Up to May 1, 2024, Avengers 5 has no notable developments of a release date. Given that the feature’s premier is expected on May 1, 2026, the production of Avengers 5 might either have to speed up very soon or is now on the run under severe precautions.
The film does have a large ensemble cast drawn from the entire MCU; managing such a cast, which needs time to properly introduce, is markedly different from a few seconds of collaboration in films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine.
To ensure Avengers 5 reaches its full potential, Marvel Studios must dedicate ample time to its development and pre-production phases. Marvel Continues to Face Significant Challenges with Avengers 5
The production of Avengers 5 has faced a series of setbacks. Initially, Jeff Loveness, who wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was dismissed from the project. This was closely followed by a one-year delay in the release date, shifting from May 2025 to May 2026, a decision influenced by the 2023 Writers’ Strike.
Complicating matters further, Jonathan Majors, cast as Kang the Conqueror, encountered legal troubles that cast doubt on his continued involvement, prompting Marvel Studios to revisit the entire project.
In a significant shake-up, Jonathan Majors was officially let go, and director Destin Daniel Cretton exited to pursue other endeavors. Additionally, the originally planned subtitle, “The Kang Dynasty,” was removed.
Since these upheavals, the only major update from Marvel Studios has been the appointment of Michael Waldron as the new writer for Avengers 5. No other news or further delays have been announced since.

Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU haven’t prominently featured the Avengers, and many of the newer heroes haven’t even met yet.
Earlier, the Infinity Saga built up to Thanos’ threat in movies like The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, developing relationships between main characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. Additionally, the Multiverse Saga has skipped the team-up films typical of earlier phases and unexpectedly ended Kang’s storyline midway through Phase 5.
Previously, the MCU used the Infinity Stones to weave a clear narrative that led to the climactic events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, where Thanos aimed to collect the stones, and the Avengers united to stop him.
As of now, with Avengers 5’s release two years away, its plot remains a complete mystery. It’s unclear whether Kang the Conqueror will return if the Council of Kangs will make an appearance, or if the multiverse itself is in danger.
