MIL Attacks Her Son’s Fiancée With a Knife, Then Finally Faces the Consequences She Avoided for Years

in Social Issues

Some family conflicts start with small disagreements, but sometimes years of resentment, jealousy, and unresolved issues finally explode in one unforgettable moment.

The hardest part is realizing that someone you tried to include in your life may have been waiting for a reason to tear it apart.

The original poster (OP) had spent years dealing with her mother-in-law’s comments, but she always tried to keep the peace for the sake of her family.

That changed when a drunken argument at her in-laws’ house turned into a shocking accusation about OP’s greatest trauma and a violent confrontation in front of her children.

After that night, OP had to decide whether protecting her family meant walking away from someone they once considered family.

Scroll down to see how everything unfolded.

Woman’s toxic mother-in-law attacks her for years, but crosses the line when jealousy and cruelty turn into a shocking act of violence

'AITA for cutting contact with MiL and uninviting her to our wedding after she tried to stab me?'Hello fellow potatoes, strap in for a long one with a whole lotta context

because we like em big, we like em chunky for Queen Charlotte herself.

I 30F and my fiancee 30M have been together for 12 years, engaged for 6

and have 2 beautiful daughters 11F and 4F. My partner and I have known

eachother since we were 15yrs old but started dating after we graduated

high school. 6 months later i became pregnant (unplanned) and it was a

shock for not only us but our parents.

I had told my mum and she did not take it well and wanted me to abort the

baby and so did MiL after they both agreed we should have a meeting,

both saying we are too young and ruining our lives. My MiL chimed in and

said “how do you even know it’s yours?” To which my partner angrily said

“this conversation is over” grabbed my hand and we left. This is important i

promise. 9 months later we had our oldest and all of a sudden she was the

apple of both my mother’s and MiL eyes. We then announced her name

and her last name which is hyphenated with my last name and his. MiL was

not happy and said that I shouldn’t have done that as children are supposed

to take their father’s last name like my partner and his brother and sister.

My partner said that he had her last name as his middle name to which she

said she had to fight for it and only my partner has her last name but his

siblings do not and its not the same because of the hyphenation. My

mother chimed in and said that its not true as i have my mother’s last

name. MiL ignored her and said she wasn’t talking to her and kept going on

about her point. Before i could speak my partner told her its not her child

and if she wants to disrespect me and my mum she can leave.

This happened with our second child as well and my FiL just told her to be

quiet. His entire family have accepted me apart from her. She still calls me

his baby mama to others and even tells people that i refuse to get a

paternity test even though i did for both children and it shows that they

are her sons kids, they even look like him. At one family event she acted

politely and even said that we should squash any resentment for the

benefit of the kids, i later found out that my partner had spoken with her

and told her about the trauma i had gone through with my dads passing

which she later weaponised.

My Dad passed when I was 13 from a cardiac event that caused a brain

aneurysm and it was left to me to decide whether to keep him on life

support or not. My half brother and sister (dads kids) were my caregivers

when this was happening as my mum was 4 hours away. They gave the

directive that it was up to me to make the decision because he was more

present in my life than theirs. I knew my dad was an independent person

and it would be torture to keep him alive when he would be unable to do

anything. I decided to let him go and when my mum arrived at the hospital

she lost it. Blew up at both my half siblings and the drs for letting me make

the decision and it should have waited for her to come down. The Dr

explained it was a time sensitive procedure and that if they had waited

then the decision would have been made for my dad as his aneurysm

needed to be operated on asap. I had to go to therapy after his sister and

mother kept yelling that i murdered him during his funeral and tried to get

me removed however it backfired and they had to leave. When me and my

partner got together he wondered why every birthday and anniversary of

my dad’s death i would try and get black out drunk and thats when i told him the story.

