Man Gets Cleared at Work, Then Learns His Friend Lied About Why He Ghosted Him

Support matters most when someone’s reputation and livelihood are suddenly under pressure. I can understand why being abandoned during that kind of crisis would hurt far more than an ordinary friendship disagreement, especially after years of trust.

A Redditor found himself questioning a 12-year friendship after being suspended from his job while a serious allegation was investigated. His longtime friend worked for the same company and initially reached out with promises of moral support. But during the suspension, invitations for a drink were repeatedly declined until communication stopped altogether.

Months later, once the OP had been cleared and returned to work, the friend contacted him again and claimed his boss had forbidden any contact. Curious, the OP checked that explanation for himself and heard something very different. Keep reading to see why he concluded that the friendship was no longer worth saving.

A man cuts ties with his longtime friend after feeling abandoned during a serious workplace allegation

'AIO - I have cut off my friend of 12 years?'

I, (32M), was suspended from work over an allegation of misconduct with a female ex-colleague.

For the record I’m happily married and spurned the advances of said ex-colleague which lead her to reporting me out of spite.

I knew nothing would come of it, she herself ended up getting fired for lying, once I had proved nothing happened.

My now former friend works for the same company as me but in a different office. I have known him for 12 years since university.

He knew of the allegation through word of mouth and right after my suspension,

he reached out to say he’d have my back in terms of moral support which I was grateful for at the time.

I was suspended with pay for 2 months. In that time I tried texting him and calling him just to see if he fancied a drink.

At first he told me he was busy and eventually stopped messaging me all together.

Once my suspension was lifted, he again found out through word of mouth and messaged me to say

he was happy to hear I was back at work and wanted to meet up.

I told him I felt hurt that he dropped me and he explained that he was instructed by his boss not to talk to me whilst I was suspended.

I have decided to end my friendship with him as I feel completely betrayed.

Thankfully my wife was a fantastic support for me and knew that I would never do anything like

what I had been accused of however I still felt pretty alone at times.

I spoke to his boss, as I knew him quite well and asked why he had instructed him not to talk to me.

He had no idea what I was talking about and said he had no power to make that call.

I personally think he wanted to completely disassociate from me to cover his ass because he believed the allegation.

So, AIO for ending the friendship or would you do the same as him?

The answer probably depends on why he disappeared and whether he is willing to tell the truth now.

First, distancing oneself during an active workplace investigation is not automatically suspicious. ACAS, the UK workplace-relations authority, says confidentiality is an important part of investigations and notes that suspended employees are commonly asked not to discuss the matter with coworkers.

However, its guidance also says speaking with somebody at work for another reason is “usually reasonable,” depending on company policy and circumstances.

ACAS also stresses that suspension can make a worker feel as though they have already been judged and may create significant worry during the investigation. Employers are encouraged to consider the suspended employee’s mental health and support needs. (acas.org.uk)

That makes the friend’s original hesitation easier to understand. Perhaps he feared breaching confidentiality, upsetting management, or becoming associated with a serious allegation before knowing what actually happened. Redditor CakeZealousideal1820 captured that charitable interpretation: he may simply have been protecting his livelihood.

Yet the boss’s alleged denial changes the emotional equation.

The American Psychological Association describes emotional support as an important protective factor during stressful periods, noting research linking stronger social support with greater resilience.

For someone isolated from work for two months, a longtime friend disappearing immediately after promising support could therefore land as something much deeper than a missed drink.

Psychologist Darlene Lancer also writes that trust depends heavily on open communication, explaining that people build distrust when “words and actions don’t match.” That idea feels particularly relevant here. The friend said he would be supportive, behaved otherwise, then offered an explanation the poster believes was false.

Still, Reddit’s more cautious commenters raised a useful possibility: perhaps the boss did recommend distance informally and later forgot, minimized it, or did not consider it an instruction.

Another partner, manager, or colleague could also have pressured the friend. The poster currently has two incompatible stories but not necessarily proof of malicious intent.

For a 12-year friendship, one final direct conversation seems reasonable. Instead of debating whether the friend was “loyal enough,” the poster could ask why he stopped communicating and why he attributed that decision to his boss.

If the friend admits he was frightened and apologizes for lying, there may be something to rebuild. If he keeps changing the story or dismisses the hurt, ending the friendship becomes easier to understand.

The core issue is not whether a friend must blindly defend someone facing allegations. Nobody owes unquestioning loyalty when serious claims are unresolved. But twelve years of friendship arguably deserves candor. Saying, “This situation scares me and I need some distance until work finishes investigating,” would have hurt, but at least it would have been honest.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These users felt a real friend would have been honest and supportive from the start

Puzzleheaded_Tie8113 − Sounds to me like he lied. Not a good friend. Sorry

GellyG42 − He doesn’t sound like a good friend, he was trying to play both sides by blaming the boss.

A true friend would’ve had your back and known your character not ghosted you then popped up once your truth came out

MMDCAENE − I think if he was a legitimate friend, he would’ve said “let’s hold off on communication until everything is straightened out at work. ”

Good_Habit3774 − You did the right thing by dropping him as a friend.

If you can't depend on him to get a drink with you in a time of need, what happens when you have a bigger crisis and need to lean on...

These commenters said the situation revealed the friend’s true character and priorities

Humble-Map-29 − NOR. He is free to make his own decisions and choices regarding any subject.

You also are free to make your own decisions and choices.

A true friend would have been straight with you about this, while a marginal friend would ostracize you like this.

mikemarshvegas − lend someone ten dollars and never see them again. ..consider it ten dollar well spent.

you learned the true colors of this individual. ..ten dollars well spent

These users noted workplace rules or pressure may have influenced the friend’s decision

Educational-Donut-60 − If he heard all of this through word of mouth, that means it was obviously going around the building

and for all you know his boss is lying or maybe someone more personal to him like a wife/partner,

said they’d prefer him to wait out the allegation but he doesn’t want to throw that person under the bus.

For a 12 year old friendship, it’d have to at least be worthy of a conversation or y’all clearly weren’t really ever friends and to his defense

doesn’t sound like you were forthcoming or ever brought up the situation and that would have been really awkward for him and sounds

like he sent an olive branch and offered support and then more was said by someone

and he just wanted to play it safe for the sake of his job or possibly another relationship.

Again at least worth a convo IMO before YOR and cut him off!

ratsrulehell − When people are suspended in my job we actually ARE told we can't have any contact with them.

It could be that the boss said to him that it would be best if he limited contact, but didn't -tell- him not to

These Redditors suggested one honest conversation before deciding whether to end the friendship

Asleep-Hat5213 − I wouldn't end the friendship over this, but I could definitely see why you would.

If it did turn out to be true, it could've made his work life very difficult and that's his bread and butter.

What I would do is meet up with him and call his lie out and see how he reacts.

Be honest about how it made you feel and drag him a little bit for not even wanting to hear about it from you, stick to the truth.

If he's a good friend that just made a mistake he'll apologize, but if he doubles down or gets super defensive you've got your answer.

CakeZealousideal1820 − I see both sides.

He needed to take a step back while the investigation was taking place so he wouldn't get caught in the crossfire.

He was protecting his livelihood. I also understand you're hurt. He shouldn't have lied and just told you the truth.

I think you two need to have a conversation then you can decide whether or not to cut him out of your life.

If you cannot move past this and have already made your decision so be it.

Was ending the friendship justified once the boss contradicted his story, or does a bond that old deserve one final face-to-face conversation? And if the friend simply panicked about protecting his career, would an honest apology change anything? Share the verdict below.
