Man Ends First Date After Feeling No Connection, But His Date Blames Autism

Rejecting someone after a first date is never easy, especially when you know your decision might hurt their feelings. But there is also a difficult balance between being considerate and pretending a connection exists when it does not.

OP found himself in that position after meeting Shayla through an online dating app. She told him before their date that she was autistic, and OP decided to give the relationship a chance because he had previous experience working with autistic people.

The evening was not a disaster, but OP noticed several things that made him question whether they were compatible. After thinking it over, he decided it would be better to end things early rather than lead her on.

The problem came when Shayla disagreed with his reasoning and believed her autism was the real reason he did not want another date. OP now feels conflicted about whether he was simply recognizing a lack of chemistry or whether he failed to be understanding enough. Scroll down to see the full situation.

not the actual photo

'AITAH I Went on a date with an autistic girl but decided that I didn't want to date her again and she's saying it's because she's autistic. and I might...

So just went out yesterday with a girl I met off POF. Lets call her Shayla.

Shayla lets me know she's got autism but I've worked with autistic people before so I say why not lets give it a try.

All I did was ask if where she wanted to eat and she was pretty quick to say sure.

I was honestly so happy that a woman wanted to actually go out with me even though I don't have a car that I didn't ask to many questions.

So after getting some schedule info I Choose an italian spot with a nice outdoor setting.

she gets there and it's kinda awkward but we try to get some talking done and it's difficult.

Shayla has had some problems dating in the past because well the men in her dms are actually f__king scum.

R__ist, s__ually agressive scum. The whole reason I got the date is because I didn't say something gross or send her a d__k pic.

But it's still difficult to make a connection with her as Im talking to her.

Then i discover she really doesn't want to even be at the italian spot (she only orders fries) because she wants to go to another place downtown.

So after some reasoning I offer to lyft us to the spot.

It's a bar but it's honestly a vibe, but noisy and it's hard to talk to her because she's not a loud talker and she mumbles her words a lot.

She's a regular at this bar too so everyone knows her and I can't help the feeling im being overly watched.

Especially when some guy comes up and says she's his special friend and he's heard i've been a gentlemen.

Don't like that tbh because who tf is this guy checking in on us when I just met her today?

Few drinks and some food later and yeah Im feeling good but I don't feel connected with her.

I just kinda feel like I was just vibing at the bar and she was just around. the night ends and I get us both an uber home. even got...

All in all it wasn't a bad night but I wasn't feeling sparks or any kind of passion to continue seriously but I thought maybe some time will fix that.

So i text her we should do this again some time and I think I'll have sometime to think about it the next day.

Then she starts texting in the morning, simple stuff at first just "good morning" etc.

then she tells me she was dreaming of me in one text but doesn't want to tell me exactly what it was and then she's asking me if I beat...

Im trying to focus on school and she won't stop texting even after I politely explain that Im trying to study.

She keeps texting because she wants to talk so I finally just tell her I'll call her at 8pm.

I really just needed a while to think about how to handle this.

She still text me a few times about how exited she is to talk to me but it finally stops for a few hours.

I wrestle with it and I realize I don't think I want to continue this.

I know she has a disability but there were a few red flags that had nothing to do with autism but I do think the autism was a little much...

So I told her I don't think we should have a second date and she's asking why and im trying to put it into words so I say she's intense.

She kinda yells "what do you mean intense??" and then just says it's because I don't want to date someone autistic.

Maybe that's true but I also didn't want to continue to lead her own. I gave it a try and tried to be into her but I just don't think...

AITAH for breaking this off? I can answer more in depth questions but a part of me feels bad like I did something wrong.

Dating often involves a difficult truth: two people can both be good, kind, and deserving of respect, yet still not be the right match for each other.

Rejection can hurt, especially when someone already feels different or misunderstood, but compatibility is not the same thing as judgment. In this story, the OP was not deciding whether Shayla deserved love. He was deciding whether the connection felt right for him.

The emotional complexity comes from both people bringing different experiences into the situation. Shayla appears to have faced negative treatment from previous men, which may have made her especially sensitive to rejection or abandonment.