So a few weeks ago, my kids and i went to go and pick my partner up from

his parents house as they were having a few drinks. We walked into

laughing and music. My kids went to play while i waited for their dad to

pack his stuff up. MiL (as drunk as Jack Sparrow) narrowed in on me and

asked why i was there? I explained that her son text that he was ready to

come home. She said he was home and that i should leave him and the kids

there as i wasn’t welcome. My partner told her to shut it and that I’m not

leaving here without them. She started going on about how im a bad gold

digging partner, I have a full time job and she works 6hrs a week stacking

shelves at the supermarket. She also brought up how ugly and overweight i

was and that i wasnt good enough for the family. My FiL was getting mad

and started yelling at her. I said “Dad its okay shes wasted and i just want to

go home” MiL turned red and said “Dont you call my kids dad, dad, just

because you killed yours doesn’t mean you can take theirs” it went quiet,

the music slowly transitioned to the next song and tears started to form in

my eyes and i stood there like a deer in headlights. “What did you just say?”

My partner asked in disbelief staring daggers towards his mother. She said

“you heard me, im sick of her calling your father dad when she” before she

could finish my FiL(bless him) said “i told her she could call me that, dont be

jealous because your dad chose to leave you and because shes going to

have our last name and you dont”(they are not married) then before she

could respond my partner chimed in saying “Not only that, i have decided

to get rid of your name from mine and take hers as a hyphenated name like

our kids so we are a cohesive family”. She turned around to grab something

and before i could react she charged me with a hunting knife for the basket

on the shelf, my partner pushed me out of the way and she ended up

slicing his arm, not to deep and my FiL tackled her and got the knife from

her while she was screaming and swearing. What made it worse is that

when i looked up i saw my kids in the door way, slack jawed and crying from

what they saw. I grabbed my partner and kids, took the kids to my mums

down the road and partner to the hospital.

I begged him that we should call the cops, but he kept saying that she

wouldnt survive jail and just to forget it. So i told him if thats the case i

dont feel comfortable with having her at the wedding which he agreed so i

text her saying she was not welcome. We have been getting mixed

messages from his siblings and his mothers side of the family. His siblings

visited us las week and said that he shouldn’t take my name and keep MiL

maiden name as he was the only one out of them who has it. Before he

could answer i put it back on them saying”if its that important to you then

why dont you add it to your name?” They both sheepishly looked at

eachother and i said “exactly, you have no right to tell your older brother to

keep a name that you wont take yourself, his name, his choice and he wants

us all to have the same last name” they both changed the subject and that

was it. We have only heard from MiL once since the incident asking if she

could see the kids, no apology or remorse. My partner said no and told her

to reflect on her actions, told her the kids saw everything and that my

oldest doesn’t want to see her.

Shes telling everyone that i started it, manipulated her son and grandkids

against her. Some people are calling me an a__hole because i shouldnt take

drunken moments to heart and she “wasnt herself” and others are on my

side and said i should have just went to the police.. So AITA

UPDATE1: So first of all wow, thank you for all the advice and concern,

instead of replying to all the comments ill just try get it all out via this update.

I have shown my partner this post and your comments. We have both

talked and agreed with the Majority. He apologised profusely about not

listening to me when the incident occurred and now realises that she

definitely could have killed me if he hadn’t intervened. He also confessed

to me that this was not the first time she had resorted to violence during a

drunk encounter but has told me its usually directed at his dad or him so he

was used to it, which is really sad and I now understand why he was raised

by his grandparents from 15 onwards.

She is definitely an a__oholic and has some unresolved anger issues that

she needs to deal to without us. I am not making excuses and neither is my

partner. So we both are going to the police station in the morning with his

discharge papers from the hospital to implement a restraining order. Our

oldest has been going to counselling since the incident and we are going to

ask the counsellor on Monday for a letter of recommendation to support

the restraining order.

We have cut contact with MiL and only talk to FiL. The family members who

are on her side we aren’t really close to, so cutting ties with them was easy.

At the time we both agreed it was a waste of breath to explain our side so

we decided not to. The rest of his family knows what she is like especially

towards me, she tells them since day 1 that i “stole her son” and turned her

other kids and partner against her. I am just present and encourage them, i

helped my brother in law get financial freedom from her (she was authority

on his bank account and would take money out on his payday when he was

in high school to pay for her habits) and i helped my sister in law get into

performing arts college and even help her move to the city. I have helped

my FiL with learning how to use his phone, taken him to the Drs when MiL

was too drunk to drive and my partner and have been his sober driver on

multiple events. So his family knows that she was lying when she was trying

to explain her side.

