Family gatherings, school reunions, or birthday parties, no matter the occasion, some social interactions are always tricky. This Redditor dreaded attending her childhood friend’s birthday party because of a recurring guest whose comments on her weight crossed a line every single year.

After enduring endless remarks about her thin frame, she decided to follow a piece of advice from her mom: respond with confidence and own her body. Yet, even the most careful plans can go awry, and this time, her response triggered a dramatic chain of events. Scroll down to see how one bold reply sparked a moment that left everyone stunned.

Guest’s Self-Praise Triggers Unexpected Birthday Meltdown

I dread going to my childhood friend's birthday party every year.

We moved apart a decade ago, and even though I'll always care deeply about her, we are very different people now and her friend group reflects this.

She has one friend, let's call her Amanda, who...without fail... has to comment on my weight EVERY single time she sees me.

'You're so skinny!' 'Do you even eat?' 'Does your bf care that you don't have curves?' 'Your legs are like sticks!'

For the record, eat plenty. I just have a fast metabolism which keeps me super thin.

I keep a strong face when Amanda says these things to me, but truthfully she's touching on my worst insecurities and it makes me dread going to these parties every...

I was considering not going this year, until I talked to my mom about it.

My mom had (what I thought was) a great idea on how to deal with Amanda.

She suggested I pretend she's giving me a compliment.

My mom told me: "If Amanda says 'You're so skinny!', just smile and say 'Thanks! I love being skinny.

And if she looks disappointed at your response, you'll have proven she was trying to insult you."

I thought this was great advice, however something I had failed to mention to my mom was that Amanda was overweight.

I didn't realize this meant I was entering potential AH territory.

Anyway, the dreaded birthday party day comes. And of course, no surprise, Amanda immediately looks at my arms and comments how tiny they are.

I ignored this comment. Then later on in the day, we were standing in a group together and she was eyeing me up and down.

She chuckled to herself and says "God, you're so skinny.".

And I thought, ok here it is. Here is my moment. I turned to her, smiled and said "Thanks. I love being skinny".

And then, and I am completely serious here.... SHE SLAPS ME IN THE FACE!!!!!

I was in complete shock, just staring back at her, mouth hanging open with my hand on my cheek.

Everyone was silent.

She suddenly bursts into tears and runs out of the room. Two of her friends chase her.

Only one other girl and my childhood friend asked if I was okay, but everyone else was just shooting me dirty looks.

I promptly left the party (which sucked cause I had a two-hour commute and had planned to sleepover).

The next day, I was texting with my childhood friend about it.

She basically thinks that even though Amanda shouldn't have slapped me, that I was insensitive for saying "I love being skinny" to a plus size person.

I argued that Amanda has been consistently insensitive to me every party.

And I didn't comment on her body, only my own.

She told me that it's different because being skinny is socially acceptable, and that Amanda wouldn't usually do something like this but I triggered her with my 'insult'.

My mom thinks I am in the right but this was all her idea so of course she does lol.

So AITA for what I said to Amanda?

Body-shaming is a pervasive issue across demographics. In the Reddit story, the OP faced persistent commentary about her thinness, while the instigator, Amanda, carried insecurities about her own body.

According to a 2021 study published by Psychology Today, individuals who are dissatisfied with their body image often project criticism onto others as a way of coping with internalized anxiety.

Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner, a licensed clinical psychologist, explains: “People often use comments about others’ bodies to feel a sense of control or superiority. When met with unexpected confidence, it can trigger an exaggerated emotional response.”

In this case, the OP’s polite assertion of pride in her own body unintentionally highlighted Amanda’s discomfort, leading to an aggressive reaction. This underscores the subtle but powerful ways social hierarchies and insecurities manifest in peer groups.

From a sociological perspective, body image conflict often reflects larger societal standards. Research from Healthline notes that thinness is socially valorized, while plus-size bodies are stigmatized, creating a power dynamic that can backfire in personal interactions.

