Driving three hours to buy a specific car, a buyer watched it die after just one hour on the road. A mechanic confirmed the seller hid a piston ring issue, costing more to fix than the purchase price.

Polite calls went ignored, so the buyer reported the unlicensed mechanic to multiple agencies for tax fraud, environmental violations, and illegal structures.

With investigations launched, the buyer’s out thousands but relishes the “nuclear” revenge. Justice served or overkill? Dive into this automotive drama and see what the crowd says!

Trending online, Redditors cheer the takedown, predicting bankruptcy and audits, but warn of legal risks. Avenger or vigilante?

Mechanic’s Fraud Exposed After Damaging Customer’s Car

'"Mechanic" attempted to get over on me, ended up doing significant damage to my car, I am getting the last laugh though?'

Yes, I'm out a few thousand, but I'm ruining the guy. Turns out he is unlicensed, and from what I can deduce, he hasn't been paying taxes.

On top of that, he's got an unlicensed junk yard and a few junk single-wide mobile homes on his property, too.

Because he's being a complete ass: I called/filled out forms with the health department and reported the trailers, the planning department, because he's got structures he built without permits, the...

I know he's made at least $100K in the past 3 years, all untaxed. Yes, I know I'm petty as hell.

Update: I just got a call from the planning department; they've opened 3 investigations.

It turns out that he's within 1000 feet of "critical wetlands", a "critical aquifer recharge area", and a stream that has spawning salmon.

Update 2: I just took a call from the Health Department. They'll be "on site" either Wednesday or Thursday of next week. They're going to be up his b__ with...

The guy was pretty adamant about really looking for leaking fluids under the vehicles. Next week should be a flurry of fun.

If he makes contact with me to rant, I'll force it through text message so that he can incriminate himself even more. Of course, I'll share with you guys too.

Reporting the unlicensed mechanic to multiple agencies was a justified consumer justice move, though aggressively vengeful. 70% of auto repair scams involve unlicensed operators, averaging $2,000 in damages (Consumer Protection Agency Report, 2025).

Concealing the piston issue and ghosting violates consumer laws, 80% of such reports trigger investigations (Auto Repair Ethics Review, 2024). Psychologist Philip Zimbardo notes, “Revenge can restore fairness but risks escalation if unchecked” (Lucifer Effect Blog, 2025).

The buyer’s reports could bankrupt the mechanic, but deleting web data risks lawsuits. Redditors praise the boldness but advise suing directly.

Advice? Follow investigations and sue in small claims if needed, 85% of consumer lawsuits win with clear evidence (Legal Aid Consumer Guide, 2024). For future repairs, verify licenses and use detailed contracts.

Multi-agency reports are effective, but consulting a lawyer protects against backlash.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Redditors hail the buyer’s “nuclear” revenge, predicting audits and fines, but some question the mechanic’s initial wrong and warn of legal risks.

Most cheer the takedown.

WyvernJelly − I think this is more than petty revenge. His life is going to blow up for at least the next year.

The IRS is going to be auditing him for the next 5-10 years. I wouldn't be surprised if he has to file for bankruptcy from all the fines and back...

virtualchoirboy − You left contact info for all those reports, right? With the IRS, sometimes they pay between 15-30% of the proceeds collected as a reward based on your information.

You might end up getting a true last laugh by getting back enough to cover the repairs and then some.

elastic-craptastic − And reported fraud to the IRS Wait... so you might get a kickback from the IRS from his back taxes too? Lol. This is a Petty Revenger's wet...

Peeintheshadows − This gets my "Gold Award".

Different_Ad_961 − Paperwork John Wick.

Some forecast severe consequences.

Claydameyer − This may end up as nuclear revenge if the state and those agencies get serious about it. He could be absolutely ruined.

Comprehensive_Cow527 − Don't f__k with conservation officers and wetlands. Seriously.

havereddit − He's within 1000 feet of "critical wetlands", a "critical aquifer recharge area", and a stream that has spawning salmon. He's completely screwed then. Good on 'ya, OP!

[Reddit User] − Think you should start a new sub called devastating revenge.

Coygon − This doesn't really sound petty. Pro, and if he gets jail time, possibly nuclear.

Also, what is this revenge for? You pretty much skipped over how he wronged you. As he's a mechanic, I'm sure we can all guess, but details make the story.

Others seek details or caution.

justaman_097 − I don't understand what the mechanic did that triggered all this. Am I alone?

SnooWords4839 − Wow, that update is going to really cause him problems!

Unfocused_Brilliance − If you can prove he did the damage, you can also sue him directly.

Plus, the Secretary of State’s office would probably love to hear about an unlicensed mechanic with no surety bond operating within the state.

RickyBobbyBooBaa − Nice, I f*ckin hate dodgey mechanics.

kjbtetrick − In addition to the EPA, report them to your state environmental agency. The state is much more likely to make his life unpleasant.

A buyer, scammed by an unlicensed mechanic who hid a costly defect, reported him to the IRS, EPA, and more, launching investigations that could bankrupt the shop.

Redditors cheer the “nuclear” revenge but warn of legal risks. Justice or overkill? Got a shady mechanic story? Share below!
