New Mom Cuts Off Parents After They Pin Her Down and Rip Her Breastfeeding Baby Away

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Becoming a new parent can make family support feel more important than ever, but help stops being helpful when it ignores boundaries and takes control away from the mother.

When relatives refuse to respect a parent’s decisions, the situation can become frightening rather than comforting.

The original poster (OP) says her mother became overly possessive of her newborn daughter and repeatedly interfered with feeding, soothing, and bonding.

During a short stay at her parents’ home, the conflict escalated when OP refused to hand over her crying baby.

She says both parents physically restrained her and took the child from her arms, leaving her terrified and injured.

OP immediately cut contact, but her parents continue reaching out without apologizing or accepting responsibility.

Read on to see how she is coping with the guilt and grief of protecting her new family.

New mother cuts contact with her parents after they violently take her newborn

'Assaulted by my own parents because I wouldn't give them my crying baby. Currently NC and traumatized?'

\[TW: Physical Abuse & A__ault\]. Reposting because i didn't read the rules.

I really need to vent and hopefully get some support, because I am so

traumatized and exhausted by this entire situation.

My babygirl is now about 2.5 months old, but this major incident happened

when she was just 5 weeks old.

For some quick background context: My mother came to my house to

"help" for the first two weeks. She constantly complained about being

bored, telling how unhappy she is cuz she's not her own home. Shr

completely took over babycare, and would only bring the baby to me to

breastfeed before snatching her away to put her to sleep herself. She even

once referred to me as the baby’s "sister" and talked about my daughter as

her own baby. Because of all this interference, it took us 6 weeks to finally

feel like a real family in our own home.

Fast forward to week 5. My husband had to attend a relative's funeral. We

didn't want to expose our newborn to a large crowd yet, so he dropped me

off at my parents' house for a short 2 day stay. Otherwise, he would never

have left me alone with them.

The actual incident started because my baby was crying and I refused to

hand her over to them. Usually, whenever the baby cried, my mom would

immediately run in, tries take her from my arms, and go to another room.

Even if I'm breasteeding she sometimes stand over like hover on us. This

time, my mom was busy in the kitchen, so she sent my dad to act like a

"guard." He literally tried to take my baby from me while I was actively

breastfeeding.

I clearly told them I wasn't going to give her to them and that I would

soothe my own baby. They came in and out of the room 2 or 3 times,

getting more and more aggressive. Finally, they cornered me on the couch,

pinned my arms down, and forcefully ripped my baby out of my hands. I got

feral ofc like every mother animal would do. When I desperately tried to

get my baby back, my dad used physical force to keep her away from me,

violently pushing and shoving me. I ended up with cuts and scratches all

over my hand and arm.

While they were assaulting me, my mom kept yelling me that I was

abnormal, and sick that I needed to be heavily medicated, and that they

needed to sedate me/put me to sleep. They both accused me of being

"ungrateful" and acting crazy. They only backed off when I started

screaming that I was calling the police. When my mom finally gave my baby

back, she was crying with these wildly exaggerated, melodramatic

reactions. I immediately ran to my room, locked the door, and had to wait

there terrified until my husband could come get me the next day.

The very next day, I left that house and completely cut all contact with

them. I blocked them everywhere. Because my dad couldn't reach me and

my husband, he actually called my husband's workplace to try and get to

me. He talked b__lshit so it was embarassing

My husband has been incredibly supportive. To comfort me, he has

watched the baby monitor footage of the incident and constantly reminds

me that I was the only person acting sane in that situation. He is actually

absolutely furious. He talked to my parents and told them very clearly that

a genuine apology is the bare minimum and that they need to think long

and hard about what they did. He stands by me 100% and tells me I don't

have to do anything I don't want to do.

Right now my mom sends me random, completely unrelated cat videos or

some you should greatful for bs reels on instagram. She told my husband

that she doesn't think she needs to apologize and there's nothing to talk

to. she just wants the subject "closed." My dad is manipulative narcissitic

my whole life so what he's saying is absolutely irrelevent.

They are constantly trying to reach me now, but it's never to apologize.

They just want to sweep what they did under the rug so they can see their

granddaughter. I know they aren't actually sorry; they are just angry and

unhappy that they lost their power and control over me.

