New Dad Spends Paternity Leave With His Older Son, Then His Wife Finally Breaks Down

The arrival of a new baby is supposed to be a time when both parents come together, but that becomes even more important when the birth is traumatic and the child faces serious medical challenges. In moments like these, support is not just about being present, but about knowing where your partner and newborn need you most.

The original poster (OP) gave birth after a life-threatening complication and is still recovering while their newborn remains in the NICU awaiting further treatment.

Although OP has no problem with her husband spending time with his older son, she felt abandoned when he spent an entire day on outings with him shortly after the birth instead of supporting her and their critically ill baby. Read on to see whether Reddit thought OP was unfairly criticizing his parenting or simply asking for support during a crisis.

A new mother recovering from a traumatic birth feels abandoned when her husband treats paternity leave like personal time

'AITA for telling my husband that paternity leave isn’t a holiday?'

I (30sF) gave birth to our son a few days ago. It was incredibly traumatic.

I had a severe postpartum haemorrhage, lost 1.8 litres of blood, and had emergency surgery to remove my placenta. I’m still recovering.

Our son was born with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and was admitted straight to the NICU.

He’ll likely need heart surgery, and we’ve since been told they’ve found another abnormality they’re investigating.

My husband has a son from a previous relationship (Greg).

I want to be clear that I have no issue with Greg meeting his little brother or spending time with his dad.

I’ve never asked him to choose between his children.

Two days after I gave birth, I thought Greg’s mum would bring him to meet the baby before taking him home.

Instead, my husband collected Greg and spent the entire day with him.

They went on the London Eye, had lunch, he had a beer, then went home to play Xbox until Greg was collected around 9pm.

During that day, my husband spent around 20 minutes with our newborn in the NICU and barely saw me.

My mum stayed with me on the postnatal ward, but she couldn’t come into the NICU,

so I was making my own way to see our son while recovering from major blood loss and surgery.

When I explained I wasn’t upset Greg had visited but that I hadn’t expected to be left alone all day while our baby was critically ill,

my husband became defensive. He said he enjoyed spending time with Greg and that he was “being a parent.”

I replied that I wasn’t saying he shouldn’t parent Greg.

I was saying I needed him to be a husband to me and a father to our newborn during what was a medical emergency.

When I later explained how serious my blood loss had been, his response was, “My sister lost 5.”

The next day I told him doctors had found another abnormality with our son’s heart. He complained nobody had told him.

I pointed out he’d already left because he’d only spent about 20 minutes in the NICU.

I’ve now been discharged, but our son is still in the NICU.

I’m exhausted and terrified to leave him, while my husband has again spent the morning taking Greg to the cinema.

I finally told him that paternity leave isn’t supposed to be a holiday and that I don’t feel supported.

I said if this is what his paternity leave looks like, I’d almost rather he went back to work because at least then I’d understand why I was doing everything...

He says I’m being unfair because he’s trying to balance both children. AITA?

The hardest moments in life often reveal what people truly need from the people closest to them. In this situation, the OP was not asking her husband to abandon his first child or choose one child over another. She was asking for support during an extraordinary medical crisis when she was physically recovering and their newborn was fighting for his health.

The emotional conflict is centered around competing roles. The husband appears to be trying to reassure his older son that he is still loved and important after the arrival of a new baby. That instinct is understandable, especially for a parent navigating blended-family dynamics. However, the OP was not objecting to Greg receiving attention.

Her pain came from feeling abandoned at the exact moment she needed her partner most. She had experienced a traumatic birth, significant blood loss, emergency surgery, and the fear of a critically ill newborn. In that situation, her husband’s presence was not simply “helping out.” It was emotional and practical support during a crisis.

A different perspective is that this argument is not really about paternity leave itself. It is about priorities and timing. Spending meaningful time with an older child can be valuable, but the early days after a traumatic delivery and NICU admission are unlike normal parenting situations.

The OP’s husband may have viewed the day with Greg as balancing both children, while the OP experienced it as him stepping away from an emergency that required both parents.

Psychologist Diana Fosha has written extensively about emotional connection and how people need to feel that their distress is recognized and responded to by those closest to them. When someone experiences a frightening event, validation and emotional presence can be essential parts of recovery. AEDP Institute

This insight is important because the OP’s complaint is not only about physical tasks. She is describing a feeling of being emotionally alone. Comparing her blood loss to his sister’s larger blood loss also misses the point.

