Mother-In-Law Tries To “Steal” Her Daughter-In-Law’s Bond After Years Of Ignoring Her

in Social Issues

When OP’s son married, she made a conscious choice: she would never become the stereotypical overbearing mother-in-law.

She admired her daughter-in-law, respected their marriage, and gave them space to build their own life.

For years, that relationship grew naturally.

Then OP’s MIL noticed the closeness between them and suddenly started pursuing the same connection.

What should have been a positive thing began feeling uncomfortable when MIL’s actions seemed less about bonding and more about proving she could “win” her granddaughter-in-law’s affection.

Mother-in-law feels protective of her daughter-in-law after noticing her own MIL is trying to create a strange family rivalry

Mother-In-Law Tries To “Steal” Her Daughter-In-Law’s Bond After Years Of Ignoring Her
not the actual photo

'I think my mother-in-law is trying to get a do-over with my own daughter-in-law?'

My son married 3 years ago and I respect his choice of wife, respect her

role as his wife, and I both love and adore her. She's awesome. In talking

with my own mother-in-law over these years, I always model what I would

have wanted in a mother-in-law. I speak respectfully of my daughter and

praise her every chance I get. I speak respectfully of my son's marriage as a whole. I do not gossip or interfere.

My MIL has noticed and has absolutely recognized she does not share the

same closeness with me that I share with this beautiful woman our son

married. So after 2.5 years of not giving a hoot about our new daughter, my

MIL has reached out on her own to form a bond with her. Ive had the

opportunity to witness my MIL in the company of my daughter-in-law just

once and she was over the top sickly sweet in a way she has never been to

me. She pretended, in my presence, that they were great friends and even

said to my DIL, "Can you send me the photos you took today? At least I

know YOU will always text me back!" And then she looked over her

shoulder at me, and the witch shot me a triumphant smug smile ... very

much a 'you better believe I'm going to steal her from you' vibe. She cant

leave anything nice alone. She has to get her dirty hands all over it. I feel so

protective of my DIL and I'm not sure how to handle this weird rivalry my MIL is instigating.

It can hurt in an unexpectedly deep way when someone turns a relationship you cherish into something that feels like a contest.

The mother in this story has spent years trying to create the kind of mother-in-law relationship she once wished she had herself.

Her affection for her daughter-in-law seems grounded in respect rather than possession: she praises her, supports the marriage, and deliberately avoids interfering.

That is precisely why her own MIL’s sudden behavior feels so unsettling.

What should have been a pleasant family connection suddenly carried an undercurrent of comparison, old resentment, and perhaps even revenge.

At the emotional center of the situation is not simply jealousy over who receives more texts.

The mother appears protective because she believes her MIL is using someone she loves to reopen an old wound between them.

The remark about knowing the DIL would “always text back,” followed by the smug look, made an otherwise harmless friendship feel performative.

Yet there is an important distinction: the MIL developing an independent bond with the younger woman is not inherently threatening.

The uncomfortable part is using that closeness as evidence of who is more valued.

A fresh perspective is that the greatest danger may not be the MIL “stealing” the daughter-in-law at all. It may be allowing an old two-person conflict to quietly become a three-person relationship.

The daughter-in-law has her own judgment, loyalties, and emotional boundaries.

Protecting her does not necessarily require shielding her from the grandmother; sometimes the stronger form of protection is refusing to make her responsible for a rivalry she did not create.

That framework changes how the MIL’s behavior can be approached.

The smug smile may have been provocative, but accepting the invitation to compete would reinforce the triangle.

The mother does not have to prove that her relationship with her DIL is deeper, nor does she need to expose every questionable motive.

What she has built with her daughter-in-law came from three years of consistent respect, and one exaggerated display of sweetness cannot erase that.

Perhaps the healthiest response is quiet confidence: protect the relationship by refusing to possess it.

Let the daughter-in-law form her own conclusions while keeping the same warmth, reliability, and dignity that created their closeness in the first place.