My family on the other hand went absolutely mental, they were ready to

ride at dawn, even my 80yr old aunty with cancer was willing to “catch a

case”. She reminded me she served in the army and still has her service

weapon saying “if they lock me up, it will be worth it cause ill be dead soon

anyways” this made me both laugh and cry. I just told them that it will be

sorted and shes not worth going to jail over. We have updated the school

and preschool to make sure if she attempts to get our kids then to call us

or the police. We have already set up passwords with vendors and my

cousins have agreed to get the rugby team as our wedding security. They

only want KFC, beer and home baking as payment as i am a baker. I will

update everyone if anything else pops off. Other than that i just wanted to

say thank you. Charlotte, my kids and i love you and my oldest daughter

always likes to imitate when you do the crane pose saying “we move….in

the shadows”

UPDATE 2: Everything went so fast and i swear i will try keep this a short as possible.

A few things i wanted to address in the comments.

1 i wish this was fake, trust me i honestly thought i was in an alternate

universe and it didn’t feel real but unfortunately this is my life.

2 its definitely hard to cut ties with family. I grew up with such a big and

loving family who has their quirks and i tried to give the MiL the benefit of

the doubt. Her words and passive aggressive attitude felt like jealousy and

realisation that she was losing control to me. My partner has had to deal

with my mother’s narcissistic tendencies so i thought dealing with his

alcoholic hating mum was fair at the time

3 My oldest is 11 so she has been going to therapy and feeling much better,

but my youngest is 4, she was confused on what was happening in the

moment and is still thriving so i didnt think she needed therapy. If she does

want to or if we see signs that she needs to we will facilitate it but she is

still the same old bubbly, social playful self.

Now to the update lols, so much has happened and i could not believe

what has unfolded. Turns out MiL has been charged in the past but never

had to spend any jail time. This was her literal 3rd strike and she has been

arrested! Although we only went in for a restraining order, we found out

that she had a record of domestic abuse, drink driving and public

disturbance and intoxication.

Once we presented the hospital report, the therapist letter of

recommendation and my FiL testimony of what had happened, the police

determined that this was too serious of a crime and issued an arrest

warrant. She was taken in this afternoon and news has spread throughout

his family. The ones who initially were on her side have gone quiet and the

rest of the family are both shocked and relieved. My partners siblings were

distraught at first but after talking with partner and FiL they realised that

this was the best step, not only for our family but also for her as it will give

her time to reflect and most of all get sober.

There is going to be a hearing as she has denied all allegations but my

cousin, who is a lawyer has assured me that she will not get away with this,

especially with mine, my partner and my FiL testimony. They did originally

want my oldest to testify bit i declined as it will cause more trauma than

good. If she wants to and feels like it will help then i will reconsider. So

there we are at the moment, puffy eyes from crying but also a sense of

relief and security. As far as i know, if there was bail set, no one will post it.

We live in a small town and news travels fast, especially when everyone

knows everything about everyone.

Again thank you for letting me vent on here and reading all your comments

have definitely eased my adhd brain from overthinking. I appreciate

everyone.. im a people pleaser at heart so it killed me not to respond to

everyone but im doing this on my phone and theres only so much my

thumbs can take lols

UPDATE 3: Thank you all for the support and advice, i know i have been

m.i.a recently but its been an exhausting journey and trust me when i say

the wait was worth it. For those who are new i will link my original post and update.

Now these past few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster. Testing

relationships including my own, having to explain to my kids and reassure

them that none of this is or was their fault. My family, apart from a couple

of people pleasing peacemakers have been absolutely amazing. Not only

with the emotional support but also helping by including and encouraging

my kids to join their activities while me and my fiance sort out the poop

storm that has been going on since MiL got locked up.

