Renting a Cottage for a Memorial Turned Into a Hostile Takeover by Her Mother

Family get-togethers are usually meant to be about shared laughter, tears, and creating meaningful memories. But when you add a grief-stricken parent, complex sibling dynamics, and strict rental contracts into the mix, it is a recipe for a real-life soap opera. One woman recently learned the hard way that when people are grieving, their ideas of “proper behavior” can become remarkably flexible, much to the frustration of everyone around them.

What began as a plan to honor her late father in the peaceful place he loved turned into a major boundary battle. It is a cautionary tale about why being the responsible one in the family can feel incredibly lonely. Sometimes, sticking to your principles means weathering a lot of guilt and pushback, but it also shows the importance of keeping your family safe, even when your own parent is acting against your best interests.

The Story

Renting a Cottage for a Memorial Turned Into a Hostile Takeover by Her Mother
Not the actual photo

AITAH for setting boundaries with my mom after she invited 30 people to our AirBnB?

Last year my parents rented a cottage on the lake we grew up. My family and I (2 adults/3 kids) went to visit for the day

and had such a great time we all decided to rent a bigger cottage in my name…this is important) for all of us for a week

the following year. Unfortunately in December my dad passed away. We was a simple man…never wanted a service, just cremated and spread his ashes at

the lake. Talked it over with mom and we decided to do family only (with grandkids there’d be 15 of us( for 1 day at

the lake to remember dad. This included hair my sister who I barely talk to and has never met my kids staying for 2 nights.

Not ideal, but it’s family. Well next week is the rental and mom starts talking about salads and appetizers and deli platters. For 15 people?

Negative Ghost Rider….turns out she has invited an additional 20 people for this get together. To a house I rented and signed for, when the

agreement specifically says no events or parties. One of those people is my sisters boyfriend, who my mom informed me is staying with us. I’ve

never met this man and I’ve got 3 kids (13f/11f/8m) sleeping in this house. I lost it. Said no. Told her i would be happy

to rent a hall and have it there but not at the house. She insisted it wouldn’t be a problem and if someone made a

fuss and told the owners she would talk to them and it would be fine. Told her no…I would transfer the rental to her name

and she could do what she wants and I’ll take my family somewhere else. So AITAH for not letting my mom throw a huge party

at a rental house and not letting my estranged sister and her boyfriend stay with us? EDIT: I spoke to the owner of the house

ahead of time and discussed the situation. She agreed to a max of 16 people and no one could spend the night. I made my

mom cancel almost everyone to cut it down. My family arrived Friday. My mom and sister showed up Sunday morning. She and my sister made

the day absolutely terrible. Then I was blamed for being the problem. My mom decided to leave after 2 days. So it was just my

family and I at the house. We never spread dad’s ashes where HE wanted to be…mom said she was taking him home to N.C. along

with his truck that she gave me on Father’s Day. The. Told me she was selling the truck. I let absolutely NONE of this affect

my week with my kids. Nor did they know any of this happened. But I definitely need some time and space to process it all.

I’ll be sending the therapy bill to mom. 🤣

Oh, friend, I truly feel for you here. Dealing with the loss of a parent is heavy enough without your mother trying to steamroll you. When you’re in the thick of it, you want things to be perfect, but it sounds like you were facing an impossible situation. I’m proud of you for holding your ground.

Inviting dozens of people to a house you legally signed for, in defiance of rules that could leave you with massive fines or a permanent ban, is such an unfair ask. You did the absolute right thing by refusing to be forced into that stress. And the fact that she behaved that way during such a sensitive week is just plain exhausting. Please know it’s okay to take all the space you need to recover from that trip.

Expert Opinion

Navigating grief while trying to uphold boundaries is incredibly challenging. Psychologists explain that people often project their pain outward when they are mourning. In this case, it appears the mother was trying to use a large gathering to distract from the reality of losing her husband. This is a common defense mechanism, but it does not justify bypassing personal boundaries.

