Man Thinks Coworker Is Lazy Until He Learns What Was Happening Behind the Scenes

It is easy to judge a coworker when their unfinished tasks start landing on everyone else’s desk. I think frustration can make us fill in the blanks quickly, especially when someone seems slow, distracted, or absent whenever the workload gets heavy.

One office worker admitted that he had written off a colleague named Mike as lazy after months of delayed replies and missed deadlines. The rest of the team often had to compensate, which only reinforced that impression.

Then the OP covered Mike’s responsibilities during an absence and stumbled across information that completely changed how he saw the situation. Suddenly, the behavior everyone had criticized looked very different. Scroll down to see what he discovered and why it left him rethinking how quickly we assume the worst about people at work.

'I Thought My Co-Worker Was Just Lazy, But Then I Found Out the Truth'

So, there’s this guy at work, Mike. You know the type—always the last one to respond in group chats, takes forever to finish assignments,

and somehow manages to disappear right when things get busy. Everyone in the office kind of rolls their eyes when his name comes up.

I’ll be honest, I thought he was just slacking off. Like, how hard is it to meet a deadline or answer an email?

It was frustrating because the rest of us had to pick up the slack.

Then, last week, I had to cover for him while he was out.

That’s when I found an email thread between him and our boss—turns out, Mike has been dealing with some pretty serious health issues.

He didn’t talk about it, didn’t ask for special treatment, just quietly did what he could while handling a situation way bigger than work.

It hit me like a ton of bricks. Here I was assuming the worst about him, when in reality, he was doing his best under tough circumstances.

When he came back, I made sure to check in and offer to help whenever he needed it.

He just smiled and said, “I appreciate it, man. I just don’t want to be a burden.”

Moral of the story: You never really know what someone’s dealing with behind the scenes.

Maybe give people a little more grace.. What do you think? Has this ever happened to you?

It is easy to judge people by the inconvenience they create for us, especially at work. When deadlines slip, messages go unanswered, and responsibilities spill onto everyone else, frustration can quickly become a story about character: He is lazy. He does not care. He expects other people to carry him.

That appears to be exactly what happened with Mike. His co-worker was not trying to be cruel; they were interpreting visible behavior without access to the invisible circumstances behind it.

The emotional shift in this story comes from discovering how incomplete that interpretation was. Mike’s delays and disappearances had seemed like indifference, but serious health problems gave those same behaviors an entirely different meaning. More importantly, Mike apparently carried those difficulties quietly because he did not want to become a burden.

That detail adds another layer. People dealing with illness often have to manage not only physical symptoms but also guilt, fear of disappointing others, and anxiety about being viewed as unreliable.

There is a useful psychological perspective here: people often explain another person’s behavior by focusing too heavily on personality while underestimating circumstances. Psychologists call this the fundamental attribution error.

Social psychologist Saul McLeod explains through Simply Psychology that observers commonly attribute someone else’s actions to internal traits while overlooking situational pressures that may be shaping their behavior.

That concept fits Mike almost perfectly. His colleagues saw slow responses and unfinished work, so “lazy” became an easy explanation. They could see the missed deadlines.

They could not see medical appointments, exhaustion, pain, fear, or whatever else was happening outside their view. Once the hidden context became visible, the same behavior suddenly looked less like apathy and more like someone struggling to remain functional.

Still, compassion does not mean pretending workload problems do not affect everyone else. Co-workers can reasonably feel stressed when they repeatedly have to compensate for someone.

The healthier takeaway is not “never judge anything.” It is to leave room for uncertainty before turning frustration into a verdict about another person’s character.

The co-worker’s response after learning the truth was probably the most constructive part of the story. They did not overwhelm Mike with questions or treat him as fragile. They simply checked in and offered support.

Perhaps that is the lesson worth carrying forward. In workplaces, families, and friendships, people rarely show us the full weight they are carrying. Accountability still matters, but a little humility about what we cannot see can prevent irritation from hardening into unfair judgment.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These users stressed that hidden struggles deserve empathy rather than quick judgment

[Reddit User] − I wish my coworkers had this level of empathy. Tears are welling up reading this.

I’m a severely depressed man, dealing with bipolar, ADHD and anxiety.

As a father of four, I’m always tending to them, but my wife made a selfish career change that took all of my backup support away.

I’m working 24/7 as a result, I log on before I get the kids to school, get to work, and head back for school pickups.

I have activities to bring them to, meals to prep, homework to oversee, and cleaning of the house.

My wife comes home, lets me know what I missed, and says she’s too touched out and exhausted for anyone or anything.

I’m up with the kids in the middle of the night even. I have no support. At work, I look like the most unreliable human being.

Constantly needing to head back home, WFH frequently and struggling to keep up with everything.

My boss likes to believe I’m struggling to build trust with my department, but it’s ludicrous when all of my peers are independently wealthy

and don’t need to work because their spouses make more than enough, given each of them are married women.

