MIL Forgets Where Her Daughter-In-Law’s Family Lives, Then Turns Herself Into The Victim

in Social Issues

After 11 years of marriage, OP thought she had learned how to handle her emotionally immature MIL.

Their relationship had always been difficult, especially because OP’s husband chose independence instead of following the family’s pattern of being deeply enmeshed.

During a Christmas gathering, a small misunderstanding about where OP’s family lived turned into another major conflict.

Instead of resolving it, MIL withdrew for hours, later claiming OP was the one who behaved badly.

Now OP is questioning whether there is any way to repair a relationship where every disagreement ends with MIL becoming the victim.

'I ruined Christmas by correcting my MIL about where my family is from?'

My MIL is emotionally immature, and I've had a strained relationship with

her the majority of the 11 years my husband and I have been together. He's

the oldest and "black sheep" of the family because he chose to not be

enmeshed with his family, like his brothers did. Anyways, my in-laws were

celebrating Christmas this past weekend, and the men and children were

all in the basement. I was sitting around with my MIL and SILs, and MIL

asked if my parents were going to Winnipeg for Christmas. My parents

lived in Brandon, Manitoba, prior to moving to Alberta 3 years ago to be

close to us. My brother still lives in Brandon. My sister lives in rural

Manitoba, near the farm we were all raised on, which is no where near

Winnipeg. I have corrected her many times over the years that we are

visiting Manitoba/Brandon. But this time, when I said "I don't have family in

Winnipeg", she scoffed, said she meant Manitoba, and then left to go to

the basement, where she stayed for the next 2 hours until literally

everyone else came upstairs. I tried to check in with her and ask if we were

okay, to which she said I need to have grace with her when she makes a

mistake. I've been in the family 11 years and she can't even bother to

remember that my family is not from Winnipeg. She continued to avoid me

and freeze me out, and we ended up leaving early the next day because I

wasn't feeling well (from all the anxiety she induced in me). Now we're

receiving emails with her side of the story outlining how awfully I behaved,

and that "everyone was looking forward to celebrating Christmas together".

I just feel so done. I can't talk to her, she's always the innocent victim who's

so hard done by. We're already low contact, but after years of this s__t and

being called the crazy one, I just don't even know where to go from here.

It is exhausting when a relationship repeatedly turns small misunderstandings into major emotional conflicts.

Many people can tolerate mistakes from family members, but what becomes painful is when the mistake itself is not the issue, the reaction afterward becomes the real problem.

In this situation, OP was not upset because MIL forgot a geographic detail. People forget things.

Families move, circumstances change, and nobody expects someone to remember every detail perfectly.

The hurt came from the pattern behind it: OP had corrected this information repeatedly, MIL reacted defensively when corrected, withdrew for hours, and then later reframed the situation as if OP had caused the conflict.

That leaves OP in the position of having to defend herself instead of enjoying time with family.

There is also a common dynamic in emotionally immature relationships where one person experiences any correction or disappointment as a personal attack.

Instead of thinking, “I got that wrong,” they may interpret it as, “You are criticizing me,” which can trigger defensiveness, withdrawal, or a victim response.

The other person then ends up managing their emotions and questioning whether they were allowed to be hurt in the first place.

That framework helps explain why OP feels so defeated.

The argument is no longer about Winnipeg or Manitoba.

It is about a repeated cycle: MIL feels hurt, OP tries to repair things, MIL positions herself as the injured party, and OP ends up carrying the emotional responsibility for everyone’s comfort.

One important distinction is that having grace for someone’s mistakes does not mean accepting every reaction that follows.

Grace can look like saying, “I understand you forgot.”

It does not require saying, “I accept being punished, ignored, or blamed because you felt embarrassed.”

OP may not be able to change MIL’s perspective, especially if MIL has spent years seeing herself as the wronged person.

The more realistic goal may be changing OP’s own participation in the cycle.

That could mean fewer attempts to convince MIL, fewer explanations, and less emotional energy spent proving intentions.

A low-contact relationship sometimes works best when expectations are realistic.

Not every family relationship can become warm and mutually understanding.

Sometimes the healthiest version is a polite relationship with clear limits.

