Pregnant Mom Refused Hospital Visitors, But Her MIL Threatened to Sneak In to Meet the Baby

by Leona Pham
August 17, 2026
in Social Issues

The arrival of a first baby is supposed to be one of the most emotional and personal moments in a couple’s life.

But for some families, the excitement of becoming grandparents can turn into a battle over boundaries, attention, and control.

The original poster (OP) is only days away from giving birth when her MIL begins pushing against the couple’s clear decision to have no hospital visitors.

What started as requests for a “quick visit” quickly turned into a list of demands about updates, photos, and access to the newborn.

OP and her fiancé tried to stay calm, but MIL’s reaction left them questioning how things will look once the baby arrives.

Read on to see how they handled the situation.

First-time mom prepares for birth, but her MIL keeps pushing past hospital and newborn boundaries

Pregnant Mom Refused Hospital Visitors, But Her MIL Threatened to Sneak In to Meet the Baby
not the actual photo

'MIL makes demands about birth?'

I’m a first time mom, my due date is in 8 days and MIL is stressing me out

We have previously told her we don’t want visitors at the hospital, and will

not have any visitors at home until I’m ready. We told everyone to expect to wait a week, maybe two.

Everyone except MIL have been very understanding, she has tried several

times to change our minds about letting her visit in the hospital after

delivery. A few weeks ago she was alone with FH and tried to change his

mind. She told him we were “taking an important experience away from

her as a grandma” by not letting her meet baby at the hospital, like she has

a right to be there and I think she makes it sound like her grandma

experience matters more than my experience and me being comfortable as

a first time mom. She tried to convince him to let her meet baby at the hospital “just for a quick 5 minute visit”.

I think it will be unfair to everyone else to let her come, and she’s honestly

the last person I want to see when I’m vulnerable after giving birth. And it

pisses me off and seems very disrespectful to me that she tries to convince

FH to let her come after both I and FH previously told her no.. Fortunately FH told her no.

She also told FH that it will break her heart if my mom gets to visit in the

hospital and she doesn’t. We never told her my mom will come (which she

will not, unless I need her support after delivery). FH told MIL that the plan

is for no one to come, unless “OP needs her mom to be there for HER after

delivery”. He explained to her that it wouldn’t be about meeting baby but

would be about my mom supporting me while I’m vulnerable. MIL basically

told him it would be unfair and cruel, and I shouldn’t be able to have my

mom come unless we let her come meet baby as well…

It’s like she only sees her own needs and wants to punish me for not letting

her come. Like she sees the birth of our first child as a competition

between her and my mom. And like she wants control of everything.. What happened today:

MIL visited us today and told us she has accepted that we don’t want

visitors at the hospital etc. but she has a few demands for us.. 1. We need

to tell her as soon as I go into labor. 2. We have to call/text her immediately

after baby arrives and also tell her all his info (weight, etc.)

3. She expects us to send at least 4 pictures and a video of baby every single day until she meets him.

She told me she previously mentioned these demands to FH and he

accepted them. I said out loud that no one told me any of this, and I’m not

accepting any demands from anyone. FH looked confused and immediately

said that he never agreed to anything and these demands were news to

him. MIL kept saying that this is how it’s going to be or she will show up at the hospital.

FH and I told her no and we’re informing the hospital staff that we don’t

want anyone there, so it will be a waste of her time to attempt to visit us at

the hospital. She said that no one can keep her away if she’s determined,

that she knows her ways and will definitely come if we don’t follow her

demands. That she will even go as far as to order a white coat and try to sneak past hospital staff.

I told her our plan is to announce baby’s arrival, but we’re not telling

anyone when I go into labor as that will be too stressful for me. FH added

that he won’t tell her anything and will put his phone on do not disturb.

And I told her we plan to send a few pictures, but not a specific amount and

it will be sent in a family group chat so everyone receives the same info and

pictures so no one is left out. She got quiet after that and left soon after.

After she left I told FH I was worried, he told me she was clearly joking and

won’t show up. Even if she’s joking, it makes me angry and worried after

everything she’s previously done to boundary stomp.