My fiances maternal side of the family have been guilt bombing us, only 2

of them are on our side so we have sent the same auto response which reads

“Thank you for your consistent guilt trips, gaslighting and hypocrisy which

has shown us who you are. Because you would rather enable or make

excuses for someone who attempted to unalive the mother of her

grandkids instead of addressing how messed up that is is unacceptable. We

would like to formally tell you to never contact us or our kids. From this day

forward you are permanently uninvited to any and all celebrations going

forward and will be blocked on all platforms. This decision is for the benefit

of our emotional and mental wellbeing as we do not accept having toxic

people around our peace. Have a great life”

My SiL has been updating us with everyones reactions and it has been

hilarious to hear how many regretted supporting MiL and how many have

been asking SiL and BiL to pass on their disgust and disappointment. Again

we just laugh. My fiances paternal side have been supportive like my family

and have been checking in daily. They even came down for a week to help

us with the case as they have been on the other side of MiL violence. My FiL

even admitted that she stabbed his sister during a drunken rage and thats

why his sister hardly spends time with the family when she is around. All

this time i thought it was because she lived so far away, but now it makes

sense. She didnt press charges due to pressure from FiL and only got a

restraining order. FiL regrets advocating for her with some sense of loyalty

but seeing her do it to me in front of his grandkids opened his eyes and

would not let her get away with it again.

My MiL has had a psychological evaluation and turns out she has

undiagnosed bipolar disorder and that the alcohol abuse was her way of

dealing with it. Although she initially plead not guilty, after taking her

medication and doing therapy she has changed her plea to GUILTY and has

been sentenced to 14 years in jail with potential for parole. She has to go

through mandatory therapy and take her medication and is not allowed to

contact us or the kids. She had wrote a letter but my fiance burnt it without

opening it. He said that there is nothing she could say or do to warrant any

forgiveness, emotion or sympathy at this point. He is also going to regular

therapy to address his feelings of failing me and guilt on making excuses

for her actions for all these years. It’s helping but i can still see his internal

pain and i remind him every day that he is not to blame. I remind him that i

understand the importance of loyalty to family as i have gone through my

own family drama and remind him that blood does not entitle anyone to

treat us with disrespect or violence. Family is when people show up, for the

good, bad and ugly, its when people care about you and your feelings

through all diversity. This whole situation has shown us who really is there

for us as a family and who assumes they are.. we are now moving forward

as a family with healthy boundaries and are all look forward to the

upcoming wedding.

I hope everyone here has an amazing year because we sure as hell will be.

Thank you again fellow potatoes and also queen charlotte for creating a

space to share and relate to.

From the beginning, OP’s MIL showed a pattern of trying to control things that were never hers to control.

The children’s surname, OP’s place in the family, and even the way OP was viewed as a partner were treated like decisions MIL should have authority over.

The most concerning part was not a single rude comment, but the repeated effort to undermine OP’s role as the mother of her grandchildren and the person her son chose to build a life with.

The comment about OP’s father was especially cruel because MIL was not simply insulting her.

She targeted one of the deepest wounds OP carried.

OP had experienced an unimaginable situation as a teenager, being forced to make a heartbreaking medical decision during her father’s final moments.

Instead of showing compassion, MIL used that trauma as a weapon during an argument.

That moment revealed something important: this was never just about alcohol or one bad night.

Alcohol may have removed her filter, but it did not create those beliefs. The resentment, jealousy, and hostility were already there.

The attack with the knife changed the situation completely.

A drunken insult can sometimes be repaired with accountability, an apology, and changed behavior.

Charging at someone with a weapon, especially in front of children, crosses into a different category entirely.

OP and her fiancé were right to prioritize safety over keeping the peace.

One of the strongest parts of the update is OP’s fiancé finally recognizing the severity of what happened.

For years, he appears to have minimized his mother’s behavior because he was used to it.

When someone grows up around chaos, sometimes unhealthy behavior starts feeling normal.

His realization that he had been protecting his mother’s feelings over his partner’s safety was painful, but necessary.

Research on family violence consistently shows that patterns of aggression often involve more than one isolated incident.

A history of intimidation, threats, substance misuse, and refusing responsibility can create an unsafe environment for everyone involved, especially children witnessing these events.

The decision to pursue legal protection was not about revenge.

It was about creating distance from someone who had shown she could become dangerous.

OP’s children witnessed something frightening, and protecting their emotional safety matters just as much as protecting their physical safety.

The family members who defended MIL initially seemed focused on preserving the image of “family” rather than addressing the harm caused.

But family loyalty does not mean ignoring violence.