Has anyone dealt with this level of delusion and toxicity? How do you cope

with the aftermath of going No Contact, even when you know you did

exactly what you had to do to protect yourself and your child? Sometimes i

feel sad and alone but i forgive so many things over the years i feel like i

can't anymore. I never NC my parents and it feels wrong and icky even all

the trauma they've causef over the years.. English is not my native

language, so I apologize for any grammar mistakes.. Edit:

First of all, thank you to everyone for your concern, suggestions, good

wishes, and kind words. Life is still a bit chaotic as a new mom, so I read

what I could and am only just now able to reply.

Where I live, cutting ties with family isn't really considered normal. I live in a

society where people visit their grandparents and even distant relatives all

the time. Besides, completely removing your parents from your life isn't

easy, and that is actually why I wrote the post in the first place, because I

am struggling.

Many people asked why I haven't blocked them everywhere. I am not very

active on Instagram, and I don't really like to post anyway. I only saw the

reels they sent three days later. After that, I let it go for a bit because I

wanted to see where it would end up. But it got too triggering, so I ended

up blocking them there too. Then a Pinterest notification popped up. I had

actually forgotten Pinterest even existed.

You asked why I expect an apology. Family bonds are a very basic human

need, and I think because I have chased after that for thirty years, I can't

just break away. However, I am so lucky to have built my own safe family,

and I guess I won't go chasing after connections that are already long gone.

Plus, my mom and dad are highly manipulative people. They will cry, end up

in the hospital, and involve distant relatives or completely random people

until they get you back. Also, things had really calmed down over the years,

and I truly thought they had changed. I hadn't even told my husband of six

years about this side of my family until this incident.

Anyway, since it was my husband's day off, we had the chance to sit down,

look at the post, and talk it over. We spoke with a lawyer friend, and they

referred us to someone else regarding this issue. If your country is even

slightly corrupted, you know that the police work to get rid of paperwork

rather than actually help you. Believe me, if I went to the police, I might

have even drawn backlash from my social circle. The police just closed the

issue by telling us to sort it out among ourselves. Count yourselves lucky if

you think this is unbelievable. We decided It is too early to sue or take legal

action, and ultimately the support of the rest of my family is important, so

we don't want to make a wrong move. However, we did get this situation

on the record yesterday. We will also take the necessary precautions, like

installing a camera at the door. We live a few cities away and we are safe in

our community and our little girl is happy and healty.

Thankfully, there are no grandparents rights in my country. I spoke with a

lady from social services, and she told me that in case of a complaint or

anything, they generally try to keep the baby with the family, and

reassured me there is almost zero chance I will face any problems in my situation.

I read some messages from people who are going through or have gone

through similar things. I am sending you all so much love and hugs. I hope

you have the means to leave that toxic environment like I did, or that you

find a way out as soon as possible. I hope we can all find peace someday.

Going no contact with abusive parents can feel wrong even when remaining connected feels dangerous.

The grief is complicated because the person is not only separating from who their parents are, but also from the family relationship they spent years hoping might eventually become safe.

What happened to OP was not an ordinary disagreement about soothing a crying baby.

Her parents cornered her, restrained her arms, forcibly removed her breastfeeding newborn, pushed and scratched her, and threatened to sedate her while insisting that she was the irrational one.

Their behavior attacked both her physical safety and her authority as the baby’s mother.

Calling the assault “help” or portraying her resistance as instability does not change what occurred.

Her mother’s earlier conduct also gives the incident important context.

Taking over nearly all infant care, referring to OP as the baby’s sister, hovering during breastfeeding, and carrying the child into another room suggest an unwillingness to recognize OP as the primary parent.

When OP finally enforced that boundary, her parents responded with force.

Their later refusal to apologize and attempts to bypass blocked communication, show that their priority remains regaining access rather than repairing harm.

No contact is not revenge in this situation.

It is a protective boundary supported by observable behavior.

Her parents have not acknowledged the assault, accepted limits, or demonstrated that contact would be safe.

An apology alone would not automatically justify renewed access either; meaningful repair would require accountability, respect for OP’s parental authority, and sustained behavioral change.

The practical steps OP and her husband have taken are sensible: preserving the baby-monitor footage, creating an official record, seeking local legal advice, blocking unwanted contact, and installing a door camera.

