Man Babysits His Sister’s Kids for Weeks, Then Learns Her “Overtime” Was Actually a Luxury Spa Day

Helping family with childcare is something many people are happy to do, especially when they believe they are stepping in during a genuine emergency. But that generosity can quickly disappear if the truth turns out to be very different.

That is the situation facing this Redditor, who spent every Saturday for two months caring for his sister’s young children because she claimed she was working overtime. Everything changed when he stumbled across a social media post showing her relaxing at a luxury spa instead of sitting behind a desk.

When he confronted her, her reaction left him wondering whether he had been helping a struggling parent or simply providing free childcare. Scroll down to see what happened.

A man refuses to babysit again after discovering his sister lied about working weekends

'Am I wrong for refusing to babysit my sister's kids after finding out her "overtime" was actually a spa day?'

My sister has been dumping her two kids (4 and 6) on me every single Saturday for the last two months.

Her excuse was always the same: her accouting firm is understaffed and she needs to grind through the weekend to hit her targets.

Since I work from home and don't have kids of my own, I figured I’d help out.

I didn't mind it at first, but it is basically a full-time unpaid shift watching two toddlers who think my living room is an MMA ring.

Last weekend, I was scrolling through IG while the kids were finally napping and saw a story from one of her friends.

My sister was tagged in a video at a luxury spa resort about an hour away, sipping mimosas by the pool.

This was at 2 PM on a Saturday when she was supposed to be "buried in spreadsheets" at the office. I took a screenshot and sent it to her immediately.

When she came to pick them up, she didn't even look embarrassed.

She just laughed and said she deserved a mental health day and that I shouldn't be so dramatic about it.

I told her that if she can afford a 300 dollar spa day, she can afford a real babysitter. I informed her that I’m busy this coming Saturday and every...

Now our parents are blowing up my phone saying I’m being a bad brother and that "moms need a break."

They think I should just keep doing it because I’m "already at home anyway."

I told them if they feel so bad for her, they can watch the kids themselves. I am probaly done being the family's free labor source.

Helping family feels rewarding when it comes from honesty and mutual respect. What often causes the deepest hurt is not the favor itself but discovering that generosity was built on a false story.

Most people are willing to sacrifice time for someone they love when they believe the need is genuine. Finding out that trust was manipulated can make even the smallest request feel completely different.

In this situation, the brother did not refuse to help because his sister wanted a break. In fact, he had already spent two months giving up nearly every Saturday because he believed she was working overtime to support her family. The discovery that those weekends were actually spa days changed the emotional context entirely.

Parents absolutely deserve opportunities to rest and recharge, especially when raising young children is exhausting. The problem was never the desire for self-care.

It was that she chose deception instead of simply asking, “Would you be willing to watch the kids while I take a day for myself?” By removing his ability to make an informed choice, she also removed the trust that made his generosity possible.

A different perspective is that this conflict reflects the difference between requesting help and assuming entitlement. Many caregivers struggle with guilt when asking for personal time because society often tells parents that every free moment should belong to their children. Her lie may have been an attempt to avoid judgment for wanting a break.

Even so, dishonesty rarely protects relationships. Ironically, the brother may have agreed to babysit had she been truthful from the beginning. Instead, he now questions whether future requests are genuine because the issue has shifted from childcare to credibility.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula explains that trust depends on consistency between words and actions. When someone repeatedly relies on deception to obtain cooperation, the resulting damage often extends beyond the original lie because people begin questioning the reliability of future interactions.

Similarly, researcher and author Dr. Brené Brown describes trust as something built through small, everyday acts of honesty, reliability, and accountability. When people assume access to another person’s time without respecting their autonomy, resentment naturally follows.

These insights help explain why the brother’s reaction is not simply about one afternoon at a spa. The emotional injury came from realizing that weeks of unpaid childcare were secured through a story that turned out to be untrue.

His sister’s response afterward, laughing and dismissing his concerns instead of acknowledging the deception, likely made rebuilding trust even more difficult.

Setting a boundary is not the same as refusing to support family. Boundaries define the conditions under which support can continue in a healthy way. If the sister genuinely needs occasional childcare and asks honestly, that conversation may look very different in the future.

Until then, choosing not to volunteer every Saturday is less about punishing her for wanting rest and more about protecting a relationship that can only function if honesty remains part of the exchange.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors said the real issue was the sister lying and volunteering OP’s time without consent

Needelz − I’m sure if your sister came to you and said life is really rough right now can you watch my kids for three hours while I take a...

You probably wouldn’t say no. You’re completely NTA on this one. She lied straight to your face.

ReiNyra- − The problem isn't that she needed a break, it's that she lied to get one and volunteered your weekends without your consent

This group stressed that childcare is the parents’ responsibility, not OP’s

imf4rds − NTA she chose to be a parent. It’s a hard job but it’s only her responsibility.

She can get a babysitter or your parents can help her. You have a life as well. Don’t back down. Where is their dad?

Stunning-Field2011 − “Mums need a break” - where’s the father in all of this? Why can’t your parents have them?

Ggeunther − You are not wrong. They are not your children. They are HER children.

Parenting 8s a full time job, not a temp. Hold your head up, and stand your ground!

These commenters criticized the parents for dismissing remote work and suggested they babysit instead

4Serpent_Eye − Your parents saying you should do it because you are already at home anyway is infuriating.

Working from home is still working, and your weekends are meant for rest, not unpaid childcare shifts.

Old_Leadership_5000 − And your parents just volunteered their Saturdays for grandma/grandpa time in perpetuity.

This Redditor questioned whether the parents knew the sister had lied

Jwhacks − Do your parents know she lied to you?

Most readers felt the disagreement wasn’t about whether parents deserve a break. They do. The real conflict began when one family member removed another person’s ability to choose by hiding the truth.

Helping out because someone asks honestly is an act of generosity. Being misled into becoming a regular, unpaid babysitter is something entirely different. Many believed that once trust was broken, the brother had every right to set a boundary and stick to it.