I was definitely being too nice to her today, and explaining myself too

much, I’m trying to keep the peace for FH. It would hurt him a lot if a

conflict happens at this point in time, when he’s so excited to show off our

baby and share this new journey with his family, I’m just frustrated over her

entitlement and selfishness, and I’m worried about how it will be when

baby gets here. I expect things to get worse and I just feel so done with her.

The arrival of a first child is one of the few moments in life when a person’s need for safety, privacy, and control is completely understandable.

Birth is not just a family event; it is a major physical and emotional experience for the person giving birth.

In OP’s situation, the conflict is not really about a hospital visit or a few pictures.

It is about whether her boundaries as a new mother will be respected during one of the most vulnerable moments of her life.

OP has communicated a clear plan: no hospital visitors, no immediate home visits, and time to recover before introducing the baby to extended family.

Most relatives accepted that boundary. MIL, however, appears to interpret the boundary as a personal rejection.

Her focus seems to be on what she is losing as a grandmother rather than what OP needs as the person recovering from childbirth.

The repeated attempts to negotiate, create guilt, and set “demands” have turned what should be an exciting time into a stressful one.

A different way to view MIL’s behavior is that she may be struggling with the emotional transition from being the center of her own children’s lives to becoming an extended family member.

Some grandparents experience a strong desire to be included because they see the birth of a grandchild as a major milestone in their own identity.

That feeling can be understandable. However, emotional disappointment does not give someone the right to override the parents’ decisions.

The most concerning part of the situation is not that MIL wants pictures or wants to meet the baby quickly.

It is the statement that she will find a way around the parents’ wishes, even joking about disguising herself to enter the hospital.

Whether she intended it as humor or not, those comments create anxiety because they communicate that her desire may come before OP’s comfort.

That idea applies strongly here. OP is not preventing MIL from loving her grandchild.

She is asking for a short period of privacy during recovery.

A supportive grandparent understands that protecting the mother’s well-being also protects the baby’s environment.

A stressed, exhausted, or pressured mother cannot fully enjoy those first moments.

OP’s husband’s response is an important positive sign.

He corrected MIL, clarified that he never agreed to her demands, and supported the plan.

The couple’s biggest priority now is staying united. They do not need to keep explaining or defending their choices; repeated explanations often create more opportunities for someone to negotiate.

The healthiest path forward may be simple and consistent: “This is what we decided. We will share updates when we are ready.”

The birth of their child should begin with peace, not with a battle over access. Grandparents earn closeness through respect, not entitlement.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters supported firm boundaries and consequences for MIL’s behavior

No_Dot6963 − And so it begins. If your DH agreed to her demands, he can

fulfill them. I would not communicate with her unless she was right in front

of me. Let her know that if she shows up at the hospital, she will be the last

family member to meet lo. Your boundary is no hospital visits, the consequence is delayed meeting.

I hope you have a plan for keeping her out of your home for the requested

time. The hospital at least has security. Tell MIL that she is making her way to being the grandparent we never see.

Bubbly-Student-3878 − Oh OP your JNMIL is forcing your hands and

making everything anout her. Tell DH to tell his mom if she tries any of this,

or is she doesnt knock the s__t off right now, she will never meet the baby.

This may seem extreme but your husband needs to know he needs to

handle this now or his mom will ruin the relationship with you forever. I

would even tell her that what she is doing so far is going to take some time

to get over but she can try and prove herself trustworthy if she stops right now.

This is a woman who will put anything she wants over you, baby and husbamds needs

Actual-Tap-134 − I’d map out a list of rules and consequences for her:

complaining about birth rules is one extra day before meeting baby for

each instance; making demands and/or pushing for changes is one extra

week; trying to show up at the hospital is an extra two weeks — or even a month!

Try to find something that has consequences that can be enacted before

baby gets here so that you can show her you will be enforcing things. Make

sure your partner is on the same page, and DO NOT back down once

consequences are given. As your baby grows up, you can use the same tactics and she will know you mean it.

If you give in, she will know you don’t.

