MIL Walks Out of Dinner After Rejecting Homemade Meal, Then Complains About Being Treated Poorly

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Hosting family can be a wonderful experience, especially when you are looking forward to spending quality time together.

But sometimes, one unexpected decision can make you question whether your kindness was taken for granted.

OP had prepared a special dinner from scratch after confirming the meal plans with her visiting relatives.

She thought everything was going smoothly until one family member decided they were unhappy with something small.

What happened next shocked OP because it was not just about the food, but about the way her effort was treated.

Years later, she still remembers the moment and wonders if she was wrong for holding onto that boundary.

Scroll down to see what happened that night.

Woman prepares a homemade dinner for her visiting in-laws

MIL Walks Out of Dinner After Rejecting Homemade Meal, Then Complains About Being Treated Poorly
not the actual photo

'Never again will I cook for my MIL after she did this?'

This is a tale of audacity, flabbergasting gall and the biggest lack of self

awareness I have witnessed in my 23 years of life. I made this reddit

account just to share the story.

In the past, mother-in-law (we'll call her Kathy) and I have a little history of

pushing each other's buttons but nothing too major so when she said she

was coming for a visit, my hubby and I were both excited. She was coming

from my husband's home state with 9-year-old BIL (we'll name him Steven),

16-year-old SIL (we'll call her Lily), and her mother (my hubby's Grandma). I

called Kathy the day before to confirm they were planning on eating dinner

with us the night of their arrival. She confirmed. I then asked if chili and

cornbread sound good to her since that was what I had planned to make

for dinner. She said they loved my chili and cornbread and they would enjoy

that. It's what I made last time she came so I knew it was a safe bet. When

they arrived the next day, the meal was fresh and hot, all made from

scratch and just how they liked it. When we sat down to family dinner, I

noticed Kathy only put a few tablespoons of chili in her bowl. It struck me

as odd because I had spoken to her on the phone soon before they arrived

and she declared she was starving! I ignored this and went on enjoying my

own meal. (It was really good btw:) A few minutes in, Steven (who is

autistic) noticed the bottom of his corn bread was slightly more brown at

the bottom than the top. I explained to him it was ok and that's what

happens when you bake in cast iron. He refused to eat another bite.

Instead of Kathy correcting her son or figuring out what he would eat, she

told him it's ok, and they'll just go get burger king. She immediately got up

and asked who wanted to go. Grandma and Lily both said they were

coming, got up and followed Kathy out the door, leaving their dinner

unfinished on the table. To add insult to injury, THEY BROUGHT THE FOOD

BACK AND ATE IT IN FRONT OF US! Hubby and I stared at each other in

disbelief, too uncomfortable to say anything because of the baffling nature

of the situation. We couldn't even be mad, we were too crippled with

secondhand embarrassment. There would have been no issue had they

waited until after dinner was over to go out and get Steven something he

liked better, it was the fact that they all left in the middle of dinner and

came back with meals and drinks! Not just for Steven, for ALL of them!

When we had a moment alone, my husband profusely apologized on behalf

of his family, mortified by their disrespect. He said he understood if I never

offered to cook for them again he would never ask me. I never got an

apology from her even when hubby confronted her over the phone after

she stormed out of our house and went back home a day early (another bit

of nonsense for another post:) That was three years ago and I haven't

cooked for them since. It now gives me a petty little tingle whenever they

come visit and comment on their limited budget and how expensive going

out to eat is.. Hope the petty potatoes enjoyed this story as much as me

and hubby have learned to.

There is a special kind of disappointment that comes when someone ignores not only your effort, but also the kindness behind it.

A homemade meal is rarely just food.

It represents time, care, planning, and the desire to make someone feel welcomed.

For OP, the issue was never that her guests preferred fast food.

The painful part was watching family members dismiss something she created specifically for them without even considering how their actions would make her feel.

The emotional conflict in this story comes from the difference between intention and impact.

OP prepared dinner ahead of time, confirmed the meal with her mother-in-law, and made something she knew everyone enjoyed.

She was trying to create a warm family moment after their arrival.

Instead, when one child refused to eat because of a minor detail with the cornbread, the entire group abandoned the meal and returned with restaurant food, turning what should have been a family dinner into a moment where OP felt completely disregarded.

A different perspective is that this situation also reveals how family dynamics can sometimes create blind spots.

