Man Cuts Contact After Date Makes One Comment About “Cross Contamination” That Leaves Him Seriously Uncomfortable

Dating often means discovering little things about another person that you did not expect.

Sometimes those differences are harmless quirks, while other times a single comment can completely change the way you see someone.

Even when there is already some chemistry, certain attitudes can make it difficult to imagine taking the relationship any further.

That is what happened to one man after reconnecting with a woman he had previously decided to stop seeing.

'AIO: Cut contact with this girl after this conversation…?'

So. I (42m) went out with this girl (33f) who is a very minor celebrity if you can call being on a reality show a decade ago a celebrity 🤷.

Don’t ask what show I’m not going to say. Anyways we had a few dates and something she said turned me off so I stopped talking to her for a...

She argued that sunblock lotion was gonna give you cancer. Whatever. Not a big deal, she was moving away for a bit anyways.

Well, she came back to my state and hit me up again. I decided that it wasn’t a big deal and said s__ew it. So we went out on a...

She tends to frequent that place. Really into Mexican food idk. We went and the waiter who waited on us came off as very effeminate.

Caught him checking me out a couple times. I went and played the crane machine, almost got a prize but it fell short. He ran over and gave me a...

Could he just be hunting for a good tip? Maybe, but I kinda got a vibe…Anyways. A couple days later she was there again and asked me to join her...

That’s when this convo happened and idk it kinda gave me the ick. Like it’s fine if that’s your deal, but I feel like she coulda just said I only...

But to use terms like cross contamination. What the effff…

Sometimes a dating conversation can reveal far more about a person’s worldview than an entire first date. In this case, the OP’s discomfort appears to have come not from discovering that the woman had preferences, but from the language she allegedly used to explain them.

The OP had already noticed some differences in worldview, including her belief that sunscreen causes cancer, but initially treated those disagreements as quirks rather than deal-breakers.

After reconnecting and going on several more dates, however, a conversation involving a waiter at a Mexican restaurant reportedly changed the atmosphere.

The OP interpreted the woman’s comments as suggesting that she would only date within a particular racial group, but what particularly bothered him was her use of the phrase “cross contamination.”

Without the full conversation, it is impossible to know precisely what she meant or whether the wording was reported in complete context.

Even so, describing interracial contact using the language of contamination understandably carries a very different emotional weight from simply saying, “I only date people of my race.”

Preferences in romantic attraction are not unusual. Research on online dating has repeatedly found racial patterns in whom people express interest in, and researchers have documented racial hierarchies in perceived desirability.

One study examining online dating behavior found that race and ethnicity influenced partner preferences alongside other characteristics, demonstrating that attraction is shaped partly by social patterns rather than existing entirely outside cultural influence.

At the same time, the existence of racial preferences does not automatically make every expression of those preferences harmless. The distinction is between describing personal compatibility and assigning negative meaning to an entire racial group.

The American Psychological Association describes racial microaggressions as everyday verbal or behavioral indignities that communicate derogatory attitudes toward people because of their identity; importantly, they can be intentional or unintentional.

If the OP understood the woman’s “cross contamination” language as suggesting that people of another race were somehow undesirable or contaminating, his reaction may therefore have been less about rejection and more about what the terminology appeared to imply.

Psychologist Dr. Derald Wing Sue, one of the leading researchers on racial microaggressions, has emphasized that prejudice can operate in subtle ways rather than only through explicit slurs or openly hostile behavior.

In an interview with the APA, Sue said, “No one is immune from inheriting racial, gender and sexual orientation biases.” His point is useful here because it suggests that people can reproduce racial assumptions without necessarily thinking of themselves as prejudiced.

The wording someone chooses can reveal assumptions they may never have consciously examined.

The broader social context matters as well because interracial relationships have become increasingly common in the United States.

Pew Research Center reported that 17% of U.S. newlyweds had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity in 2015, more than five times the share recorded in 1967.

More recent Census data similarly show that interracial couples make up a substantial portion of American households.

These relationships have therefore become an increasingly ordinary part of modern dating and family life, even while racial preferences and stereotypes continue to influence attraction.

That does not mean the woman in this story should be labeled racist based on one reported conversation alone.

Her attraction patterns could have personal, cultural, or experiential explanations, and having a preference is different from actively discriminating against someone.

The more useful question is whether her language revealed a broader belief that one racial group is inherently more acceptable—or that another is somehow undesirable on a fundamental level.

For the OP, continuing the relationship would probably require feeling comfortable asking what she actually meant rather than relying entirely on interpretation.

If her explanation revealed an ordinary preference stated poorly, the situation might be very different from discovering deeply prejudicial beliefs.

But choosing to step away is also reasonable if the language crossed a personal line and made the OP question whether their values were compatible.

Ultimately, the OP’s experience illustrates that attraction is personal, but the language used to explain attraction can carry social meaning far beyond dating.

A person is free to decide whom they find appealing, yet potential partners are equally free to decide what attitudes they are unwilling to live with.

In this case, the decisive issue may not have been who the woman wanted to date, but whether the way she described those preferences suggested a worldview the OP could no longer feel comfortable being around.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors roasted the woman for her racist and bizarre comments.

boopbeboop_ − Cross contamination is absolutely insane. NOR.

Alternative-Tree4813 − There’s no question about it. She’s a piece of s__t. And a stupid one at that. Cross contamination? ? Of what? Melanin? 😂 I’ll take some more. I’m...

SaraAnnabelle − Cross contamination? ??? And you're here asking if you're overreacting. Come on.

chikencrumb − bro the confidence in saying something so f__king stupid LMAOO.

These commenters agreed that the situation appeared especially creepy because the woman’s behavior went beyond expressing a dating preference.

Pissedliberalgranny − Ma’am, the waiter was asking about your relationship to OP because he’s hoping OP is single, not because he’s hoping *you* are. Jfc.

casino_night − Having a s__ual preference is one thing. But the touching and cross contamination lines were creepy.

These Redditors backed OP for recognizing the behavior as a serious red flag.

badassrey − nah she’s weird as hell for saying that

TheNB15 − Nope that person was being VERY r__ist.

SkiingFishingGuy − Narcissist and a r__ist? Yeah no thanks.

Sentient_blackhole − That b__ch is a r__ist. Cut contact and maybe leak those screenshots locally. . lol

Sometimes the biggest red flag isn’t the opinion itself, but the way someone chooses to express it. OP already had reservations after hearing his date’s views about sunscreen, but the later conversation apparently pushed things into territory he couldn’t comfortably ignore.

While some readers may feel he was too quick to judge or should have simply asked what she meant, others may understand why certain language can instantly change how you see someone.

Was OP right to walk away after that conversation, or should he have given her a chance to explain herself? Share your take below!