Trauma is not measured by a competition of numbers. A person can survive a medical emergency and still need compassion afterward.

At the same time, the husband’s relationship with Greg matters. Children from previous relationships can sometimes feel displaced when a new baby arrives, and maintaining that bond is important.

His desire to be present for Greg is not wrong. The issue is whether he can recognize that supporting one child does not require withdrawing support from another child or from the child’s recovering mother.

The solution is not for him to stop being a father to Greg. It is for him to understand that this specific period requires a different level of involvement. A child going to the cinema or having a fun day with dad can happen again. A mother recovering from emergency surgery while her newborn is in intensive care cannot get those first days back.

The OP’s statement that she would almost rather he returned to work reflects how unsupported she feels, not that she truly wants him absent. She seems to be saying that a predictable absence would feel easier than having a partner physically present but emotionally unavailable.

The bigger lesson is that new parenthood is not only about dividing time equally between children. Sometimes fairness means recognizing when one situation requires more immediate attention.

A strong partnership means both people can acknowledge each other’s needs, especially when life becomes frightening and uncertain. In this case, the OP is not asking for perfection. She is asking not to face one of the hardest moments of her life alone.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors agreed OP’s medical crisis and NICU baby should be the husband’s top priority

theBMadking − NTA, the child in the NICU should definitely take priority, I'm sorry you have to deal with this all by yourself.

Remarkable-Intern-41 − NTA I think we understand why your husband and his ex didn't stay together. ..

Absolutely baffling behavior by your husband. He should be camped out in the hospital 24x7 or taking care of you and nothing else right now.

Greg sounds like he's not a literal toddler so he will understand his father needing to be there for his step mother and sibling for a few weeks.

If he doesn't now he certainly will when he's older. Your husband being actually dismissive and annoyed over these matters is infuriating.

These commenters criticized the husband’s lack of support and questioned his commitment as a partner

LurkingAtU − NTA. If his sister had lost 5 liters, she would be dead, as an average human has around that in their entire body.

I'm sorry you are going through all this alone. I understand that his other kid probably may feel insecure with the new baby coming, but now

IT'S NOT THE TIME to be doing all those things.

Your husband is a jerk and doesn't sound like that he understand how close he was of losing you both.

Jade-Dragon-2002 − NTA I wonder why his previous relationship failed. .. Are you ready for him to minimize you for the rest of your life?

None of your suffering will be enough for him to care, your struggles will be compared to other women in his life to make you feel smaller,

and your child's health will be less important to him than a fun day out with Greg. And he's not trying to balance both children.

You are healing and carrying the heartache of your newborn's NICU stay.

He's going out and playing with his well son. It's not "balancing" if he is missing critical medical reports.

Southern_Orange3744 − Nta - and he needs to a slap to his face.

You need to speak very clearly to him that he is abandoning you and your newborn son to s__ew around.

Your expectations do not end for his participation once you get home , or the love bug gets home . Info - is this why he's not with his other...

These Redditors suggested his behavior showed emotional detachment or an inability to handle serious situations

Hoistedonyrownpetard − NTA. This is breathtakingly insensitive, perhaps even cruel.

The most generous thing I can offer about your husband is that some people cannot tolerate worry and they act very detached as a defense mechanism.

What are you going to do with the knowledge that he doesn’t have your back in a crisis?

ItsReallyBright − NTA. It sounds like your partner is just trying to distract himself from a stressful situation

without thinking how you may need them there for your own comfort.

But the 'my sister lost 5' comment is really, really weird. Who tries to one-up someone's medical trauma?

Edit: I do know that that is a lethal amount of blood loss and that he is most likely lying. The point wasn't the number, it was the handwaiving.

These users felt his outings and distractions showed poor judgment during a family emergency

jetblakc − NTA, son could do without two trips to the movies in a week while you and your newborn are in the middle of a medical emergency.

Your husband sucks.

Tough_Tumbleweed_504 − Imagine going to watch Minions while your wife is recovering in hospital and your newborn awaits heart surgery… NTA.

AdysGrandma321 − NTA. Don't give your husband updates.

When he complains nobody told him, remind him he wouldn't need to be told if he was present to begin with.

Prepare yourself to be a single parent Thank you, friend, for the award

Was the husband avoiding fear through distraction, or simply refusing responsibility? How should parents balance siblings when one child suddenly requires intensive care?