Kathy may have focused entirely on accommodating her child’s comfort, especially considering his autism and sensory sensitivities.

Supporting a child’s needs is important, but it does not require dismissing another person’s effort.

A more considerate approach could have been acknowledging the meal, helping Steven find something he could tolerate, and handling the situation privately instead of making OP feel like her hospitality was meaningless.

This perspective explains why OP’s reaction was not simply about chili and cornbread.

The dinner represented an attempt to reconnect with family.

When that effort was rejected without apology or acknowledgment, it created a deeper feeling of disrespect.

The later decision not to cook for them again was not necessarily revenge; it was a boundary formed after realizing her efforts were not being appreciated.

Family visits can be complicated because people often assume familiarity gives them permission to act casually.

However, being family should usually encourage more consideration, not less.

A relative’s home is still someone else’s space, and their effort deserves recognition.

Ultimately, OP’s story highlights a simple but important lesson: kindness should never be treated as an unlimited resource.

When someone repeatedly receives generosity without showing gratitude, the relationship can become unbalanced.

Sometimes stepping back is not about holding a grudge. It is about protecting the value of your own time, energy, and care.

A person can continue loving their family while deciding they no longer want to place themselves in situations where their kindness is taken for granted.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters shared stories of ungrateful in-laws disrespecting huge cooking efforts and causing them to stop cooking for them

Doggoagogo − Oof. I feel this. I made the meal of my life one Christmas.

Jack and Coke glazed ham, a massive shrimp cocktail. I dry brined and deep

fried a turkey. Smoked a brisket. Made Mac and cheese and mashed

potatoes from scratch. Creamed spinach, braised cabbage, sauerkraut (FIL

loves it) and a chopped steakhouse salad. Scratch carrot cake and a French apple pie.

All the fixings. What does MIL do? She sends her son (my d(amn) husband

that night! ) out on Christmas Day, after watching me cook all this food plus

a full breakfast, out to Dominoes to get her pizza because that’s what she

felt like. It’s been 7 years and I haven’t so much a peeled a potato in her direction.

Husband was forgiven after much groveling and a trip to Tiffany’s.

Illustrious_Bobcat − My MIL once sat at my table, ate two large slices of my

homemade chicken pot pie, belched like a large man, and then loudly

announced that "your crust tastes like cardboard". Then picked herself up

and went outside to smoke a cigarette on my back patio. This was at least 8 years ago.

From that night forward, I made sure that every single dinner I cooked was

"too salty" or "too spicy" for the women who "can't stomach" anything but

unseasoned food. Before, I altered my recipes so she could enjoy them too.

But after her attitude, I went full tilt on my spice cabinet. She still asks

what I'm making every time she's in the house.

But it's nothing she ever wants/likes, so I don't understand why she bothers

anymore. She gets that cat-butthole face and huffs out of the kitchen when

she sees me open the spice cabinet. 🤣 Then she makes herself something

like a grilled cheese because she's too lazy to cook and blames it on how

"no one likes {her} cooking anymore! " And pointedly glares at her son.

My husband, to his credit, is fully aware of how much of a crazy, controlling,

n__rotic, narcissistic mess of a human being his mother is. So when she

behaves that way, he has no issue calling her out. Last time, he said "Sorry

Mom, I have taste buds and they like flavor, not boiled meat. Bobcat knows

how to use spices. " I was so proud.

She left. 🤣

Slightlysanemomof5 − Many years ago my In laws were visiting from half

way across country to see new baby . I grilled 5 very large steaks for 4

adults and a toddler. Also had baked potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls

( cake for dessert). Brought steaks to table MIL and FIL each took 2 and put

last steak on husband’s plate.

Told me I didn’t deserve to eat if I couldn’t cook enough food to feed

guests. Smiled ate sides, and when they arrived to visit next day ( stayed in

motel I would not let them smoke in the house), I had taken myself,

toddler, and newborn to my friend’s house. Didn’t return except for an

hour on last day of visit to say goodbye.

Never cooked for them again. Visits became less too. , I still am amazed

they each ate 3-4+ pounds of rib eye each. They left right after eating MIL

looked really sick. That made me feel better marginally. Your in laws are jerks.

IDGAF_ANYMORE73 − My SIL and her family did this to us on boxing day. I

prepared fried chicken, honey soy chicken wings , plus we had ham and

sides and all the nibbles as well. They ate nothing and bought a bag of

grapes and some fruit and ate that instead. I was furious with all the effort I went to.

