Mom Leaves Toddler Home For One Dinner, But Her In-Laws Act Like She Committed A Crime

OP wanted one simple thing: to attend an important family event as herself, not just as a parent managing a toddler.

When she and her husband decided to leave their nearly 2-year-old at home with a trusted babysitter for an intimate restaurant dinner, she thought it was the responsible choice.

Instead, the first reaction from her in-laws was disappointment and confusion over where the child was.

What should have been a chance for OP to relax and support the engaged couple quickly became another reminder of a painful family dynamic where she feels valued mainly because she is the mother of their grandchild.

Mother leaves her toddler home for a special family dinner

not the actual photo

'We got a sitter so our toddler wouldn’t terrorize the restaurant and disappointed everyone?'

We were invited to BIL’s engagement dinner at a nice restaurant. It was an

intimate sit down meal with lots of glass, tight spaces and it was scheduled

to be over two hours long. Our LO is almost 2 and has about a 45 minute

restaurant limit before she wants to explode. We didn’t want to risk having

to leave early or stress about entertaining her, so we asked my mom to

babysit so we could actually be present and celebrate the couple.. We walk

in to looks of horror.. MIL: “Where’s LO?!”. Me: “She’s at home with my

mom.”. MIL: “She’s not here?!”. Me: “No, she wouldn’t have done well in a nice restaurant with all the glass.”

Cue an entire evening of little comments about how much they missed LO

and DH and I reiterating that she would have really struggled in that

environment. People did eventually seem to get it by the end of the night, but the initial interrogation was so off putting.

What they didn’t know is that I had kidney stone surgery the day before. I

chose not to share it because I wasn’t in the mood for invasive questions. I

was holding it together, sitting through dinner in a decent amount of discomfort, just so we could be there for BIL and his fiancée.

It was frustrating because historically I have felt like they only see me as

the vessel who brought LO into the family, never quite enough on my own.

I am LC with my MIL because of her cruelty when I was postpartum. That

has made family dynamics difficult and I was looking forward to the

opportunity to show up as myself without needing to wrangle my toddler.

Their inital reaction made me feel like that's all I'm good for.

Sometimes the smallest family interaction hurts because it confirms a fear that has been quietly building for years.

This mother made an ordinary parenting decision: she knew her almost-two-year-old could tolerate restaurants for roughly 45 minutes, while the engagement dinner would last more than two hours in a crowded space filled with glass.

Leaving the toddler with a trusted grandmother allowed both parents to celebrate the engaged couple without spending the evening managing an increasingly restless child.

Yet the first reaction they received was not “It’s nice to see you.” It was essentially, “Where is the child?”

That distinction explains why the questioning landed so badly. Her relatives may simply have been disappointed because they love and miss the toddler.

In isolation, those comments could be harmless.

But this mother carries a history of postpartum cruelty from her MIL and already feels that her value within the family became attached to producing their grandchild.

Repeated remarks about the absent toddler therefore touched something much deeper than disagreement over childcare.

There is also another perspective worth considering. Leaving the child home was not excluding her from a family occasion.

It was responsive parenting. The parents understood their toddler’s developmental limits and chose an environment better suited to her.

Ironically, had they brought an exhausted, restless two-year-old who disrupted dinner, they might have faced criticism for that decision instead.

That perspective feels particularly relevant because nobody at dinner knew she had undergone kidney-stone surgery the previous day.

She was sitting there in physical discomfort because she wanted to support her brother-in-law and his fiancée as herself, not simply appear as the person accompanying the family’s grandchild.

The initial interrogation unintentionally made that effort feel invisible.

The healthiest response may be to resist over-explaining future parenting choices. “She’s with Grandma tonight” is already a complete answer.

Her husband can also take responsibility for shutting down repeated comments from his relatives rather than leaving his wife to continually justify reasonable decisions.

Grandparents are allowed to miss a beloved toddler.

But parents are also allowed to attend adult occasions without bringing their child, and mothers deserve relationships in which their presence has value independent of motherhood.

Perhaps that is the real issue here. She did not need everyone to agree with the babysitting decision.

