Restaurant Leaves Egg Off the Menu, Then Charges Customer Twice for Asking Them to Fix It

Restaurant mistakes happen, and I think most people are willing to be patient when staff simply fix the problem and move on. The frustration starts when the customer is blamed for an ingredient that was never listed in the first place.

One diner ran into exactly that problem at a Thai restaurant after ordering a noodle dish with tofu. The menu clearly listed the ingredients, but the meal arrived stir-fried with egg, something the OP could not eat. Staff agreed to remake it without any fuss, so the situation seemed resolved until the bill arrived with both dishes charged.

When the diner questioned it, the restaurant insisted the egg was standard and that the customer should have known to ask for its removal. Scroll down to see why the OP refused to pay twice and how the argument finally ended.

'Entitled restaurant wants me to pay for their mistake'

This happened a while ago. I went to a Thai restaurant I’d never visited before. All of their dishes had ingredients listed in the menu.

I picked a noodle dish that listed noodles, veggies, sauce, and choice of protein. I chose tofu.

When I got my order, it was immediately apparent that the whole thing had been stir fried with egg in addition to the listed ingredients.

This kinda bummed me out, since I can’t eat eggs. I let the waitstaff know and asked if they could remake it.

They said yes with no fuss. I got my food shortly after and enjoyed my meal… until the bill came.

I had been charged for the noodle dish twice. I asked my waiter why I’d been charged twice since the first one had been made in error.

They told me that it wasn’t an error; that dish comes with eggs, and it was on me to ask for it without.

I showed them the menu that clearly did not list eggs as an ingredient.

They doubled down and told me “that dish always has eggs” like everyone in the world is supposed to know.

I politely but firmly told them to let the manager know I’d be paying a bill that had one noodle dish, or not at all.

They finally caved and I went on my way.

EDIT TO ADD: 1) The dish in question was pad kee mao. 2) Every dish had a list of ingredients. Others listed eggs.

3) When I let them know about the issue, they took the dish and gave no indication that I would have to pay for it. I never even touched the...

Few things are more frustrating than being charged for a mistake someone else made and then being told it was somehow your responsibility to prevent it.

The customer had already experienced the disappointment of receiving food they could not eat. Still, they handled it calmly, explained the issue, accepted the replacement, and continued the meal. The real conflict began only when the restaurant added both dishes to the bill and insisted the customer should have known about an ingredient that was not listed on the menu.

Emotionally, that distinction matters. The diner was not demanding compensation because they disliked the meal or changed their mind. Eggs were something they could not eat, while other dishes apparently listed eggs explicitly among their ingredients.

That creates a reasonable expectation that the ingredient descriptions were meaningful. When staff responded with “that dish always has eggs,” they effectively shifted responsibility from the restaurant’s written information onto a first-time customer who had no reason to possess insider knowledge.

A different perspective is that the staff may not have viewed themselves as dishonest. To employees who serve pad kee mao every day, its usual preparation may feel so obvious that mentioning egg seems unnecessary.

Psychologically, familiarity can make people forget what outsiders do not know. The problem comes when that assumption becomes blame: we knew this, therefore you should have known it too.

Psychologists describe a related pattern as the actor-observer bias. Verywell Mind explains that people often interpret their own actions through circumstances while judging another person’s behavior more personally.

Someone may excuse their own mistake because of situational factors yet assume another person should simply have behaved differently. This attribution gap can fuel conflict because each side sees responsibility from a different starting point.

In this situation, the restaurant could interpret the first plate as the predictable result of a customer failing to request a modification. The diner, however, experienced it as the predictable result of relying on the restaurant’s own menu.

Given that the customer reportedly never touched the original dish and staff agreed to remake it without warning about a second charge, the surprise bill understandably felt less like policy and more like retroactive blame.

The customer’s response also deserves attention. They were firm without turning the disagreement into a shouting match: remove the duplicate charge, or the billing dispute would continue.

Assertiveness can be useful precisely because it protects a legitimate interest without requiring aggression. Psychology Today notes that healthy assertiveness involves protecting one’s rights while avoiding unnecessary escalation.

The most practical lesson for restaurants is simple: menus should clearly identify ingredients that materially change what a customer can eat, and unexpected replacement charges should be disclosed beforehand. For diners, calmly documenting what was listed and asking for a manager is usually more effective than arguing about who “should have known.”

A mistake is often forgivable. Making someone pay for trusting the information they were given is much harder to swallow.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These users said allergens should be clearly disclosed rather than left for diners to assume

Unhappy-Cake-6089 − Eggs are a common allergen and should ALWAYS be disclosed on menus. Not assumed.

Snoo_76684 − Allergy listing requires that every ingredient is listed.   I knew some one allergic to all proteins.

pegling − Every time I've ordered food in any restaurant in the UK the first thing they ask is are there any known allergies.

Seems like an easy thing for restaurants in the US to start doing.

These users praised OP for standing firm instead of accepting the restaurant’s response

Upwrdmblty_496 − Good for you! Glad you stuck to your guns.

PossibilityOrganic12 − As an Asian American, it's often said that we never give refunds.

And I've seen Asian establishments be very resistant towards giving them, in person, on multiple occasions.

I say that to say, I'm not surprised they had the audacity try to pull this over on you.

This user simply wanted to know which dish caused the problem

Deep_Mood_7668 − Which dish was it?

These commenters found it especially odd that eggs were omitted from the dish description

nunyabidnez76 − It also always has noodles and yet they put that in the description but not eggs?

ImmaculateWeiss − Lmao the best part of this is that the dish isn’t even supposed to have eggs in the first place

These Redditors shared stories showing how hidden ingredients can create serious problems for diners

Ok-Wolverine-4660 − Recently I was a server at a restaurant where a lady brought in her young son who had a severe fish allergy.

She did not inform the staff, and ordered him fries.

A lot of places fry their fish and fries in the same oil - so someone with a fish allergy can have a severe reaction if they eat the fries.

This was the case for the boy.

So the boy is basically going anaphylactic and the mom calmly announces that it was on her for not asking, but they had to go to the ER.

We comped their meal - just because the kid was literally dying in front of us and we felt bad. Mom couldn’t have cared less.

I feel bad for that child sometimes.

Ambitious_Clock_8212 − I took my bf to a fancy restaurant. Not really his vibe, but I’m a foodie and wanted a treat.

He has the “soap gene” for cilantro. We double checked the ingredients that his appetizer was cilantro-free. It arrived COVERED in it.

Thankfully the restaurant made him a new one, agreed they need to add the ingredient to the list, and let me keep the old one.

Was refusing the second charge completely reasonable, or should the diner have asked specifically about egg before ordering? And if a restaurant lists ingredients at all, how much should customers be able to trust that list?
