Man Embarrassed by Girlfriend’s Pokémon Toys, Reddit Tells Him to Grow Up

Dating can be tough, but one 21-year-old Reddit user discovered that the biggest challenge wasn’t communication or commitment—it was Pokémon.

His girlfriend is a mature, loving, and supportive partner, but she has one major flaw, according to him: an undeniable love for Pokémon. This includes playing Pokémon Go and, worst of all, displaying plushies in their shared bedroom.

Instead of defending his girlfriend, the man decided the best solution was to ask how he could convince her to “tone it down,” proving he was more concerned with his immature friends’ opinions than his partner’s happiness.

My(m21) gf(f23) obsession with Pokemon is embarassing me?

So my gf loves pokemon. Sometimes when we go out she will ask me if it's alright if she checks for some pokestops on pokemon go.

When someone we know talks about pokemon my gf gets really excited and want to be friends on pokemon go right away.

She also has many pokemon plushies, all of them in our shared bedroom. At first it was cute, but my friends are starting to make fun of me for dating...

My gf is very mature and an amazing partner but when I brought up how her obsession with Pokemon is embarrassing for her age she felt insulted and told me...

Still my buddies are making fun of us and I'm afraid she will get hurt once she hears them.

What to do? How to convince her she should maybe tone it down a little?

My friends are visiting us and I'm sure they will make fun of her once they will see all of her plushies.

It is extremely difficult to read this post without immediately cringing at the sheer immaturity of the boyfriend. He has explicitly stated his girlfriend is mature and an amazing partner, yet he is willing to sacrifice her happiness and self-expression to placate a group of “buddies” who still associate harmless hobbies with childishness.

The girlfriend’s defense was spot-on. Her liking for Pokémon is functionally identical to his liking for League of Legends and Minecraft. The only difference is the type of judgmental baggage attached to the media.

The real issue here isn’t the Pokémon plushies; it’s the boyfriend’s insecurity. He is prioritizing external validation from immature friends over the comfort and joy of the person he supposedly loves. The fact that he is afraid his girlfriend will get hurt by their mockery, yet his solution is to try and change her, not defend her, speaks volumes about his character.

The boyfriend is falling victim to the widespread double standard regarding gendered hobbies and perceived maturity. While adult men playing competitive video games or building digital worlds are often accepted, women who express enthusiasm for fandoms associated with childhood are often labeled “immature” or “childish.”

Pokémon, in particular, has massive reach, spanning generations. The franchise is a multi-billion dollar empire that appeals to a wide demographic. According to a report by Statista, the Pokémon franchise has generated over $120 billion worldwide, proving its appeal far exceeds a niche children’s market.

This man isn’t embarrassed by the hobby itself; he’s embarrassed by the outdated judgments of his peers.

As clinical psychologist Dr. Ryan Howes notes in a piece for Psychology Today on defending your partner: “In a mature relationship, defending your partner against critics, especially judgmental friends, is non-negotiable. If you fail to do so, you create a dynamic where your partner feels they must perform or hide parts of themselves to meet your friends’ impossible standards. This erodes trust and intimacy.”

The boyfriend’s instinct to tell his girlfriend to “tone it down” is a fundamental breach of trust, forcing her to hide a genuine part of her personality just to make him look “cooler.”

Check out how the community responded:

The overwhelming feedback was brutal, with Redditors unanimously telling the boyfriend to dump his friends and grow up.

procedureszone102 - You need to grow some balls and tell them to shut the [heck] up and stop taking the [crap] out of your girlfriend and her harmless hobby. And...

brighteden - Get some new friends.

Confusedcashew5 - Are you dating your friends? No? Then who cares what they think.

Grow up, your gf isnt a child for being a big Pokemon fan Shes right, how is she childish for Pokemon but you can play minecraft and aint childish?

Users pointed out the hypocrisy of his argument and the fact that his actions reflect poorly on him, not his girlfriend.

jinkimoon - This doesnt sound like an obsession at all. What it does sound like is that youre more worried about what your friends say of you than about the...

Melon-Cola - Pokémon isn't a strange thing to be obsessed about. Who is it that's really making fun of her, your friend or you?

M4Strings - So you're embarrassed by her plushies? I'd be more embarrassed by the fact that what your friends think apparently means more to you than some non-harmful thing that...

Many comments focused on the critical relationship requirement of defending your partner from external criticism.

strawbhaby - Wow. Okay, well first of all if you're friends are going to make fun of your girlfriend and you don't defend her that says a lot about you.

DismalDog7730 - You don't have a girlfriend problem, you have a friends problem.

[Reddit User] - You should embrace her love for Pokémon since it brings her happiness. If your friends make fun of her tell them they can leave.

[Reddit User] - You are a [jerk]. You owe her flowers. Don't like her being herself find someone else bud.

The community’s advice is straightforward: the boyfriend needs to end his friendship with people who mock his girlfriend for a harmless hobby. He must prioritize his amazing partner over his immature peers. If he cannot stand up for her, he risks losing her completely.

What do you think? Should his girlfriend hide her plushies and stop playing Pokémon Go to make her boyfriend feel more mature? Or does the boyfriend need to find better friends?