The OP, meanwhile, entered the date hoping to be open-minded and give someone a fair chance. He appreciated that she trusted him enough to meet, but after spending time together, he felt the communication style, intensity, and overall dynamic were not something he could comfortably continue.

A different perspective is that the conflict may not actually be about autism itself. Autism is a broad spectrum, and autistic people can have very different personalities, communication styles, and relationship needs. Some of the behaviors described, such as sending many messages, struggling with conversational flow, or missing social cues, may be related to autism.

However, they are also individual traits that some non-autistic people may have as well. The important question is not “Is this because she is autistic?” but “Are these communication patterns something both people can work with?”

Clinical psychologist Dr. Devon MacDermott, who has written about relationships and emotional communication, explains that healthy relationships require both people to feel understood and comfortable expressing their needs.

Differences between partners can work when there is mutual awareness and willingness to adjust, but constant discomfort or unmet needs can create resentment.

The National Autistic Society also explains that autistic people may communicate and interpret social situations differently, meaning successful relationships often benefit from clear communication, patience, and understanding from both sides.

This does not mean the OP should have continued dating out of guilt. Staying with someone because they have a disability is not kindness; it can become unfair to both people. Shayla deserves someone who genuinely enjoys her communication style and personality, not someone forcing himself to stay because he worries about appearing insensitive.

At the same time, the OP’s wording may have unintentionally caused pain. Saying someone is “intense” without explaining what behaviors created that feeling can make a person feel rejected for who they are rather than for a specific mismatch.

A more thoughtful explanation might have focused on compatibility: “I enjoyed meeting you, but I don’t think our communication styles are the right fit.”

The hardest part of dating is accepting that effort does not always create chemistry. The OP tried something outside his comfort zone, treated Shayla respectfully during the date, and made a decision before creating false expectations.

Not every ending is a failure. Sometimes the kindest choice is recognizing that two people need different things before either person becomes more attached.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed the main issue was ignored boundaries and uncomfortable behavior rather than autism itself

Electricfairygina − NTA autism or not, she didn't respect your boundaries when asking for space.

She got defensive when you said you didn't think it was a match and attacked you. That's not someone ready to be in a relationship.

QaplaSuvwl − Breaking what off? You went on one date. It wasn’t a match, you move on.

I don’t think her Autism is the issue based on what you’ve said.

Her asking you if you beat women when you get mad is a bizarre question and would put my antennas up.

Her using her autism as a means to make you feel guilty is b__lshit. NTA.

West_Guarantee284 − Perfectly valid. Her autism manifests in part of her personality and if you don't enjoy her personality then you shouldn't date.

These Redditors agreed that a lack of romantic connection is enough reason to end things after one date

scienceoftophats − NTA you don't like her. At all. Autism or not -- nope

divingrose77101 − You never have to tell someone why you don’t want a second date. Be kind.

Say “I really appreciate the time you gave me. We are not a romantic match. ”

otisandme − NTA her autism likely did play a role in not connecting but hey you didn’t feel a spark. That’s ok

These users shared perspectives from autistic people and emphasized that compatibility matters more than diagnosis

UseUrWords − NTA. I'm a autistic woman (who is probably less affected than your date is).

I'm happiest dating other autistic folks. It's fine that you don't want to go on a second date with her -- you'll both find better matches.

LawyerKangaroo − NTA Autism is a spectrum (you know this), you not enjoying or being able to click with her specific flavour of it is fine.

As someone also on the spectrum, I likely wouldn't be very attracted to this type of person either. You'd be the AH here if you continued dating her.

You're right though, there are some issues here regardless of it being related to autism or not that can be worked on.

coupl4nd − So? If you don't want to date someone who is autistic that's fine. You don't HAVE to date someone you know? You can end it for any reason....

This commenter only focused on the formatting and requested clearer paragraph breaks

ProfessorNoPuede − Please use paragraph breaks.

Do you think the poster handled the situation fairly, or should he have approached the conversation differently? How should people balance honesty with kindness when ending a new connection? Share your thoughts below.
