about erasing the past, it’s about proving you’re still yourself.

Want to start? Grab a notebook, list 10 things your ex vetoed, and pick one. Maybe it’s a dive bar, a new hobby, blasting that obnoxious band, or even a solo weekend trip.

Don’t stress about big gestures like moving abroad (props to the Redditor who did, just act. What’s been holding you back from that one thing you’ve always wanted to try?

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

Redditors shared personal experiences about coping with breakups and loss, emphasizing the importance of self-care and small personal rituals.

Many highlighted that setting boundaries in new relationships and treating oneself kindly.

This LPT is basically an espresso shot for your soul: do the stuff your ex hated and watch yourself come alive. Whether it’s a solo road trip, a bold haircut, or just eating what you want, Redditors prove it’s all about reclaiming freedom.

So, what’s one thing your ex would’ve vetoed that you’re dying to try? Karaoke night? A spontaneous getaway? Spill your plans below, let’s get that spark back.
