According to Variety, Mortal Kombat 2 is slated for an IMAX release on October 24, 2025. This time around, the film will be a theatrical exclusive, a shift from the previous installment’s hybrid release on Max (formerly HBO Max) during the pandemic, where it topped the platform’s most-streamed titles of the year. Filming wrapped up this past January, yet fans only learned about a confirmed release date until now.
The original Mortal Kombat film, a reimagining of the iconic fantasy fighting video game by Ed Boon and John Tobias, launched in April 2021. It grossed $42 million domestically and $83 million globally, setting the stage for its sequel.
Mortal Kombat 2 will see the return of key cast members including Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.
The film also introduces new faces such as Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. With such a star-studded cast and a barrage of new fan-favorite characters from the game franchise, the Mortal Kombat sequel is promised to be a blockbuster.
Under the direction of Simon McQuoid and penned by Jeremy Slater, the sequel is produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid.
Lewis Tan has hinted that Mortal Kombat 2 will surpass its predecessor in scope and excitement. In an interview with ComicBook.com in 2022, Tan shared insights into the anticipation building around the sequel, fueled by the success of the first film.
They’re very happy with the movie, and obviously, it performed really well. It’s one of the most-viewed films of their Warner Bros. slate, even though it came out at the worst time ever possible. But no, we’re full steam ahead. And now, we have Ed Boon with us as well, so we got the stamp of approval from the legend himself. #2 is just going to be absolutely insane. Way bigger,” said Tan.
With such high expectations and a confirmed release date, Mortal Kombat 2 is gearing up to be a significant cinematic event in 2025, with a stacked cast, action-packed Kombat sequences, and legendary characters from our childhood coming into life.