A genuine bond rarely needs defending through competition. The interesting question is whether others would ignore the MIL’s behavior or consider that silence an invitation for her to escalate.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters agreed MIL’s fake behavior will eventually be exposed as DIL notices the pattern

Alt_Desk − Yeah. .. Your D-I-L will see right through that bullshittery.

greenglossygalaxy − Trust me, let this happen. There is no way in hell she

can fake being a decent person for long. Your DIL will see her for what she is and she won’t be impressed.

Honest-Type-6656 − i’m also the daughter in law that my MIL has tried to

have a good relationship with vs her MIL trying to act the same after being the absolute worst to her.

Personally I see through the act her MIL puts on and I am civil because she’s

an old lady but keep my distance because i’ve heard from the whole family how she emotionally tortured my MIL.

Careless-Image-885 − She won't be able to keep up the facade indefinitely.

Give her time. She'll show DIL who she really is.

These commenters warned that MIL’s attempts to win over DIL may create tension but advised trusting DIL to recognize the family dynamic herself

bugslife707 − My brother recently got engaged and my mom is really trying

her hardest to get in with the fiance. She is the daughter my mom always

wanted. ...despite having two other daughters. She is putting on the same

act and it is making me sick to watch, but I know this girl isn't an i__ot and will realize it's all an act at some point.

It is unfortunate because it puts a strain on the ability for my sister and I to

bond with the new addition to our family. My mom is trying her best to keep the fiancé for herself and block us out.

BrazenDuck − Your son has seen how things are with your mil. Your dil can

see how she treats you with these little digs. She’s not fooling anyone, your

dil is being polite to her husband’s grandma, not making a new bestie.

TeenyTiny_BeanieToes − Just inform DIL of exactly who she is. Never hide

it from her. So she isn't shocked when your mil starts treating her the same way.

One-Pause3171 − Is your son aware of the dynamic you have with your MIL,

his grandmother? Don’t let this be a “woman’s thing. ” Maybe have a little

heart to heart with him about wanting to be supportive to both of them

and be a positive part of their lives. And then listen to what he has to say. Ultimately, tho, you cannot run anyone’s relationship for them.

And you should just assume that he and she see through grandma’s ploy.

She probably is coming across badly. Ignore her. Continue to do your best. They’ll notice.

These commenters encouraged OP to ignore MIL’s behavior and focus on maintaining a healthy relationship with DIL

Delicious_Essay_7564 − Just manage your own relationship and time with

DIL. When she makes snide remarks you can tell you “I’m so happy you’ve

chosen to have such a positive relationship with my DIL. It shows you have

grown and have capacity for change. Well done MIL! ” If that doesn’t work just hope MIL will die soon enough.

midnight_thoughts_13 − Leave it alone. I mean it. This won't ruin your

relationship with dil. It's annoying yeah, but it's a waste of effort. She will see who your mil is

These commenters praised OP’s restraint and suggested avoiding emotional reactions to MIL’s attempts to provoke her

MiserableRisk6798 − This is one of those Mel Robbins “Let Them”

moments. Just ignore your mil, she’s trying to get a rise out of you. Your

DIL will see things for what they are. Just keep being the awesome mil you

are. She’s clearly emotionally immature. A good book to understand

emotionally immature people is “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents”

RuNsonchocolatemilk − It would have taken every single ounce of my self

control not to say “ever think about WHY I don’t text you back? ” to my MIL

if she made that comment to me lol so well done OP on keeping your composure there!

FrostiePi − She couldn't get through one conversation without showing it

was to get to you. I think you are fine. That being said. My grandmother

disliked me. (Ultra religious, my mother was 18 and unmarried with me. )

Disliked my mother. (Similar reasons including affair babies) Absolutely frigging LOVED my husband.

This woman who barely hugged me my entire life, threw herself into a hug

with him the first time she met him so. . sit back and watch. They may actually form a very real and loving connection.

OP’s concern seems less about MIL building a relationship with her daughter-in-law and more about the feeling that MIL is turning relationships into a competition.

A healthy grandmother-in-law bond does not need to come at someone else’s expense, and a genuine connection is built through consistency, respect, and kindness, not comparisons or subtle jabs.

Do you think OP is right to be protective, or should she step back and let her DIL decide how she feels about MIL?

How would you handle a family member who tries to turn affection into a rivalry? Share your thoughts below!
