Patient Keeps Complaining About a Missed Appointment Until the Doctor Reveals the Painful Truth

Most people understand that medical appointments can sometimes be canceled for reasons no one can control. Still, there is always someone who assumes the worst and demands an explanation they may not be prepared to hear.

The original poster had just returned to work after losing her mother following a long battle with cancer. While covering for a colleague, she met a patient who refused to stop complaining about a canceled appointment and kept pushing for details.

She tried several times to redirect the conversation, but he would not let it go. Eventually, she gave him an answer so blunt that the entire exchange ended immediately. Read on to see what she said.

A doctor finally revealed why appointments were canceled after a patient kept demanding answers

'Don’t think she’ll do that again…'

So I work in the medical field (as my username suggests) and after a year long battle with cancer my mom lost her fight.

Because of this I had to cancel my appointments for about a week because she lived out of state.

When I finally got back I was seeing a patient for a colleague and the conversation went as such (paraphrased because it was 2 years ago)

Patient: you know you can’t just go and cancel appointments on people all of a sudden.

My wife had an appointment with you and she needs to be seen.

Me: Well I didn’t mean to cancel on her, sometimes things happen that we don’t plan on.

Patient: Oh you doctors are always cancelling on people for no reason. What, you had to take a vacation all of a sudden?

Me: I try not to cancel on people if I can. And I’m pretty sure we got her back on the schedule in the near future.

(Reeeeaaaaally trying hard to change the topic of conversation here.

Patient: Yea, but you shouldn’t have canceled her appointment. What could have come up to make you cancel on her? My wife really needed to see you.

Me: (super fed up at this point and this guy has always been an ass)

Well my mom died. But I don’t think she’ll be doing that again so you should be good from here on forward.

Patient: *surprised Pikachu face*

Weirdly enough it’s been 2 years and I’ve not seen him again. I gave him so many chances to change the subject…..

Grief does not pause when someone returns to work. A person may put on professional clothes, follow a schedule, and care for others while privately carrying a loss that has altered their entire world. When that hidden pain is met with entitlement rather than patience, even a carefully controlled response can eventually become painfully direct.

In this situation, the medical professional had cancelled appointments because their mother died after a year-long battle with cancer. Upon returning, they encountered a patient who repeatedly complained about his wife’s rescheduled appointment.

The patient did not know why the cancellation occurred, yet assumed it involved an unnecessary vacation and continued demanding an explanation despite several attempts to redirect the conversation.

By finally saying that their mother had died and would not “do that again,” the clinician exposed the cruelty of his assumption. The comment was cutting, but it emerged only after quieter boundaries had been ignored.

Many readers may see the reply as a satisfying comeback. Another perspective is that it reveals the emotional labor expected from medical workers. Patients understandably become frustrated when care is delayed, particularly when they are worried about their health.

However, that anxiety can create a narrow view in which the clinician becomes merely a service provider rather than a human being with emergencies, illness, and bereavement of their own. The patient’s demand for a personal justification forced the professional to disclose grief that they had repeatedly tried to keep private.

The American Psychological Association describes grief as the anguish following a significant loss and notes that it may involve emotional distress, physical symptoms, and difficulty functioning normally. Returning to familiar responsibilities does not mean bereavement has ended.

The American Medical Association also advises that disrespectful patient behavior can cause psychological harm and should be addressed rather than silently accepted in the name of customer satisfaction.

Seen through that insight, the clinician’s sarcasm functioned as a final boundary after several more professional attempts failed. It was not the gentlest response, and mentioning a death so bluntly may have made the appointment uncomfortable.

Still, discomfort was not created solely by the answer. It began when the patient treated access to another person’s private tragedy as something he was owed.

A realistic lesson is that patients may question scheduling changes without interrogating or insulting the person providing their care.

Clinics can offer practical information about rescheduling, but employees should not have to reveal bereavement to prove that an absence was legitimate. Frustration deserves acknowledgment; it does not grant permission to abandon empathy.

See what others had to share with OP:

This group shared similar experiences of being pressured or criticized at work while handling grief, highlighting the absurdity of expecting work to come first

[Reddit User] − Brilliant. My mom passed away unexpectedly in 2011, and I was out of work for a week.