Then, to top it all off, they ghosted us. They were supposed to sleep over

but left sometime in the middle of the night. We woke up to their beds

empty. I have another story of how she absolutely lost her mind at my

hubby one year because we wouldn't do what she wanted and thought it

was ok to verbally abuse my husband.

We went NC after that.

These Redditors described being hurt after family members rejected homemade meals despite their time, effort, and care

Historical-Chip-5274 − A few years ago, my husband and I would stay with

my inlaws for holidays, and the deal was we would stay there for free, but

one day during the stay, I would cook dinner for everyone. Sounds fair

except that my inlaws and my bil are picky eaters.

MIL won't eat fish, chicken with bones, and meat not cooked to a crisp, bil

only eats chicken ,fil will only eat hamburgers, spaghetti and hamburger

helper. That night, I went all out a chicken cassarole , Greenbeans with ham

, baked macaroni. That night, as soon as food was served, my husband and

everyone had a plate at eating and liked it!

! But my mil came in ignoring the food and went outside to grill her own

chicken. After she went outside, my bil and fil followed her, leaving there

unfinished food for me to clean up. After my husband confronted them,

they said that I made her sad because I told them I was cooking chicken,

and we know my mil loves grilled chicken. No apologies .

I never cooked for these ungrateful jerks again.

NapalmSesameSeeds − Unlocked memory of a Thanksgiving not so thank

full One Thanksgiving before we got married, we both lived together a

couple away for college. We went to go spend it with his family since my

family doesn't celebrate. We were the youngest(and most broke bc of

college) volunteered to cook. Mostly me but hubby assisted in everything.

We got up that morning, everybody was in MIL home just hanging out. My

hubby and I went to the store & and bought everything, including alcohol

which we just recently turned 21. We proceed to cook. We grilled chicken

drumsticks (bought a family pack). Made an eggplant lasagna (only my bil's

wife was vegetarian) sides, which I don't remember bc of how

unappreciated I felt.

We all ate and had a good time. There was probably the store bout pie we

bought, but again, I don't remember. It's also been years since this event.

BTW, his mom asked us if she should take that day off, and we said yes. She

told us hmm no, I'll take the day after off.

So that Thanksgiving day, she got home from work to all of us eating,

laughing & having a good time. We all said hi, and she looked to the food &

made a disgusted face. She went to the kitchen and cooked a defrosted

carne asada steak and cooked it. Shows that even before we cooked, she

had planned to make this Mexican food.

Must I also add that she is no mexican (I am) & always talks s__t about my

nationally. I never cooked for her again and had to endure a Mexican feast

at our wedding. I'm just happy it's been 3 years, NC. We are so done with her

Small-Charge-8807 − Ugh, in-laws are some of the weirdest people

sometimes. I used to make a 7-layer bean dip from scratch. A 9x13 pan

would cost about $25 (this was 20 years ago). The first time I made it,

everyone was super into it. The next year, they had so many requests that it

changed the flavor of the dish.

They didn’t like it, so instead of letting me take it back home, they fed it to

their dogs! I never made it for them again

This group celebrated petty revenge through refusing to cater to rude relatives and serving food without trying to please them

DueWerewolf1 − Love the FAFO stories. Here's mine - made homemade

pizza for now-ex and his male friends. One brought leftover Pizza Hut and

that is what everyone ate. They all ended up with food poisoning because

the pizza sat on the friend's desk all afternoon and spoiled. I was not very sympathetic.

NotNobody_Somebody − Nah, see, I'm petty-leaning. Every time they visit, I

would be making chili. Every. Single. Time. OP, your MIL is a pill.

Emotional_Builder_24 − Yessss we love a petty queen ! ! I wouldn’t cook for

them either! Btw I need that chilli recipe 😅

OP’s dinner wasn’t ruined because someone disliked chili or needed a different meal; it was the complete disregard for the effort, planning, and hospitality she offered.

She welcomed family into her home, prepared a meal they agreed to, and was met with a walkout followed by fast food eaten in front of her.

Some may argue a child’s needs should come first, especially with sensory issues, but many would say the adults handled the situation poorly.

Do you think OP was right to stop cooking for them, or should family have gotten another chance? Share your thoughts below!