OP is allowed to be tired. Wanting basic kindness, accountability, and emotional safety is not asking for perfection.

It is asking for a relationship where one person’s feelings do not constantly erase the other person’s experience.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters agreed that OP had already shown patience for years and MIL should not demand endless grace while refusing to correct her own behavior

No-Background9317 − You did give her grace. Ask her how exactly should

you gracefully correct her the next time since it's been over a decade & you

still don't know how to properly do it? It's easier for her to pretend to not

remember than it is for you to be graceful in correcting her so just say it. Get it out. She's being a baby.

Rad1PhysCa3 − Tell her you did give her grace… the first dozens of times

she got it wrong before over the years. You could play tit for tat here - if

she wants to play the victim, play it right back. Cry and whine about how

she doesn’t even care to remember where you and your family are from, despite multiple reminders.

Ohhh, the blatant disrespect she’s shown me for years now! She doesn’t

love me! Woe is me! Or just ignore her and her flying monkeys and tell your

partner they better start correcting their own mother when she is rude like

this or they should expect worsening drama in the future. You’ve reached the end of your very extensive grace rope.

wicket-wally − I would respond with logic. “ I have corrected her for years

now with her making the same mistake. I did not yell or insult her in

anyway. I don’t know why she’s taking it so personally compared to all the

other years I have corrected her the same way. Should I now just lie and say “yes they are going to Winnipeg?

Please help me understand this because it’s very confusing and you guys

seem to understand her reactions better”. Shine a light on it for her flying

monkeys. Deep down they probably see how ridiculous she is

Otherwise-Western-10 − Tell her she needs to extend you a little Grace

when you say something that upsets her. Or does Grace only go in 1 direction with her?

This group shared similar experiences with MILs who failed to remember important details about their lives

thebethness − I’m sorry. You’re not alone. After years of biting my tongue

one one issue after the next, my final straw with my mother-in-law was

discovering she didn’t have any clue how my last name was pronounced after I’d been with her son for 15 years.

I happen to discover this on a day she had already been pissing me off for

12 straight hours and I lost my s__t. I can assure you, four years later and

still together, she probably has no idea where my family is from either.

Soregular − It's too bad she embarrassed herself and is now trying to make

it your fault. It's not your fault. I remember a gathering where my mother

was talking about my job (I was a NICU nurse) and my MIL looked shocked!

She said, out loud, that she didn't even know I had a job. I had been married to her son for 5 years.

She made herself look out of touch and stupid AND glared at me all night. So weird.

undertherexxx − My MIL once asked me what my job title was, to which I

told her, “Marketing Coordinator and Social Media Specialist. ” She then

said, “oh okay, well, I’ll just tell people you’re a graphic designer then. ” It’s

frustrating, it’s double frustrating when you correct them and they’re

offended. As if it’s not offensive they can’t remember substantial details about your life.

I stopped caring about how she portrays me, it’s not worth the energy.

These users believed MIL’s mistake was avoidable and suggested she was either careless, intentionally dismissive, or unwilling to admit she was wrong

skerrols − She created this problemo herself because Winnipeg is the only

place she knows in Manitoba. And to her Manitoba = Winnipeg. People this

stupid unfortunately are easily offended when their ignorance becomes

evident, and then it’s either fake news or your fault somehow.

Green_Plan4291 − I had an awful MIL too, and I told my ex that if he didn’t

stand up for me when she made herself the victim or made crappy

comments to me, I wouldn’t go over to her house any more. I stopped

going over, and was much happier not seeing her crabby face.

I still divorced him due to being a huge mama’s boy, abusive, and a cheater.

alglaz − So she corrected her own mistake. Because she actually knew they weren’t from Winnipeg?

OP spent years trying to maintain peace, but one small misunderstanding became another example of a much bigger pattern: feeling unheard, blamed, and forced to manage someone else’s emotions.

While MIL says she wanted grace for a mistake, OP seems hurt less by the Winnipeg comment itself and more by the shutdown, avoidance, and later retelling that painted her as the problem.

Do you think OP should continue trying to repair this relationship, or is stepping back the healthiest choice after years of the same cycle?

How would you handle a family member who always becomes the victim? Share your thoughts below!
