Photographer Gets Asked To Edit Prom Photos For Free, So She Add Shrek To Every Shot

Everyone loves a good prank, especially when it’s at the expense of a group that thinks they can take advantage of your skills for free. One photographer with a solid portfolio and a habit of offering discounted or free shoots found herself being used by her ex’s family for prom photos.

After being asked to quickly edit and upload 300+ pictures late at night, she did what anyone would do: she added Shrek to every single one. What started as a request for a simple favor turned into a hilarious social media mishap. It took weeks for anyone to notice, and the result was a masterpiece of passive-aggressive revenge.

A hobbyist photographer, pressured into free prom photos and rushed overnight edits, inserts Shrek into every image before delivering to the demanding family

not the actual photo

'Got used for free photography, made sure a special friend was included?'

I’m not a professional photographer, but I do have decent equipment and portfolio so a lot of friends will hit me up for discounted photo shoots.

Most of them pay or at least buy me dinner, but others expect me to do it for free...

I’m close with my ex-boyfriend’s family so I was thrilled when his younger sister asked me

to come to her prom pictures earlier this month, until she told me to bring the camera.

I did mention to her that I’m doing online school and I have an exam due that week so the pictures might not be ready for another week.

She was fine with that.

Within two hours of taking pictures of half a dozen high-school students, I ended up with 300+ shots because everyone wanted the perfect Instagram shot.

Whatever, I can go home, study, and slowly work on sorting through the pictures later. They’re not paying me so I wasn’t exactly motivated either.

I get a text from her and her mom that night at around 11 pm, they want the pictures edited AND uploaded by the next morning

so they could be shown off on social media. I tried to explain that I’m studying but they weren’t having it;

they said, “We don’t care how you edit it, just make it look nice.” Fine.

I spent the next 3+ hours working on the pictures and editing them really nicely that even I was proud of them...

Then I hid Shrek into the background of every single picture.

Shrek with his head poking out between the kids, Shrek posing happily, Shrek had a very nice time at prom, evidently.

I uploaded the pics and sent them off, no one noticed the extra guest for weeks

and I got my ear chewed out because my ex’s sister didn’t appreciate her 900 followers on Instagram

seeing Shrek grinning between her and her boyfriend.

They asked me to edit however I wanted, so I delivered. Shrek was one of my best clients I’ve ever had.

One day, the photographer’s kindness was taken advantage of, so she decided to deliver a special “surprise” to her demanding clients.

The Original Poster (OP) was not a professional photographer, but she had decent equipment and a growing portfolio. Friends often reached out to her for discounted or free photo shoots, and while some offered payment or at least bought her dinner, others expected her to work for free.

One day, her ex-boyfriend’s younger sister asked her to photograph her prom pictures. OP was happy to help since she was close with the family, but when the sister asked her to bring the camera, OP didn’t realize she was walking into a situation that would test her patience.

During the photo session, OP found herself snapping hundreds of shots as every student wanted the perfect Instagram-worthy moment. By the time the shoot was over, OP was exhausted and mentally preparing to get back to her online studies. She informed the family that the pictures wouldn’t be ready right away, but that she’d get to them when she could.

However, that night, the sister and her mom texted OP, demanding that the photos be edited and uploaded by the next morning for their social media. Despite being in the middle of studying for an exam, they insisted, telling her to make them look “nice” without caring how long it would take. OP reluctantly agreed and spent over three hours editing the pictures, ensuring they were done well.

But when the editing was complete, OP decided to have a little fun. She secretly inserted Shrek into the background of every single photo from Shrek’s head poking out between the students to him happily posing alongside the prom-goers. She uploaded the pictures and sent them off, thinking little of it until the family later discovered the surprise.

A few weeks later, OP’s ex-sister-in-law was furious to discover Shrek’s unintended cameo in her photos, especially since she had posted them to her Instagram for all 900 of her followers to see. However, OP felt that the family had only themselves to blame, having asked for the photos to be edited however OP wanted. And deliver she did, with Shrek taking center stage.

This story serves as a lighthearted reminder about the importance of setting boundaries and the risks of taking advantage of someone’s goodwill. While OP certainly delivered on the task, it raises an important point about respecting others’ time and expertise, especially when it comes to work done for free. If you ask for a favor, you just might get more than you bargained for.

What do you think? Was this playful response a clever way to handle an entitled request, or should OP have approached it differently? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors offered practical solutions, advising the OP to set clear boundaries by explaining their busy schedule and learning to say no to avoid getting caught in unpaid work

algy888 − You did well. Hope your exams went well. I am asked to “help” with electrical needs from friends and family

and my answer was always the same. “No problem but I’m kinda busy right now.”

I would never charge but unless it was OMG!!! Your house is gonna burn down bad then your fancy switch was gonna wait a couple of months.

It kept down the requests. In your case if something like that happens again you could say

“Oh sorry but I’m super busy and have to put my paying clients first. I mean they are paying the bills, right?”

teresajs − Next time someone invites you to an event/activity and asks you to bring your camera, you should "accidentally" forget the camera at home.

tharkyllinus − Learn to say no.

This group shared humorous takes on the situation, suggesting creative ways to subtly “mess with” the expectations, like hiding Shrek in photos or adding playful “unpaid proof” text

ConfusedPolatBear − I would pay extra to have Shrek hidden in every picture I am in. It would distract people from looking at me.

Shawni1964 − Why, oh why, do people expect you to do something free for them? Hire another g__damn professional or pay the person to do it.

I am an interior designer and can't tell you how many times I hear the old "maybe you can stop by and help me with my kitchen /living room/ bathroom...

I get paid to do this for a living and i am not doing it for free for you. I will help my BFF from high school out and a...

but I expect that they will buy their kitchen materials from me so that I make some money on it. If not then find someone else.

srhuston − "UNPAID PROOF" right over the duckfaces. But the subtlety of Shrek in every photo is kinda nice too,

since they were shared far and wide before anyone noticed.

These commenters highlighted the value of setting clear terms with friends and family, stressing the importance of getting paid for work

JasonDetwiler − My wife did photography for a while. The worst clients were always the free or discounted sessions.

You had the perfect storm of PITA: Free Friends Teenagers Large group Special event

[Reddit User] − Good on you. You were upfront about the probable delay. I assume you're not so close to your ex's family after this little stunt?

Taha_Amir − You should always ask for pay before giving them the pictures.

If they want them edited, pay for it, if they don't want them edited, you can do whatever you like with the photos.

This group emphasized the need to be firm with clients, suggesting straightforward ways to communicate professional boundaries

Slappy_G − As a fellow photographer, you really need to just say a flat no. Doing things for free for "exposure" or "word of mouth" is a bad idea.

If you just can't say no, tell them: "My rate is $100 per hour (or whatever) and my friends and family discount is 10%.

Let me know when you want me to draw up the event contract."

Shadowfalx − Should have just put large text over the picture “Work provides for free by Shinethedog.”

Right over their faces. Shrek is cool and all, but easily not noticed.

MississippiJoel − Ugh. This makes me angry. I would rather have heard you say that you predicted this would happen,

so you turned off your phone at 7 for the whole night so you could concentrate.

Was the ogre opulent or overkill? Would you watermark next, or ghost the gig? How do you free-proof your lens? Swamp your stories below!
