Neighbor Keeps Borrowing Everything, So Woman Stops Answering the Door Even When She’s Home

Helping someone occasionally is different from feeling like you always have to be available.

This Redditor says their neighbor began asking to borrow things more and more often over several months. At first, it seemed harmless, but eventually every knock at the door created anxiety because it usually meant another request. When the neighbor showed up one evening, the Redditor ignored the door despite being home.

After the neighbor pointed out that they knew someone was inside, the Redditor admitted they had chosen not to answer. The situation has since become awkward, leaving them questioning whether they should have handled the situation differently.

A neighbor feels guilty after ignoring repeated requests from someone who constantly borrows supplies

'AITH for not answering the door after my neighbor kept "borrowing" things?'

I've lived in the same apartment for about two years, and my next-door neighbor is friendly enough. We aren't friends, but we chat if we run into each other.

Over the last few months, they've started knocking on my door to borrow random stuff. It started with things like a phone charger or a screwdriver. No big deal.

Then it became laundry detergent, eggs, trash bags, batteries, tape, paper towels...

basically whenever they were out of something, they'd knock on my door first.

The weird part is they almost always brought the item back if it wasn't something disposable, so it's not like they were stealing from me.

It just got to the point where I'd hear a knock and immediately wonder what they needed this time.

Last weekend they knocked while I was home watching TV. I looked through the peephole, saw it was them, and just... didn't answer.

I honestly didn't feel like having another "Can I borrow..." conversation.

About twenty minutes later I got a text from them saying, "I know you're home, your TV is pretty loud.".

I felt awkward, so I admitted later that I'd seen them but just wanted a quiet evening to myself.

Now they've barely spoken to me, and another neighbor joked that I could've just taken thirty seconds to help someone out..

I don't think I did anything wrong, but I also wonder if I handled it badly. AITH?

Small acts of kindness often feel easy when they happen occasionally. The difficulty begins when generosity quietly turns into expectation.

Many people enjoy being the neighbor others can rely on, but that role can become exhausting when every knock at the door creates a feeling of obligation rather than connection. Sometimes the hardest boundary to set is not refusing a request, but allowing yourself to have no request at all.

In this situation, the neighbor was not necessarily acting maliciously. They returned borrowed items and may have simply viewed the relationship as a convenient exchange between people living nearby. However, the person opening the door experienced something different.

What started as occasional help became a pattern where the neighbor’s lack of preparation repeatedly became someone else’s responsibility. The frustration was not about a single charger or a carton of eggs.

It came from the accumulated feeling that home was no longer a place where the resident could relax without being interrupted by another favor. Choosing not to answer one knock was less about rejecting the neighbor and more about wanting control over personal time.

A different perspective is that this situation highlights how unclear boundaries can create misunderstandings. Some people naturally assume that if a person has helped many times before, they are comfortable continuing the arrangement.

The neighbor may not have realized that each request was adding emotional pressure because the previous interactions ended without a direct conversation.

Meanwhile, the resident avoided confrontation until the frustration reached the point of ignoring the door. Neither person was necessarily trying to create conflict, but the lack of communication allowed assumptions to grow. The neighbor assumed availability; the resident assumed refusal would be uncomfortable.

Psychologist Dr. Nedra Glover Tawwab, author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace, explains that boundaries are not acts of hostility but ways of communicating what people can realistically give while maintaining their own well-being. Without clear boundaries, people often become resentful because they continue agreeing to things they no longer want to do.

Similarly, psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner has written that many relationship conflicts develop because people avoid expressing small frustrations until they become much larger emotional issues. Honest communication early on can prevent resentment from replacing goodwill.

These ideas suggest that the real issue was not the unanswered door. The unanswered door was simply the first visible sign that the arrangement had become uncomfortable. A short, respectful conversation earlier, such as explaining that the borrowing had become frequent or suggesting they keep their own supplies, may have prevented the awkwardness.

Being a good neighbor does not mean being permanently available. Helping others is meaningful when it comes from choice rather than pressure.

A healthy community is built not only on generosity but also on respecting when someone needs privacy, rest, or a quiet evening without feeling guilty for it. Sometimes the kindest thing people can do for a relationship is make sure kindness remains voluntary.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters agreed the neighbors should have helped themselves instead of pressuring OP to provide assistance

life-is-satire − Why didn’t the other neighbor volunteer if they’re so eager?

TheLastWord63 − NTA. The other neighbor wanted you to help them out so they didn't have to. There was no joke involved.

rubyd1111 − There’s no law saying you have to open the door when someone knocks

and there’s no law saying you have to lend or give someone something just because they ask.

No is a word. And as far as the other neighbor, why didn’t they then do the lending if it’s such a big deal?

These Redditors supported setting firm boundaries and suggested simple ways to avoid unwanted requests

MaeEastx − NTA. You don't owe them an explanation, I would have just said " sorry, it wasn't a good time".

Maybe you should fight fire with fire. Knock on their door and ask if you can borrow their vacuum cleaner, some coffee, a saucepan etc.

cassowary32 − NTA. Next time they knock, send them directions to the nearest grocery store.

ButterscotchFit8175 − "Oh did you stop by? I was in the shower. Sorry I missed you. "

This group emphasized that repeated small favors can become exhausting and people must respect limits.

Anxious_Article_2680 − Nta. You can't keep bleeding by a thousand papercuts.

Former-Increase-9165 − That’s probably how that situation needed to happen, some people have no concept of boundaries,

These users defended OP’s right to privacy, saying no one is obligated to answer doors or lend belongings

RockyBear1508 − NTA! Don't ever admit anything. You could've left the tv on while you were out.

THIS is why my neighbors will never have my phone number. Just because someone knocks doesn't mean you have to open the door.

cwood0613 − With the price of eggs, in this economy?!?! NTA.

Do you think the tenant handled the situation fairly, or should she have simply explained her feelings sooner? How often is too often when borrowing from a neighbor? Share your thoughts below!
