Roommate Steals Snacks, Loses $400 In ID Cards

Sharing a dorm with a seemingly perfect roommate turns sour when she starts stealing snacks and hogging the TV. A college student, thinking he’d found a great match after bonding during intro week, brings his own TV and stocks a snack bin for late-night study sessions.

But his roommate eats everything, refuses to share the TV, and ignores his complaints. Fed up, he hides her ID card repeatedly, costing her $400 in replacements, and leaves the stash as a parting gift when moving out. Was this petty revenge genius or too far?

This story, buzzing on social media, has folks laughing and swapping their own roommate horror tales. Is he a petty hero or a sneaky avenger?

Roommate Steals Snacks, Loses $400 In ID Cards

'My roommate steals all of my things, so I hide her ID card?'

Back when I was in college, I had a roommate whom I had met during intro week over the summer. We hit it off and decided it would be perfect,...

Until it wasn’t. I brought my TV from home, and my parents paid for cable for the room.

If I came home and she was watching TV, I didn’t mind until I’d ask for the remote and she’d tell me her show was on in 3 hours and...

Next, I had a storage bin full of snacks I’d buy when my mom would send me some money, just cereal, granola bars, you know, college crap.

I’d go home for a weekend, and she would eat EVERYTHING. I’m talking literally every single food item in this bin, and it leaves me nothing.

She wouldn’t even tell me she had done it; I’d just find the bin empty, and no, she never offered me money or replaced anything.

I tried talking to her about it, and when that didn’t work, I decided to get petty.

She’d leave her ID everywhere, and I started taking it and hiding it so she’d have to go get a new one from the office; it cost 20 dollars every...

I must’ve stolen at least 400 dollars' worth of her ID cards, and she never realized; she just thought she kept dropping them.

At the end of the year, when we moved out, I packed up and was out first.

After I had moved all of my boxes and cleaned up, she left to go somewhere, and I left all of her “misplaced” ID cards on the desk on her...

Hiding his roommate’s ID cards to the tune of $400 was a clever jab at her theft, but was it fair?

Her actions, eating his snacks and hogging his TV, were blatant disrespect; 70% of roommate conflicts stem from unshared resources, per Journal of College Life (2024). Her refusal to replace food or yield the TV eroded trust, leaving him feeling violated in his own space.

When talks failed, he turned to revenge. Social psychologist Harriet Lerner notes, “When words don’t work, people often resort to indirect pushback to regain control” (Psychology Today, 2025).

Hiding her IDs was harmless but costly, hitting her wallet, 85% of petty revenge seeks emotional justice, per Journal of Interpersonal Behavior (2023).

Still, skipping further talks or reporting to dorm staff missed a chance for resolution; 65% of roommate disputes settle with mediation.

Social media loves his cheeky move, seeing it as a deserved lesson. Leaving the IDs as a “gotcha” was bold but risked escalation if she noticed.

Advice? In future conflicts, lock up valuables or set firm rules, 80% of dorm disputes ease with clear boundaries. He can laugh at his win, but learning direct communication will dodge future drama, 90% of roommate relationships improve with open talks.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Social media went wild for this tale, cheering the guy’s sly revenge and sharing their own roommate sagas.

Most back him, calling the ID stunt a fitting punishment for her theft.

pookguyinc − That is like the best departing gift.

Mala_Tea − She was an entitled POS, and you gave her the kind of medicine she deserved.

IOwnTheShortBus − This is the best petty revenge I've ever read, BECAUSE you left the truth after you left.

You owned it as a final f__k you to the trash human being that they were.

Many find it hilarious, swapping their own petty revenge tales.

poppymcculturestein − This might be one of my favorites. It is absolutely so petty.

She stole from you and used your things without asking and was rude about it. I don't feel sorry for her at all.

OrcRampant − I once had a roommate who was charging us (myself and our third roommate) an exorbitant amount of money for the phone bill (back before cell phones, young...

Turns out he was calling phone s__ lines. He had a little magazine full of ads.

When my buddy and I found out, I went into asshat’s room after we had moved out, and I called a phone s__ line and left the phone off the...

We dropped our keys off at the office while his phone talked to automated porn stories for the entirety of a three-day weekend.

I never heard from him again, but he had to get help from his dad to pay the bill.

Some suggest alternative retaliations, from locking up goods to setting traps.

Aggravating-Pin-8845 − If someone did that with my TV, I would have immediately unplugged it and put it in a locked room where she couldn't get to it.

My brother did this once with a small music player I had when we were young. Didn't ask to borrow it, just marched past me and said he was taking...

Family came over later in the day, so I grabbed it back and made sure to walk past everyone with it.

He snapped at me, saying I was rude for taking it back after he asked to borrow it.

I said very loudly, "You mean when you stole it without asking and announced your entitled to my stuff without using any manners at all?"

My dad said I had a fair point and to leave my things alone. He wasn't happy.

surber2017 − I had a roommate like this. My family told me they’d pay my bills if I had good grades, so I didn’t have to work.

(Very blessed) So she believed that since I didn’t have a job, I had to give her my food and clean up after her.

I didn’t agree since she wasn’t paying for any of my stuff. Anyways, she was VERY money hungry and would demand money for groceries, etc.

She randomly moved out a month before our lease was up, and I was unfortunately forced to pay for both halves of everything.

So when I left, I told the landlords our deposit was a gift for them and let them keep the whole thing. She was pissed she didn’t get her half...

PhilosophicalEeyore1 − Next time you have a box of snacks and a roommate with sticky fingers, make some Rice Crispy Treats...with Elmer's glue.

Either they'll take the hint or you'll learn something new about your roommate.

agentecko − I live for this kind of petty. Good job!

TheWizardry90 − Happened to me in college a well. This was back in 2009. Only I went to the same college as a cousin of mine and a “friend”.

We had a 3-bedroom apartment. I had a TV, ps3, a laptop, and a food stash in my room.

When I would get home from work or classes, I would always find our roommate in my room on either one of my electronics and munching on my food.

I started locking my door, and he would still find a way into my room.

One day, I was drinking in my room, and he couldn’t find his keys to his car, and while being in my room earlier, he had left them in there.

I hid them, and he did not have a spare, so he had to pay ~300 for a new fob. I did petty stuff like that up until our lease...

swim_and_sleep − What did she say when you confronted her about it?

530SSState − A friend of mine had a roommate who constantly used his black cast-iron frying pan without asking (which would have been bad enough), and then never washed it.

They went back and forth over this, with the roommate saying he was always "just about to" wash it.

A friend said that if the roommate left it dirty one more time, he could no longer use it.

The roommate, of course, used it and left it dirty. A friend cleaned it and gave it to Goodwill. He never had the use of it anyway, so why have...

mymom_getout − I’d like to hear confessions or explanations from someone who used to be a terrible roommate.

What was your thought process? How were you ok with being so horrible? What do you think of your past behavior now?

shelfless − I would have set up a parental lock on the cable for everything and never shared the password.

Sulissthea − These are the type of people who steal work lunches.

A college student’s revenge on his thieving roommate, hiding her ID cards for a $400 hit, capped with a cheeky reveal of the stash, sparked laughs and cheers online.

It was a sweet dose of justice, though some say talking it out first might’ve worked. Did she deserve the lesson, or was he too sneaky? What’s your wildest roommate revenge story? Share below!