This group advised informing hospital staff and securing privacy during labor

savannah_1231 − Labor/delivery nurse here - make sure your nurse knows

that no one can visit you without your explicit approval. We make good security guards :)

Dawnhollynyc − Do yourself a favor and lockdown the hospital. Let your OB

know as well as the head labor and delivery nurse that she may show up. I

don’t want to see you have the experience I have seen others had with bat

crap crazy MILs like this. She had her experience when she gave birth!

Nefarious-kitten − Print a photo of MIL and provide it to the hospital staff

along with her name. Tell multiple hospital staff that on no account is she

to be let in. Hospitals, particularly L&D, have dealt with this before. They know how to do it.

But, I’d be petty enough to get another family member to call her and say

you’re in labour days after you gave birth. Do what you feel is right for you and don’t give in to her bs.

RogueDIL − Send a group text to the immediate family now saying you and

hubby are going into nesting mode and will not be answering calls or texts until after baby is here and you all are settled.

You can then pick and chose who you want to make exceptions for, nothing

preventing you both from reaching out, but you will not be at anyone’s beck and call. Mute her number if needed.

Also, go do a pre-check in visit to your maternity ward and let them know

what’s going on (including her insistence that she will attempt to sneak in)

and ask to be listed as private. L&D floors are very much used to managing tricky family situations.

These Redditors recommended not sharing labor details or birth announcements until OP is ready

Chocmilcolm − Do not tell ANYONE when you go into labor. I know that it's

exciting and you may want to share with friends and family, but this is just

an invitation for the JNOs to act up. Not only don't you want MIL to show

up, you also don't want constant texts/phone calls asking what your progress is!

Both you and your DH should turn your phones off when you go into labor

until you leave the hospital. What can happen that you/DH would need to

be notified of that would be more important than what you will be doing? Any emergencies?

Call 911! The other thing that I would do is to inform MIL that if she doesn't

stop her nonsense right now - she will be put in a time-out after LO is born

and won't get to meet them for an added amount of time.

She is stressing out a pregnant lady who does NOT need to be stressed out

right now, and there WILL be consequences for it. You should put it this way to DH also.

He should protect you from her nonsense so that you can have a safe end

to your pregnancy and a safe delivery by shutting her down and putting her

in time-out if necessary. MIL does not have the right to have any demands

and your hubby needs to settle this now! ! Good luck OP! We're routing for you.

Mick1187 − Plot twist-she was always planning to show up anyway. Have

your husband continue to run interference. Put her on an actual no visitor

list so they’ll be looking out for her. If SO puts his phone on DND she’s

going to know something is up. Don’t tell her when you’re home because she WILL come to your house.

Make sure SO tells her she will be turned away at the door if that happens. What a l__atic.

Ok-Release2285 − Don't announce the birth until you are home! If you

announce at the hospital, chances are she'll wait for you at your house.

Make sure your hospital know you don't want any visitors at all, they won't

let anyone onto the ward without your consent. With photos, make sure

everyone who is receiving them is very clear on your boundaries with social media.

I've had issues with sending photos to my in-laws and them then posting

them on their public social media accounts despite them knowing we don't

want that. We had to tell them that if they continued to post, we would

stop sending photos. They ended up on a complete blackout for a while because they didn't respect this boundary.

acryingshame93 − This woman is not joking. You know she wants all the

name, weight etc info and photos because she is going to announce it

before you do. You do not tell this woman s__t when you go into labor and

register as private at the hospital. You tell your DH to keep his mouth shut. his mom is a loose cannon.

OP’s story highlights a common conflict after a baby arrives: grandparents wanting a special role while parents are trying to protect their own experience.

MIL framed the hospital visit as something being “taken away” from her, but the birth belongs to the parents, especially the person recovering physically and emotionally.

The biggest concern is not the photos or updates; it’s the repeated attempts to negotiate boundaries that were already clearly set.

Do you think MIL’s demands are understandable excitement, or did she cross into entitlement?

How would you handle a relative who treats your baby’s arrival like a shared event instead of your family’s moment? Share your thoughts below!
