Neighbors Flood Woman’s Pool, Then Demand To Use It For Their Kid’s Birthday

Neighbor disputes can start with something small and turn into a lasting source of tension, especially when one side refuses to accept responsibility for the damage they caused.

One homeowner found herself dealing with that after a family renting the house behind hers drained a large inflatable water slide and sent hundreds of gallons of dirty water rushing downhill into her yard and pool. The property owner stepped in, paid for the repairs, and apparently told the renters not to use another slide.

Months later, the same family returned with a new request that left the homeowner completely stunned. Scroll down to see why they insisted she now owed them a favor.

A homeowner is blamed for ruining a child’s birthday after refusing neighbors access to the pool

'I ruined their lives'

In May the people who rent the house behind mine had an inflatable bouncy water slide for their child’s birthday party.

That evening I was working on my backyard and they drained the slide, their yard sits higher than mine.

The water rushed down the hill, it washed out a section of my flower bed along the fence and washed it all straight into my pool.

It was about 400 gallons of water, dirt and muck. The renters we’re unapologetic and said ooops, we didn’t know the way would flow down hill

I called the owner of the house because I have known him his entire life, his mother owned the house previously and was a close friend.

He immediately sent a crew to fix everything.. Apparently he told his renters that they weren’t to have another water slide.

Fast forward to now and it’s their other kids birthday and they knock on my door

and say they want to use our pool for their son’s birthday party since WE got them banned from having another slide.

It’s just about 35-40 people, 50 tops, mostly their families but 20 or so of the guests would be children

and they would just take down a panel of MY fence to allow them to walk/run back

and forth from my yard to theirs, but they’d be sure to step around my flowers. Ummm, wtf?! No

But we OWE it to them because WE got them banned from having another bouncy water slide for their other child.

Still no!. We’re ruining their child’s birthday and ruining their lives. I’m still flabbergasted

One of the most difficult lessons in adult life is that someone else’s disappointment does not automatically become your responsibility.

People often feel guilty when they say no, especially if children are involved. Yet there is an important difference between refusing to solve a problem and creating the problem in the first place.

In this situation, the OP did neither. The consequences began when the renters ignored the impact of their own actions and continued with the expectation that someone else would absorb the cost.

The emotional conflict revolves around accountability. After the first birthday party, hundreds of gallons of dirty water and mud damaged the OP’s property and contaminated the pool. Rather than apologizing sincerely or helping resolve the situation, the renters dismissed it with an “oops.”

Their landlord, not the OP, decided to prohibit future water slides after paying for the repairs. Months later, instead of accepting that consequence, they reframed themselves as victims and presented the OP with an astonishing request: host a party of up to 50 people, including around 20 children, allow strangers through the yard by removing part of the fence, and accept all the liability that comes with an unsupervised pool.

A fresh perspective is that this is not simply entitlement. It reflects a common psychological tendency to externalize consequences. When people experience an unpleasant outcome, they often search for the nearest visible cause rather than the original one.

The renters focused on the phone call to the landlord because it was easier than acknowledging that their own carelessness and refusal to take responsibility prompted the landlord’s decision. Once that story was established, the OP became the convenient obstacle standing between them and another successful birthday party.

Psychologist Albert Bandura described how people sometimes disengage from personal responsibility by shifting blame onto others or minimizing the consequences of their own behavior.

These cognitive strategies allow individuals to protect their self-image, even when the evidence points toward their own choices as the source of the problem.

That framework helps explain why the renters genuinely seemed to believe the OP “owed” them access to a private pool. Accepting responsibility would require admitting that the ban resulted from their actions, not from the complaint itself. Blaming the neighbor preserves the belief that they were unfairly treated while avoiding the discomfort of self-reflection.

The practical answer remains simple: the OP was right to refuse. Beyond the obvious privacy concerns, inviting dozens of guests into a residential pool creates significant safety and legal risks. A single accident could have lifelong consequences.

Saying no did not ruin a child’s birthday or anyone’s life. It established a reasonable boundary after previous trust had already been broken. Sometimes the fairest response is also the shortest one: “I’m sorry, but my answer is no.” No further justification is required.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors suggested involving the landlord and strengthening security against possible retaliation

kmflushing − Call their landlord again.

WillaLane − We have cameras, security system, motion sensor lights, two large dogs and a dog door.

They’re trained to not eat food from people who aren’t us or our dog sitter.

We had left a message for the homeowner and he stopped by, he was telling us about some of the other problems he’s had with them.

The lady next door to them is in her late 80s and they have tried to take advantage of her but she’s sharp.

Anyway, their lease is up at the end of September and he’s not renewing it.

Big-Rule5269 − I would put up cameras as these seem to be vengeful,

entitled idiots that would do something destructive since you " ruined their lives. "

These commenters firmly rejected the idea that neighbors are entitled to someone else’s private pool

Ok-Brick6831 − Yeah, they have pools you can rent for parties. Mine ain’t one of them.

2mnydgs − So, your entitled neighbors want to use your pool, and your homeowner's insurance, for their party?

Too bad you didn't make them pay to clean your pool that one time when they Oopsed.

When you look up 'entitled' in the dictionary, bet you find their picture. No and again, no.

Tsmom16811 − My friend had an inground pool put in a few years ago. .. f. ..ton of money, new patio, landscaped and fenced.

Her name is Karen and yes she can be a bit of a Karen, but she likes things kept a certain way and can get pretty vocal about it.

The first thing her neighbor asked was if she could have her daughters 10th birthday in it in a few weeks.

I think the whole neighborhood heard her say 'no f. ..ing way am I going to let a bunch of kids in my new pool'. No one ever asked her...

These users said the neighbors lost privileges through their own reckless behavior

Born-Vermicelli-1757 − what are they talking about?

they got themselves banned from having another water slide by making it evident they dont know how to conduct themselves.

racincowboy9380 − I hate to say it but literally nothing surprises me anymore at the amount of entitlement some people have.

I’d tell them sure you can rent someone else’s pool for your kids party.

If you weren’t a dipshit and ruined my flowerbed and filled my pool with debris

you’d still have the opportunity to have a bounce house water slide for your other kids party.

This is 100 percent on you.

These Redditors described the neighbors as extremely entitled and potentially vindictive

dd97483 − your neighbors have no class, but extreme entitlement. ignore them if possible.

Apprehensive_Gap1055 − I would throw a pool party on that date and make a ruckus

Was the homeowner right to shut the request down immediately, or could there have been a safe compromise? And would anyone willingly let 20 children use their private pool after the previous backyard disaster?
