Pregnant Tenant Demands A Baby Shower Move, But Her Lease Says Monday Through Thursday

Running a small business in a close-knit community often means trying to help people whenever possible. But even the most generous business owners eventually have to draw a line when one person’s request comes at someone else’s expense.

A woman who owns an event venue has spent years keeping rent low for a local dance studio, even giving the tenant extra flexibility during pregnancy and maternity leave. Everything seemed to be working well until the tenant asked for something she simply could not guarantee.

When an already booked weekend conflicted with the studio’s plans, the request quickly became far more personal than a scheduling issue. Now, the owner is wondering whether refusing to rearrange someone else’s celebration makes her unreasonable. Scroll down to see why Reddit had plenty to say about this dispute.

A landlord refuses to reschedule a baby shower after a tenant demands it for her event

'AITAH for telling my tenant I won’t move a baby shower just to accommodate her?'

I (34F) own a commercial property with office spaces and an event venue.

For the past 5 years I have rented out the space to a dance studio during the week and on occasional weekends if we don’t have an event.

I have not raised her rent at all during this time and in general charge tenants and anyone booking the venue just enough to cover expenses.

It’s a small town with little money so I want to provide an affordable place for small businesses and others to use.

Last week she messaged me asking if she could hold a dance intensive during a weekend and it happens to be a weekend I have booked already.

Normally this is ok, but today I got a three paragraph message explaining

how she tries not to use the venue on the weekends and how because she is pregnant this baby shower needs moved so she can host her event.

I am at a loss for words because she rents year round and already I have given her grace with summer rent

as she wasn’t doing many classes due to pregnancy and then I’m not making her pay rent while on maternity leave.

AITAH if I tell her no I can’t reschedule a baby shower just to accommodate her and her schedule.

(Her contract has her Monday-Thursday for year round rental)

Generosity can become surprisingly complicated when repeated kindness begins to feel like an expectation instead of a gift.

Many people are happy to help others through difficult seasons, but problems often arise when one person’s accommodation starts requiring someone else to sacrifice something they already promised to another party.

In this situation, the OP was not choosing between supporting a pregnant tenant and ignoring her needs. She was deciding whether her responsibility to an existing client should be overturned because another tenant wanted an exception.

The emotional tension comes from differing expectations about flexibility. The tenant is likely facing real challenges related to pregnancy, maternity leave, and planning her business around changing circumstances. From her perspective, asking for a weekend may have felt reasonable because the OP has been understanding in the past.

However, the OP sees the request through the lens of fairness. She has already frozen the tenant’s rent for years, reduced summer payments, waived rent during maternity leave, and allowed occasional weekend use outside the lease.

Receiving a message suggesting that another family’s baby shower should be moved may therefore feel less like a request and more like an assumption that previous generosity guarantees future accommodation.

A different perspective is that repeated acts of kindness can unintentionally shift people’s expectations. In psychology, this is sometimes called “normalization,” where exceptional treatment gradually becomes viewed as the standard.

The tenant may not consciously believe she is entitled to priority over another booking. Instead, she may have become accustomed to the OP finding solutions whenever problems arise.

That makes the disappointment understandable, but it does not make the expectation fair. A contract defines the baseline relationship, while favors remain voluntary rather than guaranteed.

Psychologist Nedra Glover Tawwab has written extensively about healthy boundaries, explaining that clear limits protect relationships by preventing resentment from building over time.

She emphasizes that boundaries are not acts of selfishness or rejection; they clarify what a person can realistically offer while respecting the needs of everyone involved.

When people consistently override their own limits to avoid disappointing others, frustration often replaces generosity.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s hesitation is reasonable. Saying no to this request does not erase the considerable support she has already provided. In fact, maintaining the existing booking also protects the trust of the family who reserved the venue first.

Canceling their event would simply transfer the inconvenience from one innocent party to another. Fairness is not achieved by rewarding the person with the greatest need if it requires breaking a commitment already made to someone else.

Ultimately, compassion works best when paired with consistency. The OP can continue supporting her tenant within the generous terms she has already established while honoring the agreement made with the baby shower organizers.

Sometimes the kindest decision is not the one that pleases everyone, but the one that respects commitments, treats people equally, and ensures generosity remains a choice rather than an obligation.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors said the paid booking should stand under a first-come policy

Hot-Freedom-5886 − “You are not contracted for weekends.

The space has been reserved for some time (weeks, months) and I will not cancel a paying customer. ” NTA

marspigsmoke − NTA. "The venue is already booked on the date you have requested. "

Sunset-onthe-Horizon − NTA First come, first served the space is already booked. Better luck next time.

These commenters recommended a firm written reply citing the contract and booking rules

Future-Nebula74656 − Dear tenant, Your contract states Mon - Thur. ..

Any days outside of that need PRE-APPROVAL.

As you are aware I do rent out the space on the weekends as well This even was paid for months in advance.

You need to ask before planning your dance intensives on the weekends. And just because you are pregnant doesn't make a difference.

As you are now trying to weaponise your pregnancy and trying to make me feel sorry for you. .

The venue is open on these following following weekends. . ( list dates) we can discuss renting for the weekend or any of these dates

Going forward you will need to use the proper booking channels for weekends events

Medical_Gate_5721 − "No. " And if you get pushback. "I will honour our rent-free summer agreement.

However, given that circumstances in our relationship have changed, do not expect me to extend my generosity to you again.

Rent is due September 1. If you are unhappy, I suggest you move. "

These users mocked the tenant’s entitled request to displace another pregnant customer

neutralperson6 − It’s ironic that a pregnant woman is asking for a *baby shower*

to be rescheduled because *she* is pregnant. News flash: the person who the shower is for is also pregnant!

Careful-Self-457 − NTA- how entitled of her to even ask you to do that.

Joyfan237 − Sucks to be her…NTA

These Redditors praised OP’s generosity and felt the tenant was asking far too much

roseifyoudidntknow − The fact that your not making her pay during mat leave is insane and so lovely of you. NTA

Annual_Government_80 − Maybe it’s because it’s a small town maybe it’s because she’s pregnant.

But she is asking a heck of a lot more than she is paying for.

You have been incredibly generous towards her and for her to ask you to move an event already scheduled is ridiculous.

Should the landlord offer another weekend, or has the tenant already pushed her generosity too far? Share your verdict below.