VeryWellMind suggests that even during mourning, family roles and healthy limitations must remain clear. When a family member experiences trauma, like the loss of a spouse, they may feel entitled to comfort, sometimes at the expense of others. However, turning a rental cottage into an event venue without consent is a significant violation of trust and creates financial risk.

Legal experts note that vacation rentals are bound by strict contractual obligations. Inviting guests beyond the occupancy limit is often treated as a breach of contract, allowing owners to terminate a stay immediately without a refund. You were protecting your own legal and financial safety by being firm.

Dr. Sheri Meyers often reminds us that setting boundaries is not an act of hostility; it is an act of self-care. Even when you are met with blame or told you are the problem, staying steady with your boundaries allows you to remain the safest person for your own children. Choosing to move forward and seek support, like therapy, is a wonderful step toward reclaiming your own peace after such a jarring experience.

Community Opinions

Users were completely on the same page regarding the absurdity of the situation.

AtlantaDave998 − NTA. Your mom was totally inappropriate to invite so many people, especially without asking you first.

Doubly so because your rental agreement forbids it.

peakpenguins − NTA. I've rented places in my name for trips with family and/or friends in the past,

and even though I'm the one who rented it I still ask everyone before I invite anyone else. Inviting 20 extra people is f__king nuts.

Accidental_Sage − ABSOLUTELY NOT. You rented the house, your name is on the agreement,

and you're the one who could get fined, kicked out, or banned from future rentals if it goes sideways.

Everyone emphasized that following the property owner’s rules is non-negotiable.

LakeGlen4287 − It is not fair to the owner, to the Town that licensed the rental, or to the neighbors who live there...

There are airBnB rules for lots of good reasons and she doesn't get to decide she can break them just because she wants to.

Loud_Ad_6871 − Airbnb owner here. I have a (disclosed and clearly viewable) camera at the entrance to my home to prevent parties.

If 30 people rolled up to my house my property manager would be there ASAP kicking you out.

Living_Debate599 − Violating the policy on the agreement opens you up to all kinds of fines and fees that would impact you financially.

Readers felt she should have been even more drastic to save her own peace of mind.

Poesoe − there's no way to stop her freight train without canceling the whole thing... don't change the booking . .. cancel it. NTA

BonusMomSays − Cancel the airBnB altogether and explain to them that it is because, unbeknownst to you, your toxic mother decided to host a party at YOUR rental...

Send text to everyone that the "event is canceled bc your mother decided to host a party... Not open for discussion or debate."

T00narmy1 − HELL no. Cancel that reservation IMMEDIATELY and let her know if she wants it she'll have to rebook.

You don't transfer anything. You don't connect yourself in ANY way.

Most agreed her mother’s behavior showed a complete lack of regard for others.

BraveWarrior-55 − You know it is your mom who is the raging entitled AH, not you...

SHE might be a bit unhinged at losing her husband but she can still understand NO.

Suchafatfatcat − NTA. Your mother sounds like she is used to gliding through life with no regard for anyone else.

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

When someone you love tries to push through your boundaries, especially during a fragile time like mourning, it can be very hard to remain calm. Always prioritize your legal and financial security first. You have no obligation to be “flexible” if it puts your kids, your finances, or your reputation at risk.

If this happens again, state your boundary clearly, offer an alternative if you wish, and then be ready to withdraw from the situation if they won’t comply. Protecting your children’s experience from family turmoil is your priority. It is always better to cancel an event and save your sanity than to stay in a situation that is spiraling out of your control.

Conclusion

This was an incredibly tough week that nobody should have to go through. You navigated a truly chaotic situation while shielding your children from the worst of the fallout, and that shows a lot of strength. I hope you can take the space you need now to grieve for your father on your own terms.

What would you have done if you were in her shoes? Did the right approach get taken here, or should the reservation have been canceled the second she mentioned those extra 20 guests?
