Roommate Kept Stealing Their Food, So They Served Him A Sweet Revenge He Never Forgot

Sometimes, living with roommates can reveal the strangest conflicts.

When people share a home, small frustrations can quickly become major problems, especially when someone repeatedly crosses a boundary that seems obvious to everyone else.

The original poster (OP) was a college student struggling financially alongside his roommates after the 2008 financial crisis.

One roommate, H, had a habit of eating their food without asking.

Even after being confronted, H did not seem to understand why it was upsetting, despite the roommates telling him they were willing to share if he simply asked first.

After repeated incidents involving missing meals and disappearing treats, OP and his roommates decided to teach him a memorable lesson.

Their plan involved a new type of sugar-free candy that had gained a reputation online for causing digestive problems when overconsumed.

What happened next left H furious, but it also finally stopped the food stealing. Scroll down to see how poeple reacted.

College roommates struggling financially set a trap for the friend who kept stealing their food

'The gummy bears are mine?'

It happened more than 15 years ago, I was in college and living in a rented

apartment with 3 other guys from the same school. It was right after the

financial crisis of 2008, not at the worst but at a not-so-lucky part of EU,

money was tight, even for food.

We suspected H, of the roommates eating our food regularly. When

confronted, he did admit it, although he clearly did not understand the

problem with it. We all knew he was the poorest among us, and we all told

him it is okay if he wants some of our food, just ask before, because it’s the

worst when you are coming home from the evening classes exhausted,

looking forward to your homemade meal you brought from grandma at the

weekend only to find out it’s gone and the cheap places are all closed or far

away, so you go to sleep hungry. But H didn’t seem to understand at all.

Worst thing was, the better the food you have, the more the likelihood of it

would go missing. Got a salad? Untouched. Got some chicken wings? A bit

of them went away. Got a cake? All gone.

That’s when we discovered the locally popular gummy bear brand’s new,

sugar free bears hit the market, and also the first reactions on the internet

was that they taste just like the original, or even better, but if you cannot

control yourself and eat a whole bag (100g) or more, you’ll got the runs.

We knew we found the ideal product for our plan. I borrowed my sister’s

car and we went to the big supermarket to the edge of the city where they

sold them in 500g buckets (that’s a pound in freedom units). We also

bought transparent food wrap. Back home we ate a bit off the top of the

bucket (they were delicious), keeping the online reviews in mind so only a

moderate amount and left the rest for H. I even specifically told H do not

touch my gummy bears.

But knowing H we knew it’s a matter of hours before he cannot control

himself, so we put the toilet seat up, wrapped the toilet with the clear

plastic and put the seat back down. We calculated right, in a couple hours

all the gummy bears went missing, and just after my other roommate

found the empty bucket, H stormed in the toilet, and literally s__t his back

and the back of his head.

After that H obviously ranted that we are all AHs and he would move out.

We all said he is more than welcome. At the end he stayed and never

touched our food again, so mission accomplished I guess…

Sometimes people only understand a boundary after experiencing the consequences of ignoring it.

In shared living situations, small disagreements can become much bigger when they involve respect, trust, and the feeling that someone is taking advantage of others.

What appears to be a simple issue of missing food can represent something much deeper: the frustration of feeling unheard.

In this situation, OP and his roommates were not angry because someone was hungry.

They had already shown compassion by offering to share their food and explaining that they only wanted one simple thing: communication.

The real conflict came from H repeatedly taking food without asking, even after being told why it hurt them.

For college students already struggling financially, losing a carefully saved meal was not just inconvenient. It meant going without food after a long day.

The roommates felt ignored, and eventually their frustration turned into a desire to teach H a lesson he would remember.

A different perspective is that H’s behavior may have come from more than simple selfishness.

People who experience financial insecurity sometimes develop survival habits where immediate needs override social expectations.

He may have viewed the shared food as something available rather than understanding the emotional value attached to it.

However, financial hardship can explain behavior, but it does not excuse repeatedly ignoring other people’s boundaries.

This idea explains why OP and his roommates eventually chose an unusual solution.

They had already tried empathy, conversation, and compromise.

From their perspective, the gummy bear prank was not the first response; it was the final response after feeling powerless.

The fact that H stopped taking their food afterward suggests that the message was understood, even if the method was extreme.

Still, there is a difference between establishing a boundary and humiliating someone.

The prank worked, but it also created unnecessary embarrassment and could have damaged the relationship further.

A healthier approach would have been changing access to food, separating groceries, or creating clearer household rules.

At the same time, it is easy to understand why a group of exhausted students reached a breaking point after feeling repeatedly disrespected.

The story highlights an important lesson about shared spaces: generosity only works when it is respected.

Helping someone does not mean allowing them to ignore your needs.

Compassion and boundaries are not opposites.

The strongest relationships often come from knowing when to offer support and when to insist that others take responsibility for their own choices.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters agreed H ignored warnings and faced the natural consequences of his actions

ComfortableGap4964 − H was warned... truly a FAFO situation.

CoderJoe1 − Roommate thieves are unbearable

Mental-Pudding9635 − H went from “food is communal” to “bowel

movements are communal” in one afternoon. Natural consequences hit

harder than any lecture.

These commenters recognized the famous sugar-free gummy bear laxative effect and shared related experiences

DesignerConfidence15 − Ah, I know the gummy bears well. Albanese or

something like that is the brand here in the states. We were having all staff

training for a full day, like 400 employees for 8 hours. I bought like twenty

pounds or so of them and made sure there were containers at each table

filled with them. It was absolute chaos.

We used to do the training and all day conferences in that hotel every year,

but they never let us back after that.

Large-Carrot-6280 − IIRC, there was once (and maybe still is) an epic review

of Haribo sugar-free gummy bears on Amazon that referred to this loose

bowel phenomenon. It was prolific and hilarious.

Songbirdmelody − I knew where this was headed as soon as I saw Gummy

Bears in the title.

These commenters praised the revenge as creative, tactical, and humorously extreme

SpecialistGarage8959 − Using sugar-free gummy bears as a bio-weapon is

already a 10/10 play, but combining it with the clear plastic wrap on the

toilet seat? ! That’s not just petty revenge, that’s tactical warfare. 💀

Absolute evil, I love it.

BingXtraSmart − Ryan Gosling would call that a fecal Jackson Pollock🤣🤣

These commenters shared personal stories about unexpected digestive disasters caused by food-related pranks or mistakes

crash866 − I bought a 5kg bag and left it at work on a Friday. It was gone on

Monday and when I got to work the washrooms were a mess and the

plumber was just arriving.

Itavan − We had a VP who would help himself to his secretary's food when

she was eating lunch at her desk. She was mad but it was her boss so didn't

make a big fuss. Someone made ExLax brownies and everyone knew not to

take any. He saw them on her desk and said "They're probably not very

good. " Then came back for 2 more.

And 2 more. What made it so funny was that he had an evening meeting an

hour away. He spent the meeting on the toilet. He managed not to s__t

himself on the way home, but it was a close thing. And yeah, I now know

that's illegal. This happened in 1980s.

heckinstoned − Can confirm. Ate 2 bags of them and it was like a fire hose

coming out of my b__t. Like comically loud, explosive.

The roommates tried to solve a frustrating problem after repeated warnings failed, turning a food thief’s weakness into a lesson he would never forget.

While many people understood the anger behind the prank, some felt the punishment crossed a line, especially knowing H was struggling financially.

Others argued that boundaries had already been explained, and the prank worked because it finally made him respect them.

Was the gummy bear trap justified, or did the roommates take revenge too far?
