Man Demanded an ATM Technician Stop Working, Then the Bank Manager Shut Him Down

Some people see a blocked lane and assume everyone else should immediately rearrange their work for convenience. That attitude becomes especially risky when the person they are confronting is following strict security procedures around sensitive equipment.

The original poster (OP) repairs ATMs and had positioned a work van to block access while replacing parts at a drive-up machine. Even though several other ATMs were available nearby, a driver in a large truck demanded that OP stop working, pack everything up, and move so he could pass through.

The situation escalated after the man involved the branch manager and refused to accept the answer he was given. Read on to find out how a routine repair turned into a police report.

An ATM technician faces an angry driver demanding he abandon a secure repair job

'Chad demanded I stop working and move so he could drive up to an atm'

I repair ATMs. I enjoy it, it pays well and I don’t have to deal with a whole lot of people…

but this just happened and I couldn’t help but to think you guys would appreciate it.

I’m at a drive up atm lane that has 2 ATMs, one after the other.

I needed to replace parts, so I parked so that both lanes were blocked so no one could drive up behind me or drive past me (security protocol).

I have the front arm open, parts and tools out, and I’m taking apart a part I have on the ground. I’m clearly in the middle of something.

A guy in a huge jacked up truck, covered with political propaganda and a “f__k your feelings flag” on it pulls up behind my van and just sits.

This happens a lot but a normal person with some common sense will eventually see what’s going on and move. He did not. Instead he honked.

I ignored him as I’m not allowed to walk away from the atm

He eventually gets out and tells me I need to move so he can get to the atm.

I politely tell him I’m repairing this one but he’s welcome to use any of the other 4 on the site, including the one he was standing next you.

He said he didn’t want to use that one and he needed to drive his truck through, so I needed to pack up and move.

I told him I would not and they maybe he should read his own flag.

He got PISSED. Stormed into the bank and came out with the branch manager.

Second the manager saw that it was me working on the atm, he told the man that I did not need to move, the man came towards me again,

and I politely told him that interfering with someone working on an atm is a criminal offense that that he needed to leave the premises.

The manager told him to leave as well.

He called us a couple of faggots, backed up, turned around and drove away like a mad man, but not before i got his license plate.

Police report filed. Hope this didn’t end well for him

EDIT: texted the friend. He’s got a clean record so they only filed it. Kinda anti-climatic but I’m ok with no more drama from it too.

Edit two: I’m required to report incidents. This creates a paper trail should he pop up again

Edit three: after answering a ton of questions, im realizing that this was more an issue with him not being able to get out the parking lot easily than which...

I was blocking the only lane his tank would fit through, so to get out, he had to back up dodging cars and then exit through the entrance.

And while my retort was funny to me, I escalated the situation.

Few things test a person’s patience faster than being ordered to abandon necessary work simply because someone else refuses a minor inconvenience. The technician was not casually occupying the drive-through lane.

He had opened a financial machine, laid out tools and replacement parts, and blocked vehicle access as part of a security procedure. The customer nevertheless treated his preferred route as more important than the work, the rules, and the other ATMs available nearby.

The emotional tension came from a collision between responsibility and entitlement. The technician was required to remain beside an exposed ATM and could not simply pack everything away whenever a driver appeared.

The customer, meanwhile, had arrived in a vehicle that could not easily navigate the alternative exit. Instead of recognizing that limitation as his own problem, he demanded that someone else interrupt a technical repair to accommodate him. When the technician refused, the man apparently experienced the boundary not as ordinary inconvenience but as personal disrespect.

A fresher perspective is that the truck may have mattered psychologically. Large vehicles, political displays, and confrontational slogans do not automatically reveal someone’s personality. Still, the demand to control the lane matched the message on his flag poorly: he advertised indifference toward other people’s feelings while expecting immediate consideration for his own.

The technician’s retort exposed that contradiction, but it also challenged the man’s public identity. For someone already frustrated and embarrassed, that kind of remark can turn a practical dispute into a contest over dominance.

Psychotherapist Steven Stosny explains that psychological entitlement involves believing one deserves special consideration without comparable responsibility toward others. When that expected privilege is denied, an entitled person may feel victimized and believe retaliation is justified.

Guidance from Minnesota’s Office of Collaboration and Dispute Resolution similarly notes that conflict often worsens when people make assumptions, prioritize being right, and lose sight of solving the actual problem.

That framework fits the customer’s escalation. He had several workable alternatives, yet continued pressing because he believed the technician should absorb the inconvenience.

Going inside for a manager may have been an attempt to recruit authority after direct pressure failed. Once the manager upheld the security procedure, the customer responded with a homophobic slur and dangerous driving, revealing that the conflict had moved far beyond access to an ATM.

The technician was right to remain in place, involve management, document the license plate, and file the required report. Creating a record was sensible in case the same person returned.

However, his own update contains useful self-awareness: telling the customer to read his flag was funny, but unnecessary. In security-sensitive work, the safest victory is often a neutral sentence repeated without sarcasm: “The lane is closed during service. Please use another machine or exit.”

The customer created the confrontation. The technician merely discovered that being correct does not always make provocation worth the risk.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors condemned the driver’s selfishness, ignorance, and lack of basic decency

Rowan-The-Writer − Well, this doesn't surprise me any more. ..

The world is turning to shite, and people have lost their common sense, their manners, and any semblance of decency.

Diggist080211 − I hope you’re right and he at least gets a serious fine.

People like this never stop to consider (1) what’s happening and why or (2) the consequences of their selfish behavior.

Maybe a fine will make him use a gray cell or two next time.

RogueGunny − As soon as I saw "jacked up truck" I knew the rest. Definitely a predominately ignorant breed.

These commenters mocked his contradictory behavior and inability to understand how ATMs work

darthbreezy − So he *absolutely had* to use the drive up ATM, but then walked inside the branch to get a manager. ... These people vote (and breathe).

Patient_Anteater2747 − I used to work on atms too. I think people think the money just gets printed right there on the spot when they ask for it.

One atm was out of cash and I was there to refill it. Guy see the armored name on my truck and says "WAIT WAIT can I go before you?!"

I tell him "it's out of money so that's pointless. .." he cuts me off and sticks his card in.

Pin code, doot doot, beep beep, waiting for money.   "Hey. It said it doesn't have sufficient funds to give me. "  Yeah. I know.

mydnyghtrayvyn − I work for a bank. If someone came in and told me they had to use a specific ATM, my radar would be up.

My first question would be “Want to explain why? ”

These users ridiculed his aggressive posturing as fragile rather than masculine

Both-Mango1 − be glad captain "f__k your feelings" didnt pull a piece on you. i do hope he gets a pants wetting talking to from the fuzz.

jonny3jack − Backing his truck up was not masculine.

Kitalahara − It will never cease to amaze me how the "eff your feelings" types are always so fragile.

Unusual-West-5935 − I like that” read your own flag”

Should the technician have remained completely professional, or was one sarcastic response understandable? Was filing the report worthwhile even without charges?