She needed to feel that when she walked through the door without her daughter, the family was still glad that she had come.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters supported OP’s choice and suggested ignoring criticism about leaving the child at home

JaeJames138 − You need to master the phrase, "You'll be okay. " Every

complaint, comment, etc. Just look at the commentor, smile, and say,

"You'll be okay. " Then turn away and talk to someone else. Every single

time. Drives people nuts and shuts them up.

Gold-Sherbert-7550 − Everybody else including the waitstaff was thanking you in their heads.

Brit_in_usa1 − Your husband should’ve shut it down with something along

the lines of “This evening is about BIL and future spouse, NOT about LO. ”

These commenters sympathized with OP’s difficult recovery and criticized relatives for being insensitive about her situation

MagpieSkies − Oh hun! I have kidney stones, and have had surgeries for

them as well! Your trooper you! My inlaws pulled that s__t too. We went

across country for a cousins wedding, and thankfully my Dad lived kind of near. So we made it a visit to him as well.

The wedding was at a resort hotel and so we left our 8 month old with my

dad and had our first weekend away from him! His family would not shut up about how we should have brought him.

Like it would have been so easy to travel with all his s__t, and then basically

just be parents the whole weekend while working out loads of money for

this fancy hotel. On top of it, the ONE morning we got to sleep in as

parents they were at our door asking for charging cables.

Why does producing a baby make family so self centered and entitled? Like

do they not remember how much work tiny disregulated humans are? !

That maybe, just MAYBE we would like to enjoy ourselves as adults every

now and then? Hugs hun. Hope your stones stay small and pass easy in the future.

lemongrenade − You’re already braver than me. Absolutely zero fuckin

percent I’m going out to that the day after surgery!

Rhodin265 − You may be upset now, but honestly, knowing they don’t care

is a bit freeing.  You don’t have to care back.  They’d better hope DH is good at gift-giving and card writing.

These commenters blamed MIL’s behavior for creating stress and encouraged OP to maintain stronger boundaries

JoyReader0 − Ask your hubby to de-snide his parents. Was he just sitting

there while they pecked at both of you? Shame on him and them, if so. You

made an effort to be present, they dumped on you for it, go back to LC and consider NC for you and your child.

Careless-Image-885 − Seems like she was just enjoying harassing you. Her

focus should have only been on the engagement.

Aurora3112 − OP, you did right here. After reading why you are LC with

MIL, I might be looking too much into the situation, but I think the

questions about LO are a bit more n__arious than just “We miss her”.

I have a suspicion that MIL wanted you to bring LO, so when LO, inevitably

started getting into a temper, she could weaponise that and put it on you

as a “Bad Mother who can’t control her child, in a nice restaurant and it spoiled BIL’s engagement News”.

Again, I may be looking too much into it, but that’s the feeling I’m getting

here with MIL. I hope you enjoyed the meal and you recover quickly from your surgery. Best wishes to you and your family 🙏🏻

These commenters noted that bringing a young child could have created more criticism and made the event harder for everyone

IYFS88 − And if your child had been there and gotten into the trouble spots

you predicted, they might have been annoyed and judged you for bringing

a toddler to a nice restaurant. You can’t win. Hope you were able to enjoy yourself even a little bit.

And no matter what you’re not just a vessel even if this bunch of jerks has

made you feel that way. I hope your surgery recovery goes well!

klsprinkle − My 6 year old and 4 year old are very well behaved in any

restaurant sitting. I wouldn’t have brought them because it’s an adult

celebration. It’s about the couple getting engaged not how cute kids are.

OP’s decision was not about excluding her child from a family event.

It was about recognizing her toddler’s limits and choosing to be fully present for the couple being celebrated.

Instead of spending the evening managing a restless two-year-old in a fragile, formal setting, OP arranged childcare and showed up as herself.

The hurt came from the reaction afterward, especially feeling like her value was reduced to being LO’s mother rather than being seen as an individual.

Do you think the family’s reaction was unfair, or were they simply disappointed because they wanted to see LO?
