Man Gets Prank Calls About His Missing Dog, So Now They Can Enjoy The Consequences

When your dog goes missing, the last thing you expect is for someone to prank call you about it. But that’s exactly what happened when a stranger decided to mock the poster’s heart-wrenching situation.

After some barking over the phone, the poster decided to take matters into their own hands. Instead of letting it slide, they crafted a plan of petty revenge that involved a barrage of telemarketing calls. Want to hear how it all went down? Let’s dive in.

After receiving prank calls about their missing dog, Redditor decides to take revenge

'You want to prank call me about my missing dog? Enjoy getting ALL THE telemarketing phone calls my guy?'

My dog went missing a couple weeks ago, and I miss her terribly.

We’ve been putting up missing posters with reward money to try to get her back.

Yesterday, someone called me from a number I didn’t recognize, but with the right area code.

I excitedly answered the phone…. Only to slowly realize I was hearing some very human barking into my phone.

I immediately hung up. I was very angry but willing to let it go. Until they called again last night.

Anyway, this i__ot didn’t block their number so now I’m requesting information from colleges, insurance, extended warranties, etc. on their behalf.

It’s very very petty, but damn I think it’s fitting.

Edit: Wow! Thank you everyone for the outpouring of support on here.

I’m not a person who posts much or has much to say really so it really means a lot to me.

I appreciate all of the suggestions and awards- you guys are great.

I made a monetary donation to our local no-k__l pet rescue in honor of y’all today. Again, thank you all very much for all of the encouragement.

In this scenario, two well‑documented psychological concepts help explain what’s going on: the Frustration‑Aggression Hypothesis and Displaced Aggression.

According to the first, when someone’s efforts are blocked or thwarted, it can lead to aggression, realising that the telephone prank added insult to the already raw pain of a missing pet, OP felt a legitimate source of frustration. (Simply Psychology)

Displaced aggression explains how that anger, unable to reach its original source (the prankster acting from behind a number), is redirected into a safer or more accessible outlet (signing up the caller for telemarketing calls). (Verywell Mind)

OP’s response, attempting to reclaim control by orchestrating minor retaliation, aligns with these frameworks. The prank call wasn’t simply annoying; it compounded OP’s feelings of helplessness (over the missing dog) and disrespect (the mockery through barking).

The decision to retaliate was an attempt to restore personal agency. Turning the phone number into a target for telemarketing is a kind of symbolic justice: the prankster experienced the kind of intrusion OP endured.

Importantly, this doesn’t mean OP’s response was about healthy conflict resolution; it reflects a coping mechanism when one’s emotional needs (validation, control) are compromised.

The research on displaced anger warns that while redirecting frustration may feel satisfying, it often doesn’t resolve the root issue and can create further cycles of resentment. (Verywell Health)

In short, the prank call acted as a trigger, but the deeper fuel was the ongoing stress and vulnerability of the missing‑pet situation. The retaliation, though petty, was a way to reclaim dignity. Recognising the psychological patterns at play offers insight, not judgement.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

This group cheered for some epic, long-lasting revenge strategies

Llamasaurus21 − That's the kind of revenge that will still have results months from now, it's fantastic. I hope you find your dog!

PyroKinetic66 − Literal human trash. I'm sorry OP, that's horrible. I sincerely hope you find your pupper.

Make flyers offering free pitbull puppies, use a Google pic of a blue nose. Use said a__hole's phone number.

Post it all around the hood and on Craigslist. Instant karma.

Rich-Uncle-Skeleton- − This is one of those situations where you should feel absolutely no shame for your pettiness.

Whoever made those calls is a scumbag. I hope your dog is found safe and well!

These commenters threw in a mix of personal digs

DetailEquivalent7708 − Sounds like someone who would be very interested in the jehovah's witnesses and possibly scientology.

[Reddit User] − You need to sign him up for obedience training, post ads for dog walking, etc.

[Reddit User] − I can't remember it, but pretty sure you could easily find it.

There is some website, where you enter a phone number of someone you don't like,

and it will automate the task to send that number to hundreds of websites information requests.

VineyardLuver − You could also do a reverse search on the number to get their address. No sense in using only one avenue of revenge.

These users shared their own frustrating experiences

laurenlo26 − Gross are you serious? What a terrible human. I would recommend getting a health insurance quote online.

I made the mistake of doing so and I get called at least 15 times a day LOL

ArsePucker − I had a guy completely waste my and my wife’s time 6 or 7 years ago when buying a quad, he was kinda a d__k on the phone,

saying not to low ball him, quad was like new etc etc. we drive 2 hrs, quad isn’t what he says.

Really n__ty negotiation to account for bikes broken fenders / smashed rim / A arm bent etc (pics of bike hid all that).

I start loading it into truck, wife’s going thru paperwork. No registration. I get in DMV website, it owes nearly $500 in back fees / fines etc.

He says it’s not his fault, he’s a car guy, I tell him it’s the same s__t for bikes / quads / cars etc.

He won’t reduce price so I roll the quad out my truck, wife hops in truck and we leave!

I saved his number and now anytime anyone asks for my number, I give them his, been doing it for years. F__k that guy!

These commenters joked about adding Scientology to the mix for extra annoyance and shared personal stories of petty revenge

Dexterous_Maximus − Oh do scientology too! They send tons of content including tv guides of their special channels

EDIT: Very sorry to hear about your dog, best of luck

Umichjenks − During anesthesia school I had a clinical instructor who was a cya next Tuesday.

Clinical site was 1 hr away and we woke at 4 am to do our heart rotation. So naturally i carpooled with a kid in my class at the same...

One day at 6 pm I finished my room and went to break room and told him I’d be study as his OR case was still going.

His preceptor tells the clinical site director that I tried to make her let him go home early.

Clinical site leader pulled both of us into hallway next day and screamed at us.

School had my back, and I saved her phone number so anytime there is a chance to add a phone # to a marketing promotion I put her number down.

These two suggested signing the target up for endless marketing and medical insurance calls

Specialist_Passage83 − I would sign them up for so much s__t that they have to change their phone number.

reservation2fwm − Sign him up for medical insurance quotes. He will have someone calling his phone every second for weeks

What do you think? Was this petty revenge too much, or was it a fitting response? If you were in the Redditor’s shoes, how would you have handled this prank? Share your thoughts below!