Here, the Redditor reclaimed the narrative around her body without directly criticizing Amanda, yet the emotional stakes were high because societal messaging primes individuals to respond defensively when confronted.

Practical advice for those in similar situations includes calmly asserting personal boundaries, disengaging from repeated criticism, or preparing neutral responses like, “I understand you notice my body; I’d prefer we focus on catching up instead.”

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters stress that Amanda’s slap was completely unacceptable, and OP is not at fault

MyFriendsCallMeEpic − NTA - im petty Id press a__ault charges. Her having an issue with her weight doesn't give her the right to lay hands on anyone.

shammy_dammy − Hello, police, I'd like to report a battery...

LukeHeart − NTA I’d press charges. She physically assaulted you.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Being plus sized doesn't give anyone a free pass to comment on other people's bodies.

She was a bully and when you called her out on her s__t, she lost it and did what she probably wanted to do for a long time and punish...

Of course, she's going to spin it differently and play the victim, but at the end of the day, you have to calmly tell your side of the story. P....

1KirstV − WTF? She slapped you because she’s jealous and unhappy. F everyone who doesn’t get that and F Amanda too.

Hawkgrrl22 − NTA. Your mom is right. She FAFO'd, and then assaulted you with witnesses.

I get it. Being overweight is tough. But insulting skinny people isn't the solution.

She was way out of line, and slapping you is completely unacceptable. She needs to apologize or friendship over.

They point out that OP only talked about their own body, Amanda had no right to comment, and OP did nothing wrong

ecnaidar1323 − NTA I love your mom

mongotongo − NTA - Your friends suck. Find new ones. Amanda opened herself to an attack the second she commented on your weight.

You could have made a comment about her being plus size and I still would say NTA.

You didn't even do that. All you said was something about yourself. If your friends can't see that, then they are not friends.

Catfish1960 − Totally NTA - Amanda is a bully and didn't like that she didn't get the expected reaction

This group offers advice or shared experiences on how OP can respond to Amanda confidently, humorously, or assertively without escalating conflict

pretty-pleeb − NTA… next time…shut down a bully with this: “I know I’m skinny, it’s not a secret. Why do you feel the need to constantly comment on my size?...

gdaybarb − I knew someone like this. She used to call me skinny mini every time I saw her. One day I replied back hi fatty watty. Never happened again.

These users highlight the unfair societal treatment of different body types and stress that commenting on anyone’s body is harmful; everyone deserves respect

PlayaRosita − You are not the AH!

Why is it not okay for someone to comment on how overweight they are, but the same doesn’t go for being thin?

Imagine if you would have said “oh my, you are so fat” to Amanda every time you saw her?

S__ew her, go and have yourself a huge piece of cake and laugh about how you won’t gain a pound! 🤪🍰

facingtherocks − NTA.

I am overweight and I would NEVER comment on anyone’s body size, large, small, medium tall short.

Someone’s body is the least interesting thing about them. And body policing is wrong no matter what.

Appearance comments, even ones on women who are small are harmful.

You have the right to live in peace in your body.

This commenter advises OP to distance themselves from unsupportive friends and take strong actions to avoid unnecessary drama, standing up to Amanda’s behavior

PBB_Sav − Press charges, I hate people like that with my whole soul.

Drop all of them people that disagree with what you did, it will help with you not having any drama to deal with.

People like that are so ignorant and hypocritical. It’s sad to see how stupid their logic is.

You’re so much better than me I woulda got fed up and would’ve started making comments about her weight.

Youre very mature.

In the end, this party disaster illustrates the messy intersection of friendship, body image, and social expectations. The woman tried a tactful, assertive approach, only to be met with unexpected aggression.

Do you think her response was fair, or should she have handled Amanda differently? And what about friends who silently condone violence, how much responsibility do they bear?

It’s a reminder that navigating old friendships can be as complicated as navigating social norms, especially when insecurities collide. Share your hot takes below!
