Man Refuses to Crochet Baby Blanket After Coworker Never Paid, Then Gets Called “Petty”

Sometimes, a small act of kindness can slowly turn into an uncomfortable situation when people start confusing generosity with obligation.

Many friendships and workplace relationships are tested when money becomes involved, especially when someone provides a skill that takes time, effort, and dedication.

The original poster (OP) has been crocheting since childhood and turned a simple hobby into a way of creating thoughtful gifts and custom items for coworkers.

What started as a kind gesture quickly became popular, but one coworker’s unpaid order changed how OP handled future requests.

Now, OP is refusing to make another special item for that coworker’s family until an old debt is settled.

Read on to find out why OP is questioning whether setting this boundary went too far.

Man who crochets handmade gifts for coworkers sets a payment boundary

not the actual photo

'AITAH for refusing to crochet for a coworker after she didn't pay me?'

I 34 male, love to crochet. I picked it up from my step mom and have been

crocheting since I was about 7. I won't say I'm excellent at it but I do okay.

I work in a predominantly female workplace. I crochet on breaks. We went

through a time at work were almost everyone was having a baby at one

point. About 3 ladies all got pregnant within 3-5 months of each other.. I

got them each something on their registry and also gave each one a baby blanket

This opened the door to people wanting other things like gloves, hats, even

a sweater. The baby blankets were free of course bc that's my gift to the

baby. I informed them that i could do the other projects at a cost. 10-15$

for scarves and hats and gloves depending on pattern and colors wanted,

30-80 for blankets again depending on what they wanted, the cost of yarn,

time, size etc. they agreed and I got started

It's been fun, but in the beginning I wasn't smart about it and would give

them the project before getting paid. We were all friendly and I know how

much our job pays (very little) so if they didn't have it, I said it was fine and

they could catch up on the next check. This worked okay until a worker we

will call Kay orders 3 sets of hats gloves and scarves. She didn't have the

money upon completion and like the others, I said it's fine and she could

catch up and pay later. Times are hard, I get it.

She ended up paying for 2, but not the last one. I gave her time but after a

few paychecks I did remind her she still owed for the last one. Another

month of excuses, another reminder, and nothing. I realized she wasn't

going to pay. I didn't ask for the product back, but did change how I

collected payment. Everyone now has to pay beforehand, not after.

Kay has been asking for a baby blanket now as her son is having a baby and

I have told her I won't be doing that until she pays for the last set that she

was given. She hasn't. And I haven't made anything else for her.

She has started bad mouthing me to other coworkers behind my back. I

know this bc those coworkers are telling me. She's called me cheap, that I

don't even make things that are good quality, that I'm punishing her among

other things. She has also said to me that I'm breaking a tradition that I

started and am being petty. I went to management (we have no official HR

department) and they said to basically work it out ourselves. None of my

other coworkers are siding with her, and they've all put in more orders

from me, but I'm wondering if I'm being the AH for not letting this go.

So am I the AH for refusing to make a baby blanket for her son's baby after

she didn't pay me? Only reason I think I might be the AH it's because this

isn't something for her that I'm refusing to make it's for a baby and it does

feel like I'm not being fair because it's not like the baby didn't pay me.

What are your thoughts?

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are the ones that involve kindness.

Many people who love creating things for others struggle with the moment when generosity starts being treated like an obligation.

OP’s situation was not really about a baby blanket.

It was about learning that a gift given from the heart can slowly become something people feel entitled to receive.

OP built a positive tradition at work by sharing a skill he had loved since childhood.

The baby blankets were acts of kindness, and the paid projects were a separate agreement where coworkers understood the value of his time, materials, and effort.

The conflict began when one coworker received a finished product, failed to pay the agreed amount, and then expected another favor without resolving the first issue.

OP’s hesitation was not about punishing a baby; it was about protecting a boundary after someone ignored his trust.

A different way to view this situation is that OP’s crochet work represents more than yarn and patterns.

For him, it carries years of practice, emotional connection, and personal meaning.

When someone refuses to pay for a handmade item, they are not only ignoring a financial agreement; they may unintentionally communicate that the creator’s time is not valuable.

In creative communities, this is a common struggle. Artists, bakers, crafters, and other skilled people are often pressured to “just do one more thing” because their work is viewed as a hobby rather than labor.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s decision feels reasonable.

The blanket may be for a baby, but the request comes through a person who already demonstrated a pattern of avoiding responsibility.