Real support means holding people accountable before their actions cause even greater damage.

The biggest lesson here is that forgiveness and access are two different things.

Someone can receive help, treatment, and a chance to change while still losing the privilege of being close to the people they hurt.

OP’s fiancé choosing to create a unified family name, stand beside his partner, and seek therapy shows a major shift.

He is no longer just reacting to his mother’s behavior; he is actively choosing the family he built.

At the end of the day, OP did not destroy a family. She stopped allowing one person’s behavior to control everyone else’s peace.

A healthy family is not built on who shares your blood. It is built on respect, safety, accountability, and the willingness to protect each other when things get difficult.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed OP should completely cut contact with the MIL

Classic-District-197 − NTA! Throw the whole MIL away! I’m glad your partner

agrees that she is not welcome to the wedding. I would make sure

everyone is aware of that including security. If she shows up, call the police.

NC at all with her and LC with anyone who wants to support her actions.

Drunk or not—not okay

LibraryMouse4321 − NTA. It’s the best thing to not have her anywhere in

your life, including your wedding. Protect yourself and your kids from her. I

also think you should have gone to the police. If you want you could tell

them that you don’t want to press charges, but want it on record in case

she tries something else in the future.

Mazforever72 − You and the kids need to go no contact now. Block her on

everything. Get cameras because this is going to escalate.

Peachy-Owl − NTA but please go no contact immediately and go to the

police. This time, she stabbed your hubby. Next time, what if she does it

again and one of your kids tries to protect you? What if she gets mad at the

kids and gets a knife to scare them and ends up stabbing one of your kids?

These commenters viewed the MIL’s actions as an attempted attack

Lady_Mew − You need to tell your future hubby that she tried to m__der

you. If he hadn't stepped in front of that hunting knife you would be dead.

He would have had to raise his arms to protect you so she was aiming for

your head/neck area.

I would go to the cops yourself to find out if you can press charges for

attempted m__der even though you weren't hurt. Even if you can't at least

it will be on record so you can get a restraining order in the future. You

need to be proactive in protecting yourself.

Andromeda081 − NTA. Block anyone telling you you’re wrong; send them

one last text saying “if you’re fine with a crazed women stabbing you in

front of your kids, you can have that in your own life, but none of you will

be part of mine. Don’t come to my wedding” then BLOCK. She could have

f__king killed you.

Fill out that police report and get a restraining order, because she will keep

contacting you. There have been 0 repercussions for her behavior,

including people actually defending this insanity, and that’s why she is the

f__king monster that she is.

If you want to be (too) kind, which she doesn’t deserve, you can always tell

the police that you personally don’t want to press charges (though I think

you should, and I would) — but that you need this documented for a

restraining order. If they chose to investigate, that’s out of your hands.

Protect you and yours.

She tried to harm you, already harmed her son, and could harm your kids.

Tell their schools, sitters, & doctors in case she starts stalking them or

trying to see them in public. This is incredibly serious.

Slow-Try8738 − Just discuss this extensively with your partner and file a

police complaint girl. Your kids saw her charging at you with a knife. She is

cuckoo but what example are you setting for the kids?

Scary-Alternative-11 − How is it even a question? !?! No, NTAH! ! That

woman fully tried to k__l you! Hell, if I were you, I would move and never

give anyone my address because I doubt this is over.

These commenters felt reconciliation was impossible after such a dangerous act and believed the MIL should face serious consequences

CeramicSavage − She tried to k__l you! !! There is no reconciliation even if

she "reflects" on her actions. It would be fake. She will try to k__l you again.

Nta UpdateMe

Miners-Not-Minors − This is bat s__t bonkers. How could ANYONE not be on

your side? Your MIL should go to prison.

A family conflict that started with years of disrespect reached an unimaginable breaking point when a mother-in-law’s jealousy turned into a dangerous confrontation.

The OP spent years trying to keep the peace, but after her MIL attacked her and traumatized her children, boundaries became unavoidable.

Many supported her decision to protect her family, while others questioned whether the situation could have been handled differently.

After legal action and painful revelations, the family finally moved toward healing.

Was cutting contact the only choice, or should forgiveness have been considered? Share your thoughts below!
