Parent Refuses To Apologize To Teacher Until She Admits She Was Wrong

A parent’s quick confrontation at school drop-off has spiraled into a standoff with the administration. Every day runs smoothly, except Fridays, when one overly chatty teacher slows down the line by showing photos and making small talk.

After watching traffic pile up behind him, one dad stepped out of his car to ask her to move things along.

Now, he’s being accused of aggression and told to apologize. But since he has video proof that he didn’t raise his voice or swear, he’s refusing to say sorry until the teacher owns up to holding up the line.

A dedicated parent navigates the school drop-off routine flawlessly until one teacher’s habitual socializing stalls the line

Parent Refuses To Apologize To Teacher Until She Admits She Was Wrong
not the actual photo

'AITA for refusing to apologize to a teacher and parent until they acknowledge that they were wrong?'

I drop my 9yo son off at school at 8am every morning so he has time to meet up

with his friends and whatnot before they lineup at 8:30am.

Basically parents drop their kids at the front gate and a staff member supervises

to make sure that the kids get on campus quickly and keep the flow of traffic moving.

If they're not coming to school via car, then they have to enter campus on the other side

which is not preferable because there is a lot of traffic and construction.

The system works everyday but Friday when they have this one teacher doing gate supervision.

She spends way too much time chatting with people.

I started keeping track of how much time this is adding up and it's a lot.

Today, she spent time showing a parent pictures on her phone and talking.

I honked and was ignored. I can't let my son out of my car until a staff member

visually sees him transition from my car and onto campus.

Eventually I got out of my car and asked the mom and teacher how much longer were they going to be?

There's like 20 cars behind me and three ahead of me and this only happens when this teacher is doing gate supervision.

The mom drove off and the teacher said nothing.

Later today, I got an email from the VP telling me that I yelled at her and the mom

and created an unsafe situation by getting out of my car.

I corrected that version by saying that the teacher was creating an unsafe situation by creating traffic.

The VP asked me if I yelled or cursed and I said nope.

She said that someone said that they recorded me doing so.

I told her not to play games with me because she'll lose. Because guess what?

I recorded it too. All of a sudden it's a misunderstanding and I was asked to apologize to the teacher.

I said I would after she acknowledged that she was wrong.

In many workplaces, there’s a delicate balance between maintaining authority and respecting personal boundaries. In this situation, the OP’s frustration stems from a common issue: a manager or coworker refusing to respect agreed-upon policies.

When the OP asked to be transferred to the day shift to handle important HR matters for a job transfer, the supervisor’s refusal left them no choice but to continue working outside of their regular hours, which ultimately led to the creation of overtime.

It’s always important for both employees and managers to be aware of the impact of their decisions. In this case, the supervisor’s failure to adjust the OP’s schedule meant that overtime was inevitable.

The situation shows that if expectations are clearly laid out, and employees are given the flexibility to manage their time, things run smoothly.

Unfortunately, the supervisor’s initial refusal didn’t account for the OP’s actual needs, forcing them to work additional hours to handle important paperwork and transition tasks.

When working in environments with strict guidelines about overtime or hours worked, it’s crucial for managers to consider the full picture.

Allowing for some level of flexibility within these boundaries can prevent employees from having to go outside of their normal working hours. This could have easily been avoided if the supervisor had simply accommodated the OP’s request.

By ultimately standing their ground and adhering to the overtime rules, the OP showed that policies should be respected by everyone, including management.

Clear communication and understanding between employees and supervisors can prevent these situations, allowing for a more collaborative and less frustrating work environment.

See what others had to share with OP:

This group strongly supported OP, highlighting the hypocrisy of the teacher and VP

votefawnmoscato − NTA. Funny how they changed their tune because you actually recorded it.

What would irk me the most about this is that the VP was ready to lie and let the ACTUAL unsafe situation continue.

Like really? Lying about yelling, lying about cursing, and lying about recording.

And then claiming you’re creating an unsafe situation? Neither of these people should be in charge of children.

voiderest − NTA I'm kinda surprised the admin sided with the teacher and is going so far as to demand an apology.

I guess their in the same work cliché clique or something.

missy20201 − NTA Lmao, send your recording if you must, but the butthurt teacher

and whoever lied about having a recording of you cursing and yelling absolutely deserve to get embarrassed.

These commenters still agreed OP wasn’t wrong but felt the situation could’ve been handled with a calmer or more strategic approach

stevenfrijoles − She wasn't wrong, she purposely lied to try and get you in hot water.

I see nothing here to apologize for at all. Just going purely off the post, I'd say NTA.

However, someone who records themselves politely asking how long something will take,

and uses the phrase "don't play games with me because you'll lose?" You sound like a piece of work.

I won't consider that inference into judgement (I really don't like when people do that here)

so I'm still saying NTA, but boy howdy you don't come off as a likeable person.

Hammer_of_truthiness − NTA, but I do think it could have been handled better by elevating your concerns

with this teacher either directly in a calmer manner or by speaking with administration,

although the way the VP handled the situation doesn't give me tremendous confidence.

Ultimately your approach seems to have escalated the situation more than it should have been.

You aren't wrong for being frustrated, I would be too

This group encouraged OP to take firm action, use the recording as proof, and demand accountability from the administration for the false accusations

Stroopwafeled − NTA, and a resounding one at that. Use that recording and destroy them.

Apologise to no one. You were not in the wrong at all here.

Tell that VP to produce her alleged recording that she claims someone made, and if she doesn't, escalate the situation.

Petty people in small positions of what they think is power. They wield it badly.

Also, you were totally justified in asking them to chat another time, this is a drop-off, not a social situation.

The__Riker__Maneuver − Ask for a meeting between you, the principal, and the teacher

Bring an Ipad or a Laptop so you can all watch the video

Then ask the teacher to explain why she lied about the interaction

and whether or not the principal is going to reprimand the teacher for lying NTA

MarriedLife7 − I wouldn't apologize at all and tell the VP that you want to meet with her and the principal

and the lies that were told about you were not acceptable

and you are expecting a formal apology from the school for accusing you of these falsehoods. NTA

These Redditors validated OP’s frustration with the traffic issue

Early-Shopping4674 − NTA. It sounds like that teacher does not take her job seriously,

and getting out of your vehicle is not unsafe when the cars aren't moving

BECAUSE THEY WERE STOPPING THEM WITH THEIR CHATTING.

Buddhapup1 − NTA people need to get to work, they were holding up the line

_PLUE_ − Time is money. You stood your ground; nothing wrong with it. Definitely NTA.

This trio reinforced that OP had every right to stand their ground

ApocolypseJoe − NTA and continue to record. Bring the issue to the superintendent if you need to.

Maybe even the PTA moms would be up in arms... they all have to wait in line too!

journeyintopressure − NTA. "I will not apologize for stating they were creating traffic because the teacher likes to chat.

I do expect this not to happen again. I would also like an apology for the obvious lie about me yelling at staff."

These users simply expressed disbelief that anyone expected OP to apologize

Stoat__King − NTA. I am very unclear about what exactly you are meant to apologise for though.

And why you would consider it.

lazyhere1122 − NTA. I hate audacious liars.

Was holding out for her admission the smart play, or might looping in allies earlier have sped solutions? How do you navigate nitpicky authority without the drama? Rev your engines and share your school-run sagas below!