I am the sole male manager in our organization level.

This is not a rant about sexism, but rather the fundamental lack of understanding or empathy.

I get called out all the time for having to tend to my family, “why can’t your wife do it? ” or even worse,

getting talked to like I’m a child with tasks, not trusting I’ll finish them.

They don’t see me on at 12:30 in the morning finishing things, they see that I didn’t get it by close of business (same thing, really).

I feel so alone. My schedule makes it difficult to connect at work, so I’m alone unless in my team meetings.

Everyone just assumes I’m unreliable at my role. But I’m not.

I get what is needed done and constantly check in with my team. I am the most responsive person on Teams bar none in our department.

But none of it is good enough, so I’m constantly straddling the line of success and the (almost) inevitable PIP.

My wife constantly reminds me that I ruined her chances at staying at home with the kids, but I was never going to be able to keep up the standard...

So that’s manifested into a cold marriage with no intimacy. I sleep whenever I get a moment of pure solace. Even on lunch breaks.

If it weren’t for messing up my family’s lives, I don’t think I’d stay on this planet anymore.

This is from someone who was top of their class, and promoted frequently in the first phase of their career.

I just wish people understood a fraction of what I deal with.

Kimbaaaaly − One of my favorite sayings is "everyone you meet is going through a battle you know nothing about"

PackOnTop − I had an old guy work for me at a construction site. Was always miserable and cranky and a bit weird.

Opened up a bit as time went by and found out he lost 4 of his 5 kids before they reached 10 years old.

Everything about him made perfect sense after that and I would be mad at the world too.

Ended up being a real sweet guy once you understood all that.

HighFIDZ − I islam there's this saying : "Give your brother 40 excuses, if you can't find any, assume he has an excuse"

Ever since then i knew that giving people excuses is better not only for them, but for you as well

These commenters reacted more skeptically, mocking the tone or obviousness of the lesson

cuddle-bubbles − I thought I'm reading a linkedin post for a moment

STORMDRAINXXX − You’re just now learning to assume the best in people?

These Redditors noted that serious illness is often kept private, even from coworkers

Icy_Truth_9634 − I recently had a salesman sent by Corporate that was intended to help us find new business.

He was a middle aged guy, and would make rounds for us once a week, and provide us with a list of our potential customers the following day.

He would detail what was discussed, and what the customer’s reaction was to the visit.

He did a great job for a few weeks, but after Christmas, we didn’t see him for a couple of months.

We were told that he was out on personal leave, and that he would return in time.

The time stretched out a little further, so I called the office asking for an answer. I was assured that we would see him the following Monday.

I didn’t recognize him when he walked in to our store.

He had lost a tremendous amount of weight, and his face looked as if there was skin wrapped around his skull.

I asked him what had happened. He refused to go into details, just said that he had been having some difficulties with his digestive system.

He smiled, and said he was getting better, and he left to make those calls.

The following day, I received the list of customers that he had called on, and the remainder of his report.

It was probably half of what he’d done previously. Within the following week, we received a letter from Corporate telling us he was no longer our salesman.

Of course, we asked others in the company what had happened. No one knew.

Eventually I talked to the District Sales Manager, with the first thing I asked being about this guy.

He told me that it was a health issue, but that he didn’t elaborate, so he was placed on administrative leave.

Two weeks later, a company memo included the news of his death.

He had been trying to deal with a series of tumors, but it wasn’t caught in time. He never told anyone.

Just a few months earlier, he was a picture of health. Now he’s gone. I was finally made aware of his reasoning behind telling us nothing.

An attendee of the funeral had spoken to his wife and young children.

The wife said that he didn’t want to be treated like he was special, and that the mention of the “C” word was forbidden, in his home,

in his church, or with friends and colleagues. He was a good man.

I didn’t know him long, but that skeletal smile is sticking with me. I’ll most likely remember him forever.

He knew he was likely dying very soon, but he still produced a big smile for us to remember. Cool dude.

These Redditors noted that serious illness is often kept private, even from coworkers

Icr711 − Grace is my focus in 2025

Hot-Writing-5996 − Yep a lot of people these days have cancer in the middle age and I’ve had several coworkers with Cancer.

They don’t always wanna talk about it. Or make it known

Hamfistedlovemachine − Went through my brothers suicide, a make a wish trip with my daughter and losing my dad to Alzheimer’s in ten years.

My daughter is fine, my work was my island and coworkers were best friends. I was lucky, I wasn’t secretive about any of it and I regret nothing.

When you share your story you will see some fantastic stuff from your inner circle.

Saved my hope in humanity and made me a better person. Not that I’m not an ahole, but a few people might say otherwise.

Would learning the truth have changed how most people treated Mike? And where should workplaces draw the line between accountability and compassion when someone clearly seems to be struggling? Share the verdict below.
