Mom Wonders If She Was A Jerk For Accidentally Letting Her Sister’s Friends Think She Have A “Crunchy Vegan Baby”

Sometimes, all it takes is a shrug to spark teenage chaos. One mom thought she was enjoying a normal meal with her baby when a group of her sister’s teenage friends decided to label her a “crunchy vegan mom” — the kind social media loves to ridicule.

After offering her six-month-old daughter a taste of tofu and nursing her during dinner, she casually responded to a teen’s question about veganism. What followed? A full-blown misunderstanding, some serious Gen Z judgment, and a family fight that ended in ribs and regret. Ready for the full saga? Let’s unravel the tofu-fueled drama.

Mom Wonders If She Was A Jerk For Accidentally Letting Her Sister's Friends Think She Have A "Crunchy Vegan Baby"

One mom shared on Reddit how a misunderstanding with her sister’s friends led to accusations of raising a “crunchy vegan baby”

'Aita For Accidentally Letting My Sisters Friends I Have A 'Crunchy Vegan Baby'?'

ETA: AITA For accidentally letting my sisters friends **think** I have a 'crunchy vegan baby'?. To preface: I do NOT have a crunchy vegan baby and I think this is mostly a misunderstanding. My daughter is six months old and breastfed.

I am vegan, my husband isn't, and our toddler is vegetarian/vegan-ish (he doesn't like animal dairy but will ravish eggs). We don't cook meat in the home, although my husband eats it out of the home, and our toddler isn't a fan.

Before anyone jumps on my ass he has been introduced to it because his dad eats it. He just prefers fries. (Same, kid). Anyway, I took my daughter to my parents house about a week ago. My mom is also vegan so we were eating our tofu and rice.

My daughter has just started solids so she was also going ham on my plate. My parents dog ate more than I did. My younger sister (15) had her friends over. They were having burgers or something and watching me with my daughter. After I ate I nursed her and one asked if I was vegan.

I said yes, she got this weird kinda look, and asked if my baby was going to be vegan. I just kinda shrugged because, you know, she could be a dairy hating fry fiend like her brother or a cheese-aholic like her daddy. Maybe, maybe not.

My sisters friend nodded and spoke to me a little more before leaving.. I thought it was a little odd but shrugged it off. Teens are weird creatures sometimes. Anyway, unbeknownst to me, this teen had decided I was a crazy vegan 'crunchy' mom.

Theres a few tiktokers who are apparently stupid about their kids safety and happen to be breastfeeding vegans. Like yours truly. I thought all was well - my sister sent me a link on the importance of a balanced diet for kids among a few other bits and eventually I called her. I was like, what the hell?

And she started going on about how I was a bad mom. I told her to watch her mouth and she blew up and said I was the one with a 'crunchy vegan baby'.

So, turns out, her friends are all convinced my children are terribly abused by my veganism, and because she'd never seen my toddler eat meat it was clearly true.. I told her to calm the f**k down, explained my parenting, yada yada.

She them got mad because all her friends think I'm a terrible mom and I should have been clearer and not just shrugged her friends question off because I should have known what they would have assumed I meant. I think she's being dramatic. They were worried, wires got crossed, all is well.

She's still acting like its the worst thing in the world.. So, basically, aita for making a mistake and having my sisters friends think I've got a crunchy vegan baby? As a side note, my husband was feeling petty so he went and got ribs for lunch. Filmed little lady eating her first rib. I can now firmly say she will not be a vegan, vegetarian or anything of the sort. Happier than a kid on Christmas.

Vegan parenting comes with its fair share of scrutiny—but most of the time, the backlash doesn’t come from a pack of TikTok-surfing teens. In this case, a single offhand shrug was enough to ignite a wave of judgment, assumptions, and finger-pointing.

The heart of the issue is a communication gap between generations. “Adolescents today are often hyper-aware of online trends and controversies, but that awareness doesn’t always translate into nuanced thinking,” says parenting educator Dr. Deborah Gilboa, aka “Dr. G.”. If these teens have seen a viral video of a dangerous diet, they may project that image onto anyone who remotely fits the description.