If OP gives another handmade item without resolving the unpaid order, it could reinforce the idea that his boundaries can be ignored without consequences.

Compassion for a child does not require accepting unfair treatment from an adult.

At the same time, it is understandable why OP feels conflicted.

He is clearly someone who enjoys making people happy, and refusing a newborn something feels emotionally uncomfortable.

However, kindness works best when it is voluntary, not demanded.

A handmade gift loses its meaning when the creator feels pressured or disrespected.

Ultimately, OP is not refusing to celebrate a new baby. He is asking for basic respect and accountability.

A healthy workplace friendship should allow generosity to exist alongside fairness.

Sometimes the kindest thing someone can do for themselves is stop giving people unlimited access to their kindness.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters agreed OP should stop making items for Kay

nemesis72988 − NTA If Kay felt that you don’t make good quality products,

then why doesn’t she get a baby blanket elsewhere? You spent time making

hats, gloves, and scarves and she still didn’t pay for the last one. She

doesn’t respect you or your labor. If she wants a handmade baby blanket so

badly for her son, she can crochet a baby blanket herself.

There’s plenty of YouTube videos for her to learn.

Fast_Ad_322 − You're not being an AH. That baby doesn't really have

feelings you can offend. It sounds like others are on your side so that must

be a relief at least. You're investing your time and materials for people who

are your friends, not for someone that doesn't pay what she owes, then

bad mouths you to others.

Careless_Welder_4048 − NTA. She’s cheap, don’t do it.

Background_Hope_1905 − NTA, but never make anything for her again. If

she asks just tell her you don’t feel comfortable selling her something she’s

already verbalized didn’t meet her expectations, but she’s welcome to look

on Etsy for a product that does.

These Redditors supported OP’s pricing changes and emphasized that crochet requires costly materials, time, and skill

Glittering-Set-2510 − NTA I'm PETTY AF. I would give discounts to

everyone, call it the Karen Deal. If you pay upfront, you save. and never

help her again. As for her toxic work behavior, stay clear. Shes trouble. she

will dig her own grave.

JustanOldBabyBoomer − Ms. Kraken who is refusing to pay for YOUR

WORK is known as a GIMMEPIG among us fiber artists.   Given the cost of

yarn and the hours of work, I would be charging a hell of a lot more than

$5.00!  Don't light yourself on fire to keep others warm.   Don't

shortchange yourself.

_Fureg_ − NTA Crochet is a pricey, time consuming hobby. It also sounds

like it’s become your side hustle, so there’s no reason to not get paid for

the time and resources you use. Your coworkers seem to get and have no

issue with paying. It seems Kay is the only one with an issue. Maybe offer to

teach her instead if she doesn’t want to pay?

But otherwise, no. NTA

These users pointed out that Kay would receive the credit for the gift while insulting the person who made it

Vinnybon50 − Keep in mind that even though it's for her grandson, she will

be the one getting the credit for the gift. You would be making it for her,

not the baby. She has already shown her character and lack of respect by

bad mouthing you and refusing to pay for your work. She's a Karen who is

lashing out for not getting her way.

Don't encourage her by giving in to her. NTA

PhotoGuy342 − This isn’t a baby you would be making it for—it’s for your

coworker to give to her son so she’ll look like a superstar. And if she thinks

that your products are crap, why would she be so anxious to have more of

them? For that matter, if they’re crap, why would she want to give crap to

her grandbaby?

content_great_gramma − She refused to pay what she owed and then

when you refused to make anything else until she paid up, she bad

mouthed you. She bit the hand that fed her. Even if she pays what she

owes, do not make the baby blanket for her. Get a cheap "How to Crochet"

book and tell her to have fun.

PossessionNo93 − NTA. .. just remind Kay you only make cheap poor quality

stuff and surely she wants better for her grandchild. .. 🤣😂🤣 You have to

play people like her at their own game. .. Payment upfront at all times, and

no the child won't feel anything because how are they going to ever know? ??

In the end, this crochet conflict was never really about a baby blanket. It was about respect, trust, and whether kindness should have limits.

The OP offered her skills with good intentions, but one unpaid order changed how she handled future requests.

Do you think refusing the blanket was a fair boundary, or should the innocent baby have been considered separately?

Was Kay’s reaction justified, or did she cross a line by attacking someone who helped her? Share your thoughts below!
