The release date for the much-anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has just been set. Slated as the second film in the revamped DCU, it will arrive in theaters roughly a year after the new David Corenswet’s Superman film, leading the new DC Universe.
According to Variety, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to premiere on June 26, 2026. The announcement comes shortly after the casting of Milly Alcock in the lead role. Alcock, known for her breakout performance in HBO’s House of the Dragon, will don the cape as the DCU’s newest Supergirl.
There’s buzz that Alcock might first appear as Kal-El‘s overprotective cousin in Superman or perhaps in a DCU series on Max, setting the stage for her solo cinematic adventure.
The film draws from the iconic comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It follows Kara Zor-El and her companion, Krypto the Superdog, as they journey through space. The narrative propels Supergirl beyond Earth’s bounds, seeking solace from living in the towering shadow of her cousin, Superman. Along the way, she teams up with Ruthye, an alien woman determined to avenge her father’s death.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was unveiled by James Gunn and DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran in early 2023. The project later welcomed Ana Nogueira as its screenwriter and Craig Gillespie, known for his work on Cruella as director.
Gunn has expressed enthusiasm for Alcock’s casting since her brilliant performance in House of the Dragon caught his eye.
“Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I mentioned to Peter [Safran] for this role, well over a year ago, after only reading the comics. Watching House of the Dragon, I felt she embodied the edge, grace, and authenticity we wanted for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes,” Gunn shared online following the casting announcement.
Milly Alcock will be the third Supergirl to have appeared on the big screen, after Helen Slater in the 1984 Supergirl film and Sasha Calle in The Flash. On television, Laura Vandervoort took on the role in Smallville, and Melissa Benoist starred in the Arrowverse’s Supergirl series.
Recently, James Gunn also revealed his official David Corenswet’s Superman costume for the upcoming Man of Steel movie. With Supergirl making her DCU debut in Jun 2026, we might still have to wait a while to see Corenswet’s Man of Steel and Alcock’s Kara Zor-El team up together on the big screen, but it is certainly something fans can eagerly anticipate.