But parenting is not a TikTok trend. The American Dietetic Association states that “well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, and childhood”. This mom isn’t depriving her children—she’s simply letting them explore food in a way that aligns with her lifestyle while keeping options open.

The bigger issue is how quickly misinformation can spread. Social media often treats nuance like an endangered species. As nutritionist Dr. Reed Mangels explains, “People often equate ‘vegan’ with ‘restricted,’ when in reality, a thoughtful approach can offer just as much variety and nutrition as any other diet”.

In this case, the mom’s biggest “crime” was underestimating how deeply teens internalize internet narratives. Her sister, caught between protecting her social reputation and understanding family nuance, panicked. But really, there was no emergency here—just a tofu misunderstanding, a TikTok echo chamber, and a baby with a very un-vegan appetite for ribs.

Users laughed off the teens’ assumptions, with one saying their parenting advice from a ten-minute chat is “worthless”

Particular_Title42 − Are you the AH because of something that ignorant teenagers think about something they have no actual knowledge of? Let me think on that a minute. No. NTA.

HolyGonzo − Gotta love parenting advice from non-parents who observed you for ten minutes. Such profound wisdom. NTA.

Leimana76 − NTA over 20 years ago my daughter started out vegetarian. I had decided she would be one until she could ask to try meat(she did at 5 and has eaten meat ever since). She was on the smaller side and her pediatrician was worried she was malnourished and threatened to call CPS on me.

She ran a blood panel on her and even went into the office on a Saturday to get the results. She called me and apologized profusely. My daughter’s nutritional panel was completely balanced.

My point is even Doctors are ignorant when it come to nutrition, so teenagers opinions and knowledge about that matter are absolutely worthless. Keep doing what is right for your family, and when in doubt seek professional guidance and advice.

Commenters said the teens’ opinions don’t matter, with one joking about their “scrambled brains” from social media

Ellejaek − Your baby can’t be vegan, she is literally drinking mammal milk. Secondly, it’s none of their business how you parent your children or what you feed them. NTA.

Mereadsalot − People you barely know and probably don’t give 2 shits about are judging you? Oh the horror. I would ask them how many cocktails their moms knocked back when they were pregnant because their brains are scrambled.

SpicyTurtle38 − NTA. Generally the opinions of 15 year olds shouldn’t be trusted and it’s unfortunate that your sister hasn’t learned that yet. She’s probably afraid to lose the social currency of being a righteous educator amongst her friends- she had a purpose to brag about and now she doesn’t. This is entirely about the teen social hierarchy and not about you at all. She’ll get over it when the next life-shattering drama happens.

Users called out unfair vegan stereotypes, with one noting a tragic vegan diet case might’ve fueled the teens’ fears

acrylicmole − Nta. Vegans get a bad rep because there are some rudely passionate vegans out there (but there are rudely passionate Christians and everyone else) but considering you haven’t pushed this on your husband and it sounds like you’re going to give your kid a choice you probably aren’t included. I’m sure the friends are putting you in the cult group unfairly.

Srartinganew_56 − There was a story about a child who died from a ridiculously restricted diet given by his vegan parents, so maybe that’s what they have heard of. If you are eating a well-balanced diet and supplement with B12, then you and your baby are fine. So far, he’s just a boobatarian! It’s not even a real issue till he’s over 1, and if he eats a variety of plant products, he’s fine.

Users said the sister’s meltdown is about her social cred, not the Redditor’s parenting, urging her to ignore the teen gossip

haunted-microwave − So while your nursing your baby and feeding your toddler you have to appease some random teenagers? No, NTA. They can keep their social media saturated attitudes out of the real world Jesus.

This mom didn’t set out to become a villain in some teen-fueled vegan drama. She fed her baby, answered a question, and got judged for it—all because of an internet-fueled misunderstanding. While her sister may be feeling embarrassed in front of her friends, the real takeaway here is that parenting isn’t a performance—and sometimes, toddlers just want ribs.

Should OP have been more careful with her words? Or is it time teens stop assuming everyone they meet is the next TikTok cautionary tale? Let us know what you think in the comments.
