Man Says No To Sharing Dinner With His Pregnant Sister, Now Everyone’s Mad At Him

There’s a special kind of tension that comes when food delivery, family, and emotions collide. One wrong move, or one missing meal, can turn an ordinary evening into an argument that nobody saw coming.

That’s exactly what happened when a man’s pregnant sister dropped by for a visit. He thought she’d already left when he ordered food, but when she returned hungry and found nothing waiting for her, she was furious.

He stood his ground, but now he’s left questioning whether a simple dinner mistake made him the bad guy.

'AITA for not sharing my food with or ordering for my hungry pregnant sister?'

As the title says, my sister is pregnant. Four or five months, and yeah. So she came over to my place to chill yesterday and spent half the day here.

My younger brother was also there, and we just watched some movies/played games.

After a few more hours, my sister said that after the next episode, she was going to go home, then stepped out to call her boyfriend.

Since it was nearing that time and my brother was spending the night, we decided to order some food for supper.

Ordered, finished the episode, and then my sister came back during the second. Delivery came much faster than we anticipated (usually takes a solid 45 minutes to an hour).

Anyway, it got here while my sister was still here, and she got mad because we didn't order anything for her (she was about to leave, and I didn't even...

Then she asked if we could just share my meal which I gave a stern no. I was hungry and I couldn't share food while hungry. It never leaves you...

So I offered to give it to her, and she'll just give me the money for it, so I could order another one for myself, and I'd eat something else...

This suggestion seemed to make her even angrier and she called me an a__hole for having the audacity to charge her when I was the one who made the mistake...

Before she was even finished shouting at me, her bf arrived (not even 10 minutes after the delivery was even made).

Thought she'd just get over it, but she's still mad at me now and brought our mother into this. AITA?

Clinically, pregnancy can heighten reactivity and vigilance; mood and anxiety shifts are common and medically recognized.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) notes that mental-health changes during pregnancy are common and advises patients to speak up when they notice mood shifts or stress.

ACOG’s guidance puts it plainly: “Talk with your ob-gyn if you feel sad, stressed, anxious, or if you have any mood changes.”

Those changes don’t excuse rudeness, but they help explain why being left out of a food order can feel like being left out of the family.

Zooming out, the emotional labor behind caregiving often falls on women, shaping expectations about who anticipates needs, like ordering an extra meal without being asked.

Sociologist Jessica Calarco’s work on how women “fill the gaps” in families highlights why some women expect care to be proactive rather than requested; that expectation can make ordinary oversights feel like neglect.

Meanwhile, relationship science consistently shows that perceived support (including small, concrete gestures) predicts less distress around the transition to parenthood, evidence that tiny acts can carry outsized emotional weight.

What should happen next? A neutral reset helps. A short message from OP acknowledging impact (“I didn’t mean to exclude you; I’ll remember next time”) plus a simple, future-oriented plan (“I’ll add a default extra meal when you’re over”) meets her need for reassurance without accepting unfair blame.

In parallel, the sister can clarify preferences (“Please include me if you’re ordering”) so the family isn’t guessing. That blend, explicit asks and small anticipatory gestures, reduces repeat friction.

In the end, this wasn’t about noodles. It was about belonging. OP’s boundary around sharing food was human; her anger came from wanting to feel prioritized.

The fix isn’t score-keeping, it’s turning routine moments (like dinner) into tiny signals of care, so nobody has to read between the lines.

Check out how the community responded:

Most sided with the OP, saying it’s perfectly reasonable not to order food for someone who already said they were leaving.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You thought she was leaving. And since the fridge had leftovers, she could have eaten those. It's not like you're starving her.

Dead_Quinn − NTA. I’m pregnant and I don’t expect food from others, especially if I’m visiting and about to leave.

Would it have been nice if you had asked? Sure, but she’s not entitled to your food.

aquasaurex − NTA. She was leaving, you offered to have her take you food (if she paid for it), and she rejected that offer.

She wasn't just pissed that you didn't order her food when she was LEAVING, she was pissed you weren't willing to pay for HER food.

Fluffy-Couch-Shark − NTA. Your sister is ridiculous.

Some commenters, though, thought the OP could have handled the situation with more tact.

HistoricalQuail − NAH, you could have said "hey sis, we're ordering food, did you want to stick around and eat with us?" and that would have absolved you of everything.

That, or just wait until she has left to order.

It's sort of a d__k move to order food and not let one of the people who's still there know that it's happening/an option, but it's understandable since she wouldn't...

Evil_Genius_42 − ESH. Stay with me on this, it was rude not to at least ask her if she wanted to stay for dinner before you ordered.

However, it's unreasonable for her to continue to be angry since she had already said she was leaving and hadn't mentioned she was hungry in the first place.

This should need to be arbitrated by neither Reddit nor your mother (seriously, who goes and tells mommy on her brothers when she's 5 months pregnant and living away from...

Double-dutcher − Info: You said she was there for half the day... So, like, she had lunch right before she got there or at your house?

Had you at any point offered either one of your guests something to eat?

teatabletea − So you can’t share food because you are hungry, but you could give it all away, snack on something, and order again?

AnnetteyS − YTA. The polite thing would have been to extend the invite to her; she could have stayed and watched another episode, or she would have declined and left....

Others took a middle ground, saying both parties dropped the ball.

yellowchaitea − ESH. She was a bit extreme in her reaction, but you also could/have asked her if she wanted food before ordering.

Flubber1215 − ESH. You could have asked whether she wanted anything. Yeah, you thought she was going to leave, but she could have changed her mind on that, especially after...

aussigerman − ESH, can't believe the number of people that say you're not an ass. I mean, have none of them ever had guests over?

Do you not offer drinks and food to people coming to your house? I don't care if it is family or not. You could have had the decency to wait...

I don't care if it came earlier or not, and I don't care if she was pregnant. You broke the first rule of hospitality. If the host is eating, everybody...

gravitationalarray − Um... I'm leaning towards ESH. There could have been better communication all around.

Then there were those who thought the sister’s overreaction was just dramatic.

Espadanumber6 − NTA. Joey doesn’t share food. In all seriousness, she left your place, and then you ordered food because you were hungry.

It wasn’t deberate after she left, yeah? Then there’s no issue. You bought and paid for it.

idontwannadothis87 − Is it common practice for people not to offer food when eating in front of others?

Like, maybe it’s a cultural thing, but that’s like the epitome of rude in my family. Only someone lacking complete home training would do that.

All the people saying she was leaving anyway, well, yeah, but it would have been nice for her to be invited to stay for dinner with her siblings. She probably...

Sibling spats over food can spiral faster than anyone expects, especially with pregnancy hormones in the mix. A little grace on both sides might’ve gone a long way.

Do you think the OP should’ve just handed over the meal without hesitation, or was standing firm about personal boundaries fair play here? Drop your thoughts, who’s really hangry, and who’s just hurt?