Upon return, a client called pissed off because I didn't get an invoice that I told them I would send because, of course, when I got the call, I bolted...

The day after the funeral, the client calls and immediately starts going off on me as soon as I answer.

I apologized, telling her what happened, and assured it would go out before noon. She proceeds to b__ch even louder.

At this point, I yell into the phone, WELL NEXT TIME MY MOM DECIDES TO DROP DEAD, I'LL CALL YOU FIRST TO MAKE SURE IT'S AT A CONVENIENT TIME FOR...

and then slam the phone down. I waited another week to send the invoice, but she never called to complain again.

AreYouItchy − My Mum lost her Mum and her Father about a month apart. One of her co-workers complained about having to do her work while she was away.

My Mum said, “In my family, we bury our dead. Don’t you? ” That n__ty piece of work couldn’t meet her eyes for about two years.

Stoner_goth − I worked at a salon (this was years ago) and my bf at the time died, I called out of work (standing next to the paramedic)

and my boss began to yell at me for calling out. She said I was “ruining her day”, the paramedic took my phone and yelled at her and hung up.

She texted me not to worry about my shifts for the next “few days”

Crown_the_Cat − Good for you. This is like the behavior of people about Covid. THEIR slight inconvenience trumps everyone else in the world.

Sorry for your loss. F__k cancer. My mom died at 68 from her fourth round of cancer.

They called me and said “she won’t last the night” and I bolted and flew cross-country. She lived another 2 months in a coma.

I had to go back to work. Even when you expect it, it is a shock.

alclatt − One of my husband’s patients threw an absolute fit when they showed up for an appointment and had to see his PA.

It got so bad the PA called my husband on speaker (with my husband’s permission)

because the patient was just so sure he cancelled to go sit on a beach somewhere.

Instead, he was in the hospital with me having an emergency induction of our 4th child 3 weeks early

because I was suffering from pre-eclampsia. They shut up real quick and didn’t ever come back for their follow up.

bismofunyuns93 − I worked in a print shop in 2022 when my mom passed. I just told my boss and left in the middle of the day.

He gave me a week off, but didn't tell my clients or do any of the projects they had been waiting on while I was gone. He didn't even call...

My first day back I get slammed with insults and cussed at cause their posters, pamphlets and the likes were not done in time and asked for a refund.

(Reasonable but I was not in a good place. ) I launched back at them with the whole "I'd like to refund your life for my mom's back."

They got the hint, but were so red with anger and embarrassment that they tried to call corporate and they didn't budge.

I left a few days after just from having no patience with people anymore.

a-punk-is-for-life − I had a customer once ask me if I knew how hard it was to look after elderly parents and have to do everything for them.

I sympathised and I spent 5 minutes trying to move the conversation forward while she kept saying "do you though? Do you know what it's like? Do you? DO YOU?"

Until I eventually cracked and said "no, neither of my parents reached old age. " She swore at me and put the phone down 🤷‍♀️

These users noted that some people fail to recognize coworkers as humans with personal lives, praising OP’s firm but honest response

kdwhirl − Had to call out sick a few weeks ago for the first time in literally years, and a (very nice, longstanding)

patient straight up said to me at her rescheduled routine appointment “I forget you guys are people. ” 🤦‍♀️

Alive_Room6023 − Good for you. I once worked for the state tax department and this guy, who was in arrears for 4 years,

kept calling for one of the women that I worked with and she wasn’t returning his calls.

When I told him that she would get back in touch as soon as she could, he sarcastically said that he was sorry that he wasn’t getting calls back.

I told him that he should be sorry. Taken aback because I called him out, he demanded to know why he should be sorry.

I told that asshat that she just lost a close family member and was off on grievance leave. He STFU immediately

This commenter praised OP’s comeback and sought permission to emulate it, showing admiration for standing up to unreasonable behavior

sphinx174 − What a great comeback. May I use it?

Was the doctor’s reply perfectly fair, or should professionals always stay composed no matter what? How would others respond if someone dismissed one of the hardest moments of their lives? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
