Neighbors Use Couple’s Yard as a Shortcut, Then Complain About the Dog Using Its Own Yard

Being generous with neighbors can make life easier for everyone, but generosity can become frustrating when the favor slowly starts turning into a list of demands. I think most people would feel differently about allowing access through their yard once the guests using it begin expecting the homeowner to change how that yard is used.

One Redditor ran into exactly that problem after buying a house with an unusual setup. The previous owners had allowed the neighbors to cross a small section of the backyard to reach a gate leading toward a nearby school, and the new owners initially agreed to continue the arrangement.

Things stayed peaceful until the neighbors started complaining about dog waste, dog urine, and even the appearance of a compost bin along their shortcut. Suddenly, a casual favor began feeling more like an entitlement. Scroll down to see why the OP started seriously considering putting a lock on the gate.

A homeowner grows frustrated when a neighbor using their yard path starts demanding control over their property

'Neighbor’s gate opens in our yard'

We bought our house earlier this year and are running into a mild conflict with our neighbor.

Our property backs up to a school behind us and there is a gate in our back fence that opens to the athletic field area and parking lots.

Our neighbor’s property does not connect to this fence line.

They had a deal with the previous owners of our house that they could use the back gate

and had a separate gate installed in their fence line that opens into our yard so they can use the back school gate.

They use this gate for their family and friends to cut through our yard and into their back gate.

They park at the school and cut through instead of driving around and through our subdivision.

They really only cut through the back corner of our yard and it’s maybe 15 feet gate to gate, so we have been super chill about it and said it...

But now our neighbor has been requesting we not let our dog poop back there because their family is tracking poop in their yard.

And to not let our dog pee back there.

And they think our compost bin is an eye sore and we should take it down.

All so their guests can have a more enjoyable walk into their yard… through my yard!!

I’ve ignored it up to this point, but am so tempted to slap a lock on that gate. What do I do?!?

A peaceful relationship with neighbors often depends on one simple idea: kindness should be appreciated, not assumed. Many conflicts begin when a person offers a small favor and the other person slowly starts treating that favor as a right. What starts as generosity can quietly turn into frustration when boundaries disappear.

In this situation, the OP originally showed considerable goodwill. The neighbor had an arrangement with the previous homeowners, but the OP and their family were not obligated to continue it.

Allowing another household and their guests to regularly walk through private property was already a significant accommodation. The conflict changed when the neighbor moved from asking for access to making demands about how the OP should use their own yard.

The emotional tension here is not really about dog waste or a compost bin. Those are just the visible issues. The deeper problem is that the neighbor appears to view the yard as part of their own convenient pathway.

From the OP’s perspective, they gave permission for access, not ownership or control. When someone receives ongoing kindness, they may sometimes forget that it is still a choice being offered.

A different perspective is that the neighbor may genuinely feel inconvenienced by the situation. If guests are frequently walking through the area, they may have become accustomed to a certain level of cleanliness and may believe their requests are reasonable.

However, the important distinction is that their convenience does not override the homeowner’s rights. A shared solution requires mutual respect, not one person adapting their entire lifestyle for another person’s benefit.

Research on personal boundaries shows why this type of conflict can feel surprisingly personal. Psychologist and author Dr. Henry Cloud, known for his work on boundaries, explains that healthy boundaries define what people are responsible for and what they are not responsible for.

Without clear limits, relationships can become unbalanced because one person begins expecting another person to manage their comfort.

This insight applies directly to the situation. The OP’s mistake was not being kind. The issue was that the original agreement may have lacked clear limits. Once access was granted without defined expectations, the neighbor began treating the arrangement as permanent and expandable.

A practical solution would be to have a calm conversation and reset the boundary. The OP could explain that occasional access was allowed as a courtesy, but that using the yard comes with accepting that it is a private space. If the neighbor cannot accept normal yard use, pets, or reasonable homeowner choices, then restricting access would be understandable.

The larger lesson is that generosity works best when both sides remember it is a gift. A neighbor can appreciate a shortcut without expecting someone else’s yard to become an extension of their own property. Being considerate does not mean surrendering control over your own home.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These users said the neighbors lost their access privilege and the gate should be locked

cruiser4319 − Remove or lock the gate and tell your neighbour they are no longer able to access your property. Entitled much, NFH?

fiestafan73 − "Our dog lives here. You don't. Since the walk isn't enjoyable for you, we will be locking the gate and not subjecting you to our yard any longer....

Tasty-Bee-8339 − They looked the gift-horse in the mouth. Lock the gate.

Top-Bit85 − You slap a lock on that gate. Sorry neighbor this just isn't working anymore!

These commenters warned that continued access could create serious liability risks.

Suspicious-Grand9781 − I'd stop access for liability reasons. If someone gets hurt, they'll quickly sue.

CestLaquoidarling − Tell them that is a weird way to say thank you but you’re glad they brought it up

because your insurance has told you to stop this because of liability so going forward your gate will be locked.

Bostonredsoxgirl − I wouldn't allow anyone in your yard. It's your property & you have dogs.

What if your dogs were outside & something happened. You should post a sign saying dogs in yard stay out.

I would for sure put a lock on the gate & maybe a camera back there.

This user jokingly suggested getting another dog instead of accommodating the neighbors

MiIlFlWi − Get another dog

These Redditors felt OP had already been accommodating and should stop entertaining new demands

Cute-Aardvark5291 − Polite conversation. That you are keeping the arrangement out of courtesy, and if the effort of keeping the arrangement

becomes onerous for you, it will stop. Then next time they ask you to do something in your yard, lock it.

JuanShagner − No more gate. You’ve been nothing but accommodating and now they have ridiculous special requests. It will never end. Shut it down.

Would you keep the shortcut open but ignore every request, or lock the gate after the first complaint about the dog? And if guests want a cleaner route, should they simply start using the street like everyone else?