Safety-planning guidance recommends preserving messages, recordings, injury documentation, and other evidence when abusive people continue attempts to make contact.

OP may still mourn her parents and wish they would become different.

Missing them does not mean the boundary is mistaken. It means attachment does not disappear immediately when trust is broken.

The family she is responsible for protecting now is the safe one she has built with her husband and daughter.

She did not destroy the relationship with her parents by refusing to surrender her baby.

They damaged it when they used violence to override her.

Peace may begin when she stops waiting for them to validate a reality the footage already proves.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters urged OP to file a police report and use the footage to create a legal record

DaenyTheUnburnt − 1- police report with footage, get a restraining order

2- BLOCK THEM everywhere, on every platform and change your locks.

morbidnerd − Girl you have footage you need to file a police report. I get

that you're traumatized but this is not a situation an apology will fix. At a

minimum a police report will start a paper trail that you might need later.

Healthy_Currency983 − You need to file a police report, you have the video

so it shouldn’t be hard depending on where you live that is. Best to

document that incident so that you have a legal trail if needed down the road.

These commenters recommended consulting a lawyer and pursuing a restraining order for long-term protection

PeppermintEvilButler − You need to take the footage and file a police

report. They've both shown they have no issue physically attacking you to

get their hands on your kid. I would be consulting a lawyer as well because I

have the feeling they will try to contact cps on you and make wild claims as

well as any other insane idea they come up with.

PsychoFaerie − You need to take that footage and file a police report

maybe even a restraining order. Contact a lawyer they'll be able to help you

navigate the legal system They are unhinged and tried to take your baby.

They will try again. Up your security cameras locks on windows..

keyless entry something they can't pick/guess maybe inform neighbors so

they can notify you if they've seen them around when you're not home.

RavenShield40 − You don’t just need to go NC you need to file a police

report, especially if you have video footage and you need to either move or

get security cameras all over your property, inside and out. This is ground

for a__ault charges and permanent restraining orders. I’m so sorry this

happened and this is not how grandparents should act.

I’m glad you have your husband to protect you but he can’t be there all the

time. You two need to do something that guarantees you and the baby are

always safe, even when he’s not home.

These commenters feared the relatives might escalate, involve CPS, or attempt to take the baby again

Such_Temporary_3125 − You absolutely need to file a police report like

YESTERDAY! !! Why haven't you done that already? !! These people have

CLEARLY never been told no a day in their entitled lives and they are

quietly plotting on how to get your child away from you.

Once your mom see's that you're not sweeping it under the rug she going

to send child protection to legally kidnap your baby! And don't think for a

second they won't! If they're crazy enough to lay hands on you to get to

your child, they will absolutely do whatever is necessary to get her away

from you.   You need to get angry.

They put your child at risk of getting dropped or hit and seriously injured! !

You might be mad but you're not nearly angry enough!   This is it momma.

This is the time to lay down some serious boundaries and they NEED

consequences. Don't you dare let them get away with what they did to you

or you baby! !

Eyelashestoolong − They were trying to kidnap your baby. They’re doing

their hardest to paint you as mentally unstable and unfit, they tried to take

away your child and take away any chance you could have at being her

mother. You need to file a police report for the safety of your child.

You need to notify your workplaces and any future teacher/caregiver that

the grandparents are dangerous. This is so serious

Hooked_on_PhoneSex − Since you have footage recorded, press charges.

These are unsafe people, and they will almost certainly escalate if given the

opportunity.

These commenters stressed that reporting the incident was necessary to protect the newborn from further danger

HappyLilGirl − Report them, PLEASE for your own protection and you baby's

Certain-Attempt1330 − Why have you not gone to the police? You are

risking your child's life.

Sufficient_Claim_461 − Your baby could have been hurt. If you are not

willing to go to the police for yourself think about how dangerous their

behavior was while you had a FIVE WEEK OLD BABY

After years of forgiving and hoping her parents would change, OP reached a breaking point when their behavior put both her and her newborn in danger.

Many people would agree that protecting a child and setting boundaries after such a traumatic event is not the same as being cruel.

But the emotional weight of going no contact with family is complicated.

Do you think OP should leave the door open for reconciliation if a genuine apology comes, or is the damage too severe?

How would you handle protecting your child while grieving the loss of a parent relationship? Share your thoughts below!
