Man Asks Friends For An Extra Pizza, But Their Comments About His Appetite Change Everything

by Layla Bui

in Social Issues

Food can seem like a small issue among friends, but it can become awkward when different people have very different appetites and expectations.

The original poster says that during movie nights with friends, the group usually orders one pizza for everyone, but she often leaves feeling hungry.

She explains that she naturally eats more than the others and has even received comments from friends about how much she orders. Since the host usually pays for the food, she feels uncomfortable asking someone else to buy an extra pizza just for her.

A person wonders if it is unfair to ask friends to order an extra pizza after regularly feeling hungry at group gatherings

'WIBTA for asking my friends to order an extra pizza just for me?'

So, often times when me and my friends get together (usually for a movie night or similar) we'll order a pizza from either Little Caesars or Domino's.

We all agree on the type of pizza because we're all a fan of classic pepperoni.

The problem with this, though, is that I never think they order enough.

In a group of 4 of us, they'd normally order just one pizza and maybe some bread sticks.

Any time I suggest that they order more sides, or just more in general they tend to just ignore me or say that one is definitely enough.

In the past they've all commented on how they think I eat too much in general.

(Not necessarily in regards to pizza because we all split it evenly and get 2 slices each.)

Like, when we go to restaurants together they'll usually say something about how they think I order way too much, even though I ALWAYS finish it all.

For reference, if I'm ordering for myself, I will eat an entire large Little Caesars pizza.

So whenever they get a single pizza for everyone I end up feeling hungry for the night.

I'm not overweight or like a huge glutton, heck I weigh like 140lbs at 5'11, so I really am just eating enough to sustain myself.

Whoever is hosting the movie night (or other similar event) pays for the pizza, and we rotate hosts pretty evenly.

(That's not flexible, they're all pretty stubborn about the host paying so I can't just offer to pay for my share).

So part of me thinks that it isn't fair for me to ask one of my friends to order a whole extra pizza just because I eat a lot more...

My question is, WIBTA if I started asking them to order an extra pizza just for myself?

They've all already expressed that they think I eat too much, so I don't really want to make them uncomfortable,

and if I'm not hosting I would be making someone pay for a pizza that only I eat.

When people gather around food, the meal often becomes about more than hunger. It becomes a quiet reflection of belonging, consideration, and whether everyone feels seen. In this situation, the OP is not only wondering about pizza; they are trying to balance their own needs with the feelings and expectations of their friends.

The discomfort comes from a conflict between wanting enough food to enjoy the evening and not wanting others to feel burdened by their appetite.

The core issue is not simply that the OP eats more than the group. The emotional tension comes from feeling judged. Their friends’ repeated comments about ordering too much may have made the OP more self-conscious, even though they are describing a normal physical need rather than intentional overindulgence.

At the same time, the friends may view the gathering differently. They may see pizza night as a shared snack rather than a full meal, meaning their idea of “enough” is based on the group’s average appetite, not one person’s individual needs.

A different perspective is that the OP’s hesitation shows awareness, not selfishness. Many people in social situations adjust themselves to avoid standing out, especially around food. Research in psychology suggests that people often modify their eating behavior because they fear social judgment or appearing excessive.

The OP may not only be hungry; they may also be carrying the emotional weight of being labeled as “the person who eats too much.” Meanwhile, the friends might not realize their comments have shifted the conversation from food preferences into personal criticism.

Psychologist and author Susan Albers, known for her work on mindful eating, explains that people’s relationships with food are influenced by emotions, social environments, and the way others respond to their eating habits.

She emphasizes that eating needs vary from person to person and that shame or criticism around food choices can create unnecessary stress.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s situation feels more complicated than simply ordering another pizza. The solution is not about proving who is right about the amount of food.

It is about recognizing that different people have different appetites, and a shared meal does not always mean everyone consumes the same amount. The friends may be trying to avoid waste or extra costs, while the OP is trying to avoid feeling uncomfortable or hungry.

A practical solution could be finding a middle ground that protects everyone’s comfort. The OP could bring their own extra food when attending, suggest a shared rule where everyone contributes based on what they eat, or ask whether the group prefers ordering more food rather than assuming one pizza works for everyone.

Food should be part of friendship, not a source of embarrassment. The bigger question is not who eats more, but whether everyone at the table feels respected.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters believed OP should eat beforehand or buy extra food personally

stickbugszz − YWBTA. You can not make them buy an entire pizza for you. Why do you not just buy an extra pizza for yourself each time?

Able-Pineapple-1137 − Just eat before you go? An entire pizza just for you is excessive. YTA.

cofffeegrrrl − Eat a full meal before you go. Treat the pizza as a snack and get more food on your way home.

Happy-Web7744 − While I agree that 1 large pizza and side isn’t enough for 5 people,

one little ceasers pizza is too much for one person unless you’re a teenager. Eat before you go

These users suggested everyone should pay for their own preferred amount of food

AvailableWhereas8832 − This set up is stupid. when my friends and I got pizza, everyone paid for how much they wanted.

Half the guys would pay for their own whole pizza, the rest of us would split costs.

Hosts could be in charge of snacks, but the meals need to be everyone brings what they want/orders what they want on their own tab.

You can also eat before or on your way.

YWBTA for asking people to foot the bill for your whole pizza, but they suck for being so stubborn that you can't pay for your own or come to a...

heyfriendss − Stop justifying the system you guys came up with in the comments and just buy/pay for your own pizza.

This is a really mundane thing to get worked up about.

It doesn’t matter what the system is. You are an adult and make your own choices. Just buy it yourself.

thatsharkbear_17 − NTA if you're the one paying for the extra pizza

These users focused on the friends’ attitudes and whether the food situation was handled respectfully

ecosynchronous − This could never happen to me because I wouldn't hang out with people who criticize my eating habits on a regular basis.

Brave_Quality_4135 − I think your friends are very rude. If someone told me they left my house hungry, I’d be horrifically embarrassed.

You feed your guests and should have leftovers. NTA. I’d probably bring snacks to every party until they start ordering more.

This commenter questioned OP’s food-related behavior and whether the situation was exaggerated

oilspill555 − Has anyone scoped the OP's comment history?

They made this rather bizarre post yesterday, indicating they have some unusual and disordered thought processes surrounding food,

especially when it involves eating with other people:

https://old. reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1v4uhba/is_it_normal_that_i_get_upset_when_people_mix/

"So, when I'm cooking for people, and I prepare a meal with a main and sides,

whenever someone eating it mixes the sides with eachother, or the sides and the main, it makes me upset. "

OP apparently ALSO seems to be very active in subreddits about calorie counting and protein snacks.

Anyone who is counting calories or monitoring their macros would be WELL AWARE that an entire fast-food pizza has over 2000 calories

of purely carbs, sugar, and fat with little other nutritional value.

Eating this in one sitting cannot be described as anything other than gluttonous unless maybe if you've just completed several hours of vigorous exercise.

This post maaaaybe would make sense if OP were truly a clueless underweight teenage boy who doesn't care about nutrition

and just thinks you have to eat "till you are full" every time you eat, and is confused why their friends don't let them do that.

This post makes NO sense coming from someone who is actively monitoring their calories and protein intake.

So either OP has some kind of very bizarre and divergent psychological hangups around food in general, or this is a complete shitpost.

Should the group abandon its host-pays tradition, or should the poster simply eat before arriving? Are two slices enough hospitality for a movie night? Drop the hottest pizza takes below.
