Candidate Has a Bathroom Disaster During Final Interview, Somehow Gets Triple Their Old Salary

Job interviews are stressful enough when everything goes according to plan. Add an upset stomach, an important final-round meeting, and the fear of losing a major career opportunity, and suddenly even basic concentration becomes almost impossible.

One Redditor found himself trapped in that exact nightmare shortly before interviewing with a company’s COO. His stomach had already started rebelling, but delaying the call felt risky, so he cleaned himself up and joined anyway. Unfortunately, his body had other plans.

As the questions kept coming, the situation became progressively harder to hide until something happened that most applicants would consider their worst possible interview story. Somehow, though, the conversation ended with news he never expected to hear. Scroll down to see how one deeply embarrassing interview turned into an unforgettable career moment.

'I s__t my pants during job interview last week'

I know this sounds absurd but exactly what the title reads. I had a job interview last week and I s__t my pants during it.

I do not know what messed up my stomach but just before the interview I felt that burning urge of going to toilet.

I felt something was wrong but hoped I could sort it out in 10 mins.

Boy, I was wrong. I literally s__t my bowels out but still felt like doing more.

I checked my phone and it was time for the interview. I did not want to delay it as it was the final round with the COO of the company.

I joined the interview call after cleaning myself. We started the interview and I could hear roaring noises coming from my bowels and was sweating.

I wished for interview to end quickly but COO asked and asked. In the end, I could not hold it up anymore and literally s__t my pants.

COO told me I am a great fit for the position and I got the final offer. 3x annual salary of what I previously made with great benefits.

I did not know if I should cry or laugh at that time. I just left the call after final sayings. I had to throw my chair out and get...

It was a s__tty interview but with a great ending. I'll probably tell this one to my grandchildren in the future.

Few experiences feel more vulnerable than losing control of the body at exactly the moment someone desperately wants to appear composed.

Embarrassment can make a few minutes feel enormous, convincing people that everyone will remember their worst moment forever. Yet life has an odd way of proving that what feels catastrophic internally may barely register to anyone else.

In this situation, the OP was dealing with two pressures simultaneously. His stomach was clearly in distress, while he was also facing the final interview for a potentially life-changing job. Walking away might have felt like sacrificing an opportunity he had worked toward, so he tried to push through the discomfort.

When his body eventually won that argument, the humiliation must have been intense. Yet something important happened on the other side of that panic: the interview itself had apparently gone exceptionally well, and the COO still concluded that he was the right person for the position.

There is a surprisingly useful psychological perspective here. People often imagine embarrassing events from an audience’s viewpoint and dramatically overestimate how much attention other people are paying to them. In the OP’s case, the interviewer probably had no idea what was occurring outside the camera frame.

While the OP was experiencing an unforgettable personal disaster, the COO was evaluating his experience, answers, personality, and suitability for the role.

The physical side of the story also makes sense. Gastroenterologist Dr. Christine Lee of Cleveland Clinic explains that the gut and brain are closely connected. During nervousness, anxiety, or stress, chemical signals can stimulate the intestinal tract, increasing movement and contractions and sometimes contributing to urgent bowel movements or diarrhea.

That does not establish what caused the OP’s stomach problem, food, illness, stress, or something else could have been involved but it demonstrates why high-pressure situations and digestive distress can become an especially miserable combination.

That insight makes the OP’s determination slightly easier to understand. His body was demanding immediate attention while his mind was focused on one enormous professional opportunity.

Under those competing pressures, he made the imperfect decision to continue, somehow remained functional enough to impress an executive, and received an offer worth three times his previous salary.

Perhaps the freshest lesson is that dignity is more durable than people think. He ruined a chair, not his career. The incident probably felt like the worst interview imaginable, yet professionally it became his best one.

Some embarrassing memories eventually stop feeling like evidence of failure and become evidence that life can go spectacularly wrong for ten minutes without the future going wrong with it.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters joked about the relief of realizing the embarrassing incident happened during a virtual interview

Angel_Tsio − You muted when it came out right

JEER11 − Thank God you were at home, this whole time I thought you were at the office or something.

ntrvrtdcflvr − I was relieved when I realized it was a virtual interview. Still s__tty, but it could’ve been worse, like an in-person interview 😩 anyway, CONGRATS! !!

pushypuppet − I didn’t read the bit about it being a call and thought he did it in person lol.

These Redditors expressed sympathy and noted that an in-person incident would have been far more humiliating

restingbitchface8 − At least it wasn't in person. You can buy 3 new chairs now!

peterman86 − Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry that you have gone through this, but I'm glad it wasn't in person.

Could you imagine the shame? Plus, they would have your info. Congratulations on the new job.

I pray that you have nothing but success and that you never experience a digestive issue like this again. Happens to the best of us.

I went through a similar experience stuck in traffic trying to get to my office. I almost made it.

Just 2 blocks away I had to pull over in the parking lot of a bank and you know the rest.

The embarrassment of having to drive home and running out of the car is nothing I wish on anyone.

It's hilarious now, but not back then.

These users joked about the unexpected consequences and ability to perform under pressure

HughJefincock − This is perfect now he’s gonna expect you to s__t yourself all the time.

[Reddit User] − Works well under pressure

hgghgfhvf − COO on the golf course with his executive buddies And I’m telling you Wayne, this guy was qualified.

But I didn’t think the motivation was there. Within 10 minutes I could see he was uncomfortable and about to s__t his pants.

So I persisted and kept asking questions.

I wanted to see if he would actually sit there and s__t his pants instead of asking to end early and potentially think I wouldn’t hire him over that.

And I’ll be damned, that son of a b__ch just sat there across from me as he made eye contact while he soiled his suit pants.

I could tell it was a nice suit too.

The relief hit his face quick before the embarrassment set in.

I saw all I needed to see and dismissed him before my office stank up too much.

Anyone willing to s__t their pants during an interview is a winner in my book and I offered him 3x his former salary on the spot.

I did have my secretary throw away the chair though.

This commenter humorously compared the story to a courtroom incident involving Donald Trump

reverendsteveii − Mr Trump that was a courtroom, not an interview. The "COO" was a judge, and the position was contempt of court.

The s__t, however, was very real.

Would taking a five-minute emergency break have been smarter, or does powering through make this the ultimate “works well under pressure” story? Share the hot takes below.
